Farage: Irish immigration 'may need a rethink' - Murnaghan

- UKIP Leader Nigel Farage tells Dermot Murnaghan that the free movement of Irish citizens to the UK may 'need a rethink' if Britain leaves the EU. Likewise with Scotland if it become independent.
More than 200,000 Brits are resident here in Ireland, it's a two-way street
James Walsh- I agree! I do wonder though, how many of them are just bog-standard Brits and how many are 2nd generation Irish like me or have recent Irish heritage? Also the Irish Diaspora in Britain is about 10 million strong now apparently,or so I've heard! I do think that if they tried to make Irish people have passports etc.,it would cause more problems than it would solve and I doubt it'll ever happen!
and they are very welcome
indeed no problem with that at all. i should imagine there's way more irish here.fine by me
I don't mind if there's Irish in our country as long as they're not the IRA
@@olivernorton6571 are we?
Try coming to Ireland telling us we were a part of the UK.
There would be uproar
Farage should just try coming to Ireland lol. He needn’t even open his mouth and there’d be uproar. Same fool has had an Irish wife and currently has a German wife… it’s like he just hates his relationships and takes his anger out on whatever country his spouse was born in 🤣
@@willslingwood Farage has already been to Ireland. 🙄
He didn’t say Ireland is a part of the UK. Are your being purposefully stupid? He said Ireland WAS a part of the UK.
Jasus, he didn’t say we are part of the uk he said we were, before independence which he’s right
Irish have always been welcome in the UK and rightly So that will never change.
+rectorman1 As the british are here
rectorman1 We'd also could need visas to travel to the UK like other Europeans might!
Stephen Murphy The UK is never going to introduce visas and residence permits for Irish people. A tenth of the people have at least one Irish grandparent and two million residents of Great Britain are entitled to Irish citizenship. It would be an act of madness if the Irish ended up being treated like people from other European countries. They never have been and never will.
rectorman1- Thank you.I have to say,my parents and I never experienced serious racism in Britain.Once people got to know my parents, they liked and respected them.2nd generation Irish like me never really experience racism in Britain and thse days,in my experience, English people REALLY like the Irish. My Irish husband was warmly welcomed by all my friends when we visited. I hope and pray for the day when we can be fully independant nations but very good friends and neighbours! God bless!

Ireland was a part of the UK from 1801, until the Free State was created (and NI set up the very next day).
India was never made a part of the UK.
Prior to Strongbow, who was a Cambro-Norman with an invitation to bring his armoured cavalry, Ireland was a collection of warring kingdoms.
None of which need affect a future prosperous relationship between Ireland and the UK....
There is a solution to this.
Only people with Irish passports would get access to Britain and only people with British Passports get access to Ireland.
And each government would have a strict agreement in place. So even if Ireland stays in the EU it would not apply to other EU citizens.
Britain could enforce strict agreements with other European countries of their choice.
bighand69 - and exactly where are those passports going to checked who is going to check them?
The real problem is is that our respective governments are now handing out citizenship like candy. That means loads more people coming to our countries.
@@interquad1 don’t ask hard questions it might short circuit their brains

no. Northern Ireland is occupied. The only solution is the colonizers leave
The whole of Ireland had MP's in Westminster until independence. That doesn't apply to other former colonies does it? History is not MSMs strongpoint as it is a verifiable truth.
Prophetic
I agree with Farage. As a southern Irish man, Ireland should reconsider a stronger union with britain and a lesser union with Europe when it comes to immigration policy and other mutual concerns.
+dlougha As an Englishman with southern Irish roots, I also hope that Britain and Ireland can bury the bad blood and work together to build a better future. I also hope that we can forge a closer relationship with Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They are Anglo-Celtic nations and I will always consider them to be our greater family. I'm not sure what is stopping these countries building a military and trading alliance. NATO doesn't suit either the UK or Canada. Under the present conditions, we are subordinate to the United States. Rather than have a return of the British Empire in the traditional sense, we could use the imperial heritage in a purely symbolic way in order to create an alternative powerhouse for the future. At least that way we could save our countries from being involved in all these pointless wars.

going to the U.K. illegally which they then do . If they are subsequently caught working illegally in the U.K.
they will not be deported to their own country as they have residency in the Common Travel Area ie Ireland .

Ireland was a part of the UK -not by choice
Excatly
Ireland was made part of the UK in 1801, and 26 Irish counties left the UK in 1921. Prior to 1801, Ireland had its own parliament in Dublin brought into being shortly after the American Revolution (Grattan's parliament: the building is currently the Bank of Ireland beside TCD). The figure ultimately responsible for us being incorporated into the UK in 1801 was Wolf Tone and the United Irishmen, who were inviting Napoleon into Ireland (just after Napoleon had conquered northern Italy in 1797 and before he went on to invade Egypt. Napoleon decided that invading Egypt was a better prospect than invading Ireland). The English didn't approve and took Ireland into the UK. Ironically, just when England had been loosening its grip on Ireland, the threat of the Irish inviting an invasion from the Spanish Empire having faded. So our 1798 rebellion was largely responsible for putting Ireland into the UK. And furthermore, the 1919-1921 revolution, got our country partitioned. Constitutional politics would have got us our independence intact a lot sooner.

I agree with Nigel here. Emigration is a release valve that has gotten sucessive Irish neo liberal governments off the hook and enabled their grip on power to continue thus denying the Irish people their sovereignty. If Irish people think the republic is worth achieving then a prerequisite is remaining resident here and fighting for it. Erin go Brath and cheers Nigel.
Agreed larry. We need to be careful though because if nigel gets his wish and the UK leave the EU,all the immigrants will flood over into Ireland. I hope nigel though does a good job of cleaning up the UK and restoring her to her former glory...
irish fish then I am in northern ireland and it will be tricky especially when some people live in NI and work in ROI and the other way around
Ian Ian The real facts of the matter are that the republic isn't a fully sovereign country. We are tied to the UK through our legal system which is like the UK an amalgam of common and EU law. Our legal system is run by the BAR Council of Ireland. Also there are intergovernmental agreements making the British Isles a common travel area for citizens of either juristiction. Also the provisions of the GFA ensure equal aknowledgement of UK and ROI passports throughout the British Isles. It has come to my attention in recent days that the queen may have a secret agreement with the EU to force the UK into full integration with the EU. The forthcoming referendum may well have a predetermined result which really isn't beyond the bounds of credibility. There is also the possibility of staged terror within the UK along Christian/Muslim lines in order to mask this plan. Have a look at UK Column channel for leaks on this.
@@larrydelamb Well the UK left the EU. Not totally as we’re still trying to untangle ourselves. But we’re out for the most part. We’re trying to get rid of the NIP now.. and the ECHR.

I love the look on Nigel's face when the interviewer says that "India was once part of the country as well" it was not. It was part of the empire, and then the commonwealth. Ireland itself was part of the country of the UK for hundreds of years.
120 yrs
+PointlessEndeavour Nit picking part of the UK or empire the same thing.
@@stoney7145 - It's definitely not the same thing. Every Irish citizen can move freely to the UK and live, work, vote, become a police officer, etc..and vice versa (almost reciprocal). Indian citizens do not enjoy that status because India was never part of the UK, and India is halfway around the globe, whereas Ireland is next-door. Those rights are valuable.
@@stoney7145 India was never part of the UK. Ireland as long as it’s ever been a country has been under British control until 1946, it was the lordship of Ireland, kingdom of ireland, then the United Kingdom of Great Britain and ireland.

no it wasn't ...it was also part of the commonwealth and or british colonies until 1801 ..the act of union happened as a response to clamp down on rebellions the british could make stricter security laws without interference from irish civil servants or leaders by making an act of union ...and then ireland became independant in 1921 ...so it was a part of the uk for exactly 120 years.

Yeye yup the irish try and get us we have the fkn IRA
Farage said "Ireland was part of this country". What a disgusting liar he is! Yes a liar. Ireland was never part of Britain, it was a colony the same as India. The British imposed the moniker UK to Ireland as part of its efforts to utterly destroy the Irish nation, but it was never a part of the UK in any other sense. Its wealth was transferred to Britain through the harsh landlord system of British landlords owning all the land of Ireland. This colonial system was the same as India where all of its wealth was transferred to Britain frequently creating famines there as they did in Ireland. Ireland was reduced to complete impoverishment and degradation under British colonial rule, which took nearly a century to rise out of. And when people like Farage or other Brits try to imply that the Irish are some kind of Brits, supposedly by mistake or simply just to keep the British public totally misinformed about Ireland as they always do, it is not meant to suggest that the Irish are equal, it is meant in the sense that Britain owns Ireland. Even the far-right fascist elements in Britain, in their ongoing hatred of the Irish, have referred to the IRA as being "British", again meaning to insult the Irish and saying Britain owns Ireland as far as they are concerned. There are still some people in Britain who like to refer to the Irish as being British even though they know well they are not and it is ridiculous to say it. But it is a term of insult to an Irish person to suggest such a thing, and it is often done in the mainstream British media by people who are educated and know better, but it is part of their colonial legacy to suggest they still own a country which fought off their predatory colonialism. So when Farage says Ireland was part of his country it's not just a slight mix-up of words, it is his heartfelt desire as a far-right politician to re-colonise all of Ireland. It was one of the main objectives of his Brexit fiasco.
Spot on mate these racists conveniently decide when to include the irish into their white supremacist in-group as long as it suits their agenda.
