Traubel is the only other soprano [Farrell being the other] who could move from operatic singing to popular singing with any degree of true skill.

Dorothy Kirsten is also excellent in popular music.

Barbara Cook is another one. Well, she was more musical theater, but she had operatic chops IMO.

I had a teacher at University who used to say that Traubel's voice was one of the best produced ever. Thanks for sharing!

The Norwegian The Norwegian Kirsten Flagstad was the greatest and most famous Wagnerian soprano of the 30s-50s, but WWII she wemt back to Norway and the American Traubel took over the Wagnerian roles.

Wow that’s a clear E3 she has! Also such clear vowels and vibrato. You can see how the retracted tongue makes the “eh” vowel so good. A lot of other sopranos turn that vowel into an “ah” which she doesn’t

Forget the insignificant first song. Go to the Wagner. Superb!

Kinda boring first piece but good range!
The ho jo to ho was a bit disappointing, kinda sluggish and not the best pitch either, the last high note was really flat.... But after Frida Leider every Ho jo to ho is disappointing

I love the first piece. I posted it to demonstrate that a great singer is flexible in repertoire. Her English is clear and well audible. The singing is musical and expressive. The recording demonstrates everything good in singing.
Traubel is a classic example of Great singing. Text book example. Her singing is pharyngeal with no nasality or mask manipulation. Her voice development is wonderful. Her muscles are developed, balanced, and well coordinated.
There is a difference between singing with a developed, well coordinated function and one that is similar to Lieder.
I was tempted to post lieder singing. But her voice just doesn't cut it for me. Her vibrato is fluttery. She has little chest and middle voice, they are very weak. The coordination and balance of her voice is not in the same class as Traubel. Essentially she lacks chest coordination. Frieda Lieder has some good qualities but there is no comparison for me. Traubels voice is also bigger and weightier. Far more appropriate for this repertoire.
That is why I do these videos. It is all about the right sound. Knowing the right sound is a big leap for singer, teacher and listener. It is easier when a person actually starts making the right sound themselves because they can relate to it. Once things are explained, it opens doors to ones comprehension of what good singing is.

Je pense plutôt à une MEZZO SOPRANO dramatique ...

tu as raison Steeve.
