      @@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I'm new to this and i don't understand why ppl are saying they're shit. I didn't buy any cuz of that but what's the reason ppl are saying that?
      Also, i learn really quick and know how to use an airbrush cuz i used to paint custom xbox controllers. Are these paints needed or better or will i be fine using the basic layers, shaders, and metallics?

    • @JuanHidalgoMiniatures
      @JuanHidalgoMiniatures  4 роки тому

      @@Disiplyn well look at the people saying those things, I can warranty you none of them are high level painters. A lot of those have loved them and incorporated them to their tool set. They are basically like Inks, but thicker, dry slower and are more controllable. I call them super-inks.
      They are a great tools for the newcomers because they have the potential to produce decent looking models with one layer, and I guess some painters feel threatened by that kind of tool, because it puts someone that is new to their same level.
      For me the only problem with them is how they are marketed, GW sell them as a "system", get contrast and that's it, also hate how they separate both ranges in their tutorials, that is ridiculous. They are an amazing complement to your painting but that's what they are a complement, another tool to use not singular system.
      Do you need them? No, but the same can be said for most things. For example I actually know how to make almost any colour in existence using 5 paints (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black and White) but I don't because I don't hate myself. I like convenience.
      As for my personal recommendation, well they are AMAZING, inks are amongst the most useful tools the highest level painters use and these are inks but better in a lot of ways. I would definitely recommend getting some of them, Apothecary white, Iyanden Yellow, Black Templar, Flesh Tearers Red, Wyldwood come to mind easily but in the end it's your decision as it is your money.
      What I do recommend you is don't listen to other people, make your own decisions based of testing and trying what works for you. Experiment, step out of your comfort zone and PAINT BRAVELY

      No secrets, it's all there in the video. You have to put the paint where you want it and move it so it behaves.
      Try using a LARGE brush, and make as less brushstrokes as you can. It's better to do a thicker layer and go by small sections. Once it starts to settle go with a clean brush and absorb any excess and undesired pooling

      If you have problems with being neat, the best way to do it is do the Black Templar step over the black, the do the rest before Highlighting the armour. If you mess up just paint with Mechanicus and Black Templar over those mistakes. Black Templar is so dark the slight patch won't be seen, Specially after the highlights are done.
      You can alternatively also do the armour last but then you could mess up with black into the other parts as well

    I'm a novice painter, wanting to paint a small force of Sisters now that they're released, and I wonder: Is there any particular reason why you used wraithbone, instead of a neutral white primer? Does it provide more warmth to the colors painted on top than you'd get with white, or is it just that you had wraithbone spray on hand at the time of recording?

    • @JuanHidalgoMiniatures
      @JuanHidalgoMiniatures  4 роки тому +1

      It's indeed because it provides more warmth for the colours yes. You could do it with white as well, the difference would be noticeable but not that big

    • @xxhellspawnedxx
      @xxhellspawnedxx 4 роки тому

      @@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks for the straight-forward answer :)
      While I have your attention, I have another question: I tried to replicate your method on a test model, basically a stark white primer, and then Black Templar over Mechanicus Standard Grey, but the result I got was... Well, it looks more like I had basecoated the areas with Abaddon Black. No contrast whatsoever, or such a weak contrast that it's imperceptible.
      I did two thin coats of the Grey, and the coverage was good, although it looked quite a bit darker than yours did, curiously. Then I used the Contrast paint straight out of the bottle, and got no contrast to speak of.
      I also tried Guilliman Flesh straight out of the bottle, and it gave a much better result.
      So, the question: Do I still need to thin the darker hues to get a proper result, and if so, what ratios would you recommend?

    • @JuanHidalgoMiniatures
      @JuanHidalgoMiniatures  4 роки тому +1

      @@xxhellspawnedxx I use the paints straight out of the pot unless stated but I will agree that Black Templar over Mechanicus is very subtle, it does give a bit of shading but it requires Highlights. I do it because I want an almost black Basecoat for my armour so it looks properly Black. I will be honest with you and say that for my day to day I just paint them black and do an extra Highlight of Dark Reaper instead.
      If you want to stay with Contrast, you can Basecoat the armour with Dawnstone instead of Mechanicus. Even moving into Administratum if that feels dark.
      Other alternative is to paint the armour Mechanicus, and then Highlight it with Dawnstone or Administratum (layering or drybrush) and then do the Black Templar over that, that way the highlights created by the contrast paint will be more intense

    So first off, really good video and technique. I want to say that right off the top because I think what this video shows best is that there are no real shortcuts for Contrast paint. Honestly, its a really expensive paint to use for a particular effect and consistency. The Sister miniature was a good choice too for showing both Juan's skill and that Contrast is not a time saver, not as far as I can see, and not if you want your miniatures to look decent. Thanks for this video, probably shows it the best.

    • @JuanHidalgoMiniatures
      @JuanHidalgoMiniatures  4 роки тому +2

      Well, I do agree with you in part. There are no shortcuts, magic paints don't exist.
      That being said I do think contrast paints are AMAZING, they are super inks and I highly recommend them, specially for high end painters. The problem is GW advertising them as the new way of painting. That is BS, and honestly you do save quite some time in the basecoating and shading process

      I use a size 3 Rosemary and Co which is significantly larger.
      It's very normal that the tip dries faster as that's the thinnest part. What forms on the tip is not dust but dried paint, that slowly forms a very small ball, just pull it out with your fingers.
