I'm very sorry for the double comment, but thank you for the content you provide. It's not just informative, but also very entertaining. I don't want to get all sappy here in the comments, and it's likely you'll never see this, but things have been incredibly rough for my wife and myself lately, and your content gives me something to look forward to, and gives me ideas for teas and such to look forward to trying at some point. Seriously, thank you so much. I don't know if I could really express my gratitude properly.
No, thank YOU so much! It is so great to hear that these videos were able to help you. Kind words from people like you really help to keep us going when the work gets hard so I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know. I really wish you and your wife all the best and let me know if there is anything we can do to help.
What a life, following tea! 🤙 I think this is what I was trying to identify. My neighbor in Jordan had us over once for a thick green "tea" soaked in the leaves like this, and using similar straw. She called it Met'teh.
nice to see our precious mate (or chimarrão, as we also call it in southern brazil) on this channel. about the temperature, the usual water temperature is something between 70 and 80°C. some people may drink it hotter, but at least when the mate is is being prepared, the first infusion should be around 70°C or even lower so the leaves aren't damaged (some styles of yerba mate actually are better prepared first with cold water because it's absorved faster to make the wall/mountain of herb stable). great content again.
Thank you so much! I'm happy to share this incredible drink with everyone. I am often hesitant to drift outside my area of expertise but I do like to talk other drinks I enjoy that are similar to tea and do as much research as I can. I appreciate you taking the time to add your thoughts on this, hopefully it helps others!
FYI you left out Uruguay 🇺🇾 it’s our main drink too and shared culturally with Brazil too. Uruguayan yerba mate is slightly different is more bitter and with less stick on it. We also prepare it differently from Argentinans.
I've been on that yerba mate life for a few weeks now, and I don't know why I waited this long. I prefer the finer-cut stuff with added herbs and spices. I also prefer the roasted and then smoked stuff, but I can drink anything you toss my way.
I'm so glad to hear you like it! I've been on and off yerba mate at different points throughout my life and while I am almost exclusively drinking green tea now, I have been thinking about switching it up and drinking a bombilla in the mornings. Hopefully I'll have some more yerba mate videos to share soon.
I boiled my Yerba mate in a bag with lemongrass loose in the pot and a little cardamom. I added some honey . It’s yummy! But I wish I saw this video first! I would not have boiled according to package directions
Thank you for this informative video. I have a question: I am not clear if you were talking of matcha teas or mate when talking of "smoother/buffering caffeine effects"? Thanks.
when you drink caffeine from coffee for example, you tend to get very jittery, anxious and you can even crash later on in the day when the caffeine wears off. it appears this is not the case as much with matcha
"You can even pass the gourd around with friends." You can also pass mononucleosis around :P That said, I've been looking into Yerba Mate for some time now. Might give the site a look. Thanks for the info!
Hello! I'm Chilean... Where it's also a very popular drink. No, there's no problem other than the caffeine, just as drinking coffee before sleeping... So if you are ok with the energy boost... Go for it 😉
That's what I do! I enjoy learning about other drinks from time to time but I mostly stick to my favorites. By the way, we have some great matcha sales going on right now and some of them will expire in 24 hours: nioteas.com/collections/matcha-powder-and-accessories
It depends on whether it is roasted or unroasted. The roasted ones can get a bit smoky while the unroasted is very strong on these vegetal notes but I would say a bit more astringent compared to a sencha for example
this can happen maybe with the roasted variety. also there are studies that tried to blame the mate for throat cancer, but that's because some people drank it wrongly too hot, plus it's drunk in larger quantities than other hot beverages, so coffee and tea don't get the temperature-cancer mistake.
There are many studies. There is no definite proof yet, but there is evidence. The most damning ones are studies showing varying but often huge amount of PAH (class 1 carcinogen for humans) contamination. The smoke dried ones were the worst offenders, but the smoke free ones still were contaminated, possibly due to pollution in the region where it's grown. At least one study has shown similar amount of PAH metabolites in the urine of Mate drinkers who don't smoke as in smokers who don't drink Mate. Do with that information what you will. I love Mate, but I think there is reason to be careful. I think after reading the studies I'll avoid smoked mate in the future even if it does taste better. Also I'll try to cut back on the amount I drink.
@@jvbob96 The test was performed with water and it was concluded thus far that it was because of the temperature only, not because of some compounds found in the leaves.
You didn't mention Uruguay!!! Uruguay has the highest consumption of Mate per capita in the world, and is located in the center of the geographical region of Mate: Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. In Brazil, only the southern region are Mate drinkers, in particular the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which borders with Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. Paraguay and Uruguay are different countries, their name comes from the same native language. .
we get it from a website that breaks it down by cultivar, picking, harvest etc. The mainstream caffeine numbers tend to be for low quality teas that are way lower in caffeine than some of the premium stuff
Correction: Yerba Mate was discovered and used in Paraguayan province after the division of our territory countries as Argentina, Uruguay were born, they know it in Brazil because when they were a portuguese colony they invaded all the spanish territory of Paraguayan province a stolen a lot of our territories, even traditions and 2 centuries after started a war against Paraguay with Argentina and Uruguay against us. So properly is a paraguayan herb and we didn't want to share with them
While 'tea' is used to refer to herbal extractions of any kind in everyday language, only leaves derived from the *tea plant* are classified as 'tea' officially. Everything else is can be called a 'tisane'/'influsion'/etc. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with saying tea in reference to something like chamomile or mate in everyday conversation, but it's useful to have the terminology to distinguish anything produced by the camellia sinensis plant, especially in regards to buying tea or discussing its properties.
och. if you doing things or drinking something, that if not done exacally right could have carcinogenis effect, and can create cancer, than why would one want to do it at all vs just sticking to what you know is healthy safe.. (cancer patient)
the carcinogen effects comes from the burned leaves, it happens when you use boiling water and don't let it reach all the leaves. it produces small amounts of soot that are carcinogenic with cronic use. don't boil the water, or simply make it reach every leaf and you'll be fine. Boiling ruins the flavor anyway. The correlation with cancer was showed in persons that smoked and/or used Boiling water, and just after decades of exposure
Close to boiling.? lol hell no. almost nobody does that. 🤣 it's should be 60-75 celsius max.! any hotter is simply ruined. yerba mate isn't meant to be a very hot drink. just comfortable level of heat so you can actually enjoy the taste. this are from rather hot countries ffs. Paraguay even have Terere which is the cold version to suit the weather cause most of the time it's hot and humid.
