How did you go about learning this? and learning shrike too? I've been trying to learn songs off of Hozier's new album but the fingerstyle is difficult and you do it so smoothly... what else do you practice on guitar to get this good at fingerstyle? Love the cover btw your voice is so addicting

I learned this song and Shrike from watching Hozier play them. I just keep watching a video until I feel like what I'm playing sounds the same. If you haven't been playing for very long then I'd say use tabs and just keep practicing until you play it smoothly.
I don't really practice fingerstyle but learning a couple of classical pieces helped in the beginning.

Also man, would you say that your thumb is completely independent from your other fingers? I know it’s possible to just memorize when to strike the base note but I know some people just keep a steady rhythm without thinking about it. Is that the case for you?

I think I keep a steady rhythm without thinking about it when playing a song like this one. The rhythm is straight forward and the base notes stay on the same note. I'm more focused on what the other fingers are doing.
