Aloha Jess, girl I live in Hawaii, the cost of FOOD is over the top expensive here, even growing food here is pretty costly. Bread can range from $6.00 to $10 a loaf , veggie per pound for lettuce can start at $2.99 lbs. I appreciate you, and your story. That said, people will talk no matter what you do. Just keep doing what you do. Also you're right 1) Food sold in the store isn't as healthy as home grown. 2) The meats are not grown from cared for animals. 3) You are also supporting your community with the food you share. So let people talk, those who know you KNOW YOU ❤. Just don't STOP believing in why you do what you do. Mahalo for sharing you've inspired me to be a gardener and dream my own dream.

Oh Jess, you’ve earned everything you have. No apologies or explanations are due anyone! You have a beautiful life and you have turned your dream into reality. What an incredible example you are of tenacity, faith, and devotion to your passion. I am trying to bring my own dream to life, building a (beautiful) sanctuary of healing for women who have experienced trauma. Beauty is God’s gift to humanity to help us deal with the ugliness of this world and is a worthy pursuit, especially when you share it others. I’m not there yet but I know the kind of work it takes to build a dream out of nothing…. you deserve to bask in your beautiful life…and never apologize or explain yourself to anyone in order to assuage their envy. ❤

We love you Jess! You have the biggest heart ever. One time my dad (who lives overseas) was visiting in 2019 and he said “oh hunny you remind me of my tomato garden girl i watch online”…. He said “ her name is Jess from roots and refuge. Imagine my shock and great joy. First that somehow the universe brought you into BOTH of our lives. I was just talking to my husband today about gardening being my peace in this chaotic world. You know what I see when I look at your 800 foot beautiful garden? I see someone who loves beautiful things and the beautiful things the land can supply with hard work and dedication. The way you love what you do is inspirational. And this is hard work, I don’t think people realize how hard growing a really large garden can be. And you do this to supply not only your family but your friends and
community with organic and healthy food. I admire you, Jessica Sowards, and all that you do for your family and your community. Your authenticity will always be relatable to me and thousands of others who consider you a friend we met through UA-cam. Love you girlfriend!

@@lyndaevans1132 I agree 100%! I try to save money where I can and the food is nice, but like you, it’s my hobby. I find so much joy and peace out in my garden. It’s truly what helped me through some of the hardest parts of my life- losing my baby sister and going through a divorce… my garden is what kept me sane. And it doesn’t matter how much money someone puts into it… if it helps feed their family and keeps them sane and grounded… it shouldn’t matter to anyone else what is going on in someone else’s yard.

Ok...I never comment twice but as your official reminder of your words Jess, I have to share them from your last garden tour in Arkansas. I think they perfectly express what you addressed here.
"The thing that I've learned the most is that sometimes the very fulfillment of your dream turns out to just be a stepping stone into the next place. For so long I viewed living in town and waiting til I could garden on a large scale as my classroom and I desperately wanted to have this fulfillment and I got it! But I didn't realize til halfway through my time here that I was just in the next classroom. And THAT has made me such a bold dreamer. And bringing you into this garden has taught me the value of community and the value of sharing. This garden and my experience here...there's no way it would have been as amazing without you... you've taught me how to garden in so many ways. And I know fully that I wouldn't be launching into this next place as the woman and the gardener I am if it wasn't for you."
    Nuff said, y'all. Nuff said.

One point to make is that I would recommend that when putting a garden space together you should make it a place where you are going to want to spend a lot of time… so make it a place where you see beauty, find joy, want to sing in and bring that beauty and joy to your plants to your food to your soul. You have built your sanctuary that feeds your soul and your family. It’s a dream and we all need to continue to dream. And everybody’s dreams and sanctuary is going to be and look different. You keep being you, living the dream and making the content that you do❤give people ideas to dream about!

My garden brings me so much more fulfillment than a trip to the grocery store ever could. I love growing weird things and exposing people to them. It's brought me closer to my friends/neighbors and brings them as much joy as it does to me because they know they are free to come grocery shop whenever they want. My 93 year old widowed neighbor actually brings people over to my house to show them my gardens. I'm planning my 2024 garden around sharing it, the end that people can drive up to is going to have all the produce they usually want like a living grocery aisle. Growing in abundance to be able to bless my community is the best way I can spend my money and fills my heart with so much joy.

I thoroughly can relate and understand how awkward it can feel to go from scraping change from your purse to go to the store to get milk to achieving some comfort and stability and nice surroundings through hard work. I understand why you felt compelled to share your thoughts because of the person you are. But you didn’t have to. You dont have to justify yourself. I see you and I’m sure many others do as well. As someone who has been watching you for years, who made a radish bed out of a kiddie pool, who turned their front lawn in to raised garden beds, who had a table on their front lawn with free cauliflower, kale, jalapeno starts for my neighborhood to take - I would never associate the word excess with you. You have created abundance, which is a main point of gardening, and you have shared that with everyone! You share knowledge, passion, your personal life and I'm sure SO MUCH tangible food and flowers to your extended friends, family and community. You inspire people to put their hands in some dirt and make food or beautiful flowers. People underestimate the incredible worth of seeing your dream through. We are building our dream home ourselves. People think I'm crazy because it would be easier and quicker to pay someone else to do it. But the incredible value of seeing your dream happen can't be monetized. I may not be able to do the things you are doing in your garden now, but it sure does feed my dreams. I've been watching your videos for 6 years and have enjoyed seeing your garden and dreams grow. It shows that anyone can do it if they focus and work their dream and see difficulty as something to overcome, not something to bring you to a screeching halt.

Stayed with you ever sense, yes, for the garden content but also for the pure joy you have in your family, life choices, friends, community and garden content … that’s now the bonus. I love watching your dreams play out … mainly because of your gratitude and honesty. The fact that you can afford to live how you live now, thrills me … to watch the epic journey of hard work, community support/sharing, faith and dedication gives me pause in how life should/could be lived. This isn't just a garden!!! This is YOUR happiness!! This is something you have built and grown to be your PLACE.. your family's place. The place you are happy and want to spend your time. It's your REFUGE and I am here for it!! Most of us are 😂. I would love to have what you have, but heck a lot of my friends would love to have what I have. However making what you have work and making it your own is special!! It's something we can take pride in and say... I did this.... I grew that.. I love being at home, I feel peace when I am here, so does my family. My "expensive" dairy cow, well she is more than a cow, she is part of our family and we adore her. People pay way more for their expensive designer dog or horse. 🤷🏼‍♀️ If that makes them happy lol then so what. You keep being yourself we love you for it!! ❤❤

Every business has business expenses. I want a beautiful greenhouse. Fabulous raised beds, nice walk ways. And like you, I will work for them. If you are doing what you love, paying your bills on time and providing for your family all at the same time. Jess. You have nothing to explain about your little luxuries. You earned anything you have. As far as what you do for others….during Covid you taught me how to garden and I will be forever thankful! When I started out I’ve used your trick of growing directly out of a soil bag and up-cycling a kiddie pool. Your ability to teach at an approachable common sense level is your talent and blessing you share. Just like you, I’ve dragged myself up from nothing to something in one lifetime. For me that something is having a home and garden. So just always remember that whatever blessings you have you openly share with the world. It’s your mission. No one else’s! Again thanks for sharing and inspiring so many of us!

I went from a little patch, to a couple of 8x4 raised beds to a couple of extra green stalks to 6 8x4 vego raised beds, 4 green stalks, 3 asparagus beds and 2 low 4x8 raised beds plus flowers! You are so appreciated! Now I can retire happily after 3 years of following you. I can plant seeds and have a happy, healthy, emotionally healthy life. Thank you so very much!

Jess, I learned something about abundance a few weeks ago... Your abundance lies in how to spread it to others. Think of all the jobs that you have created, all the lives you have changed, all the information, grace, and gratitude you have spread. You can't pour from an empty cup. But once your cup was filled, you chose to fill others cups as well. That is an amazing quality in a person, and I am very impressed by your humbling and passionate soul. God put you in this place for a reason. You are relatable because you have experienced both the lack and abundance.

I'm so happy that Jess is living her dreams - I don't begrudge her that at all, and I love seeing what she's up to these days. But I find that I actually learned more about gardening (especially on a budget) from her Arkansas videos. So anytime I want that down-to-earth, totally relatable gardening content, I rewatch those - where the greenhouse was crappy (but a blessing to have), and there were many great and creative makeshift solutions.

Living vicariously through you is one of my favorite things to do! I wanted to tell you. One of my favorite things about you is that you don't just garden to save money. Growing things for their beauty has tremendous value. Maybe growing something or building something beautiful isn't saving money, but it's nourishing your soul. I started adding lots of flowers and pretty things to my garden based on watching your videos and it's brought me so much happiness. I'll probably never grow enough food to feed my family. That's just not our lifestyle and I don't have the space. I grow for some food, but mostly for fun, and for connection to the earth for me and my kids. And watching your videos is one of my favorite hobbies. Keep being your beautiful authentic self!! We love you.

You’ve worked so hard to build your dreams. You’ve earned all that you have. Link some of your first videos of growing lettuce out of a bag of soil, growing peppers in a kiddie pool, etc. that you did because that’s what you had. You’ve grown gardeners from your videos! You’re making the world a better place, so the people trying to shame you for working hard and succeeding in life ought to take a page from the Jess book and make content that inspires others to do good things in their life! Seriously, making videos about your finances? They need to stop crying and work harder. You’re an inspiration and I thank you for all I’ve learned over several years of you making videos ❤

Honey! I'm gonna be 60 years old and I still haul soil from the horse pasture in a trash can attached to a hand truck. You've been at this for a long time and the newcomers never saw your struggles along the way. I have a vision also. Keep your dreams alive. If they can't approve, the heck with them. I wish I had your motivation. Things move so slow for me, but I can relate to what you do. So many times I wanted to message you especially when you were speaking of your illness, but I'm busy with my own garden and projects. The rare times that I actually sit down, I enjoy your videos. So much information whether gardening or just real life experiences. I too would rather give excess produce or eggs away if someone needs them instead of making money off of them. This year, I'm hoping to set up a farm stand in our old horse trailer and see where that goes. Keep up the good work❤

Gardening (flower or food) is not done to only to save money. People garden for many reasons. I personally do not grow food but have a tone of flowers in my yard. A garden of any type can do so much for people's mental health, their physical health, and enjoyment of life. I have seen videos of your kids in the garden enjoying a tomato just like Mama, the time that you get to spend with them in the garden and passing on your knowledge is precious. Even if they never garden after leaving your home, the values that you have imparted on them with the garden is so very great. Simple principles of reaping what you sow is being seen firsthand in those garden beds by your children. The amount of knowledge that you impart to your viewers is wonderful, we are blessed by what you share.

I started in a trailer park. Through hard work, many blessings, luck, and taking whatever opportunities that came we are worth millions. We finally realized we were not struggling when we figured out that we could afford both crunchy and creamy peanut butter at the grocery store. It truly was a surprise! There is a balancing act to stay humble, without bein almost ashamed. It is uncomfortable. People will call you "lucky" and you are. But, many had the same opportunities you had and did not try. Many had excuses and fears that stopped them. You were afraid and scared at one time too. Don't apologize. Just keep doing what you do best. Your failure would be to forget your past, become entitled and not reach down to help others up. Your success at business is every bit as inspirational as your ability to grow a tomato. Keep doing what you do, teach, help, inspire.

Sometimes we forget that by making a space that we love coming back to it becomes less about the grind of growing food for our families and more about the joy of nurturing a space and helps our family grow. Lifted me from my depression into a passion for growing that I see inspiring my friends and neighbors. Getting better mental and physical health, and great veggies too!
