Because it's a marketing trick. No one will want to sell you a true modular phone or anything really if they can get away without the modularity. Less replaceable parts = new phone sooner. They just wanna use the hype and try to sell phones. And in this case - "special" back covers after you buy the phone. If they truely wanted to sell modular phones, they'd let you choose the parts/modules you want when you buy one and charge per peice, like Framework does for laptops. As you can see in the video, that's not the case, so....

I watched a review of a true e-ink phone a while back, it doesn't work. Even when the e-ink panel is good and fast, color is either pathetic or 256 grayscale from 2004. Now, if there was a phone that had OLED on the front and e-ink on the back (or better yet e-ink backcover that you can buy and attach), that would be something. It would kill a lot of kindle sales because of the convenience. And if you flip the phone you can use the e-ink as an always on display, it literally uses 0 power when stationary. Solar panel would also be cool, I'd buy that, too.
This phone won't make it just like the Motorola phone didn't make it. No company wants to make mods for this phone because they're not going to make any money this phone's not going to sell

LG and Motorola failed due to the lacking support, variety, and practicality for their mods. This one... this one is just shit. Not only is it shite. The implementation sucks more than an organic vacuum. It's clunky as hell! Every switch is a chore. The design is cheap and wonky. The purpose is stupid. And the marketing is even dumber. Who the hell wants to buy something like this? Like, seriously, HMD... Just for *'WHO'* exactly is this for? The features, aside from the flash, is just a repacking of things we used to get over half a decade ago. Nothing new about it. Instead of a flash, why not legit add modular lenses? Put one, big, high quality lense on a phone and then make it so that users can equip different different lenses on it for different focal lengths. Make a gimmick where you try to mimic the 'feel' of using an actual camera without its cumbersome aspects. Like the vibration caused by the shutter when you take a photo. The way you hold a camera and where the capture button is located. And the depth of a camera. All of these with just a few attachments. Or the ability to turn your phone into a Mini-PC using a dock and a monitor. Android already has a desktop mode in A15. Why not build on top of it? Or put a high quality audio jack for audiophiles. Or a privacy-focused device that runs on Linux/Sailfish. Or make a really, really, *really* good dinky qwerty phone. Seriously, that would catch the eye of quite a handful of people. A phone that lasts for days on a change. Takes descent pics.. Can use and browse the internet without problems. Feels good to type on. Is small and pocketable. Has a great headphone jack. Niche phone, but is really, really, really good. So many ways to make an actually interesting and desirable device, yet they make this?!
