I found this on Wikipedia: “ Mate was brought to Syria at the beginning of the twentieth century when many residents of the Levant in particular migrated to South America in search of a livelihood. Where they brought this drink with them and it began to spread in many regions of the Levant, specifically Syria and Lebanon, and Syria is the country that consumes the most mate in the world after the countries of South America. “

I am a Syrian and drinking Yerba right now and I can explain the Syrian part. In the early 1900 there was a lot of migrations from Syria to Argentina. Looking for jobs and different life. These people brought Yerba mattea back to Syria when they came for visits. It became so popular in Syria and Syria became the number 1 customer / importer of Yerba mattea to this date. It’s more popular in the cities that are closer to the mediterranean.

Hello Ale , just to answer your question about why this drink is so popular in Syria.
This is due to the arabic immigrants who travelled to Argentina many many years ago, they brought it back to Syria(mainly the city of Latakiya - coastal city) , as they found drinking Yerba Mate helped them cooling down during hot and humid summer nights.
I personally travelled to Latakiyya many times (prior to the Syrian war) and brought Mate from there.

    Thank you!
I started drinking mate fairly recently, trying to branch out and enjoy more different experiences, replacing my afternoon cup of coffee. Being into culinary experiences in general, I like to do them the best they can be, and if it's something that really has a culture attached to it I want to experience that part of it accurately, too.
While I was just having some, I decided to come on and find a video simply to make sure I was making and drinking it properly, and I got that, but your video also taught me a lot of cool stuff about it. I love social/sharing things, and like it even more when there's "ritual" attached to it. Not only did I learn to make it right, now I'll enjoy and appreciate it a lot more when I do.
And by the way, I was finished drinking it before I wrote this thank you comment.
One of my good friends comes to my place a few times a week for a coffee and some conversation. Next time, I'm gonna introduce him to yerba mate.

    • @michaelhendricks9462
      @michaelhendricks9462 3 місяці тому

Haha... Also, I thought powder clogging up my bombilla was because I was getting low-quality yerba or it was getting beat up in shipping or something. I had no idea that avoiding that happening is part of the experience, to the point where it's part of the rules/etiquette ("don't touch the bombilla").

The reason is simple, in the south of Brasil resides the biggest diaspora of syriens :)
It's the biggest colony of syriens outside of Syria, they have stabilished many commerces and restaurants, extremely well integrated in brazilian people, much loved and cherished.

Syria... There was a big migration to Argentina during the 80s, and learn to drink Mate. Then they went back to Syria after Gaddafi's death and took Mate with them. However, yerba mate is difficult to come by over there, and therefore, it became a bounty of war, since only military officers and higher class had access to it. There you go

First cup right now. Just got the straw thingy this morning. Looked at a gourd/cup
but didn't buy one. So I am now sitting here with a Daffy Duck cup that has a inside
like the gourd/cup thing now filled with mate and following your instructions.
First impressions - hmm sort of like a taste between green tea, darjeeling tea and
a sort of paint residue taste with a weird sort of raspberry citrus hint . The taste sort of
stays in your mouth unlike regular tea. Reminds me of standing on a tussock field in the mountains on a hot summer day-
that sort of smell /taste. My son went "urgggh tastes like leaves-no don't like it"- daughter just went "urkkkk" and ran away !
Me - diffinitely a sipping type of drink - yeah it's sort of OK - I keep on putting the hot water in ( am I doomed?..LOL!) .
Flipping awake now like anything...slight buzzing feeling - is that normal?- damn my hot water is almost finished -yeah doomed for sure...

I live in the south of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), close to the Uruguayan border, and I think there is no other piece of land in this world that drinks more yerba mate than here. You can be in a bank, market or post office, and the attendant will have a mate on his desk, or even (believe me) in the middle of a courtroom, and the lawyer will be holding a mate in his hand while arguing with a judge (as I've seen happen).

At the beginning of the video, the lawyer who is arguing has a mate in his hand.
      Exactly, we call chimarrão here.
When I opened your video, by your Italian last name I imagined you were Argentine or Brazilian. Because there are more descendants of Italians in these two countries than in Italy. São Paulo, for example, has more than twice as many descendants of Italians as Rome, the capital of Italy. In other words, it is the city with the most Italians in the world, more than any other city in Italy. And I believe that right after that comes Buenos Aires.

Awesome video! There are many posts on how to prepare it, but this offers a refreshing angle with informative graphics - Well done. It’s fascinating how mate is loved and consumed by countries across the ocean. Regarding Syria 🇸🇾, I know they experienced large-scale emigration to Argentina, primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due to economic opportunities and political instability in the region. This migration facilitated the exchange of cultural practices, such as the adoption of mate consumption, which was then reintroduced to their homeland upon their return. Syrian immigrants in Argentina are often referred to as “sirio-libaneses” or “sirio-libanesas,” which translates to “Syrian-Lebanese” in English. This term reflects the historical pattern of immigration from both Syria and Lebanon to Argentina. Witnessing the blending of cultures is enriching, and I believe the first generation of Syrian immigrants made a wise decision in bringing this wonderful drink back home. I hope this can fill in a bit of information on the Syrian aspect of the mate journey. I’m currently sipping Rosamonte Especial and planning on wrapping up the evening with Palyadito! Thanks for the post and keep it up!

The only things to know about mate, coming from an argentinian is that: It has quite a bit of caffeiine (close but less than coffee, though you brew over and over), bad breath, its diuretic., its bitter.
Well no, also, dont boil the water or you burn the herbs and also try to take out as much dust as possible and not move the straw or it will likely clog

I know it isn't the way it is meant to be drank but I just pour this stuff into a french press, pour some cold water on it, fill the press with pour over temperature water, then set it on my desk and fill my cup. I'll continue to refill it with pour over temp water until their is no more flavor or I don't want any more caffeine.

Don't drink too hot, you can drink mate at 60 or 70°C also.
Someone I know destroyed his tounge by drinking mate way too hot all the time. Now he can't taste anything anymore. That's something that I certainly don't want to risk.
Too hot food or drinks are bad for your digestive system also.

Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. I live in California and have been drinking yerba mate for a decade now. It has truly become my companion. It fits perfectly with my lifestyle as a musician and visual designer. I typically pour cold water before the hot water, which allows the yerba to expand into the gourd nicely and keep the integrity of its nutrients. Once the cold water is absorbed and the yerba has thicken, I place my bombilla.

Some tips if you are drinking mate. The final slurp should not be a severe one. Do not hold the mate too long when it is your turn (any Argentine will tell you "it is not a microphone!"). Do not say "Thank you" unless you are done for good... I know it is counter intuitive if you are a polite person like myself, but if you say thank you after the first one, don't be surprised if you get skipped on the second round. Do not move the bombilla... do not stir it, do not pull it out. Also, if you don't want to burn the leaves, for the first mate, you can add just a tiny bit or room temperature or cold water to protect the yerba mate.
In Cordoba, where I am from, we add peperina to the mate, if we have some handy. Some people add dry orange or lemon peel.

I had no idea why Syrians were a major exporter of Yerba, but I looked it up.
After WW1 was over a lot of Syrians were displaced and came to South America, mostly looking for jobs in the coffee trade, but they soon found that the traditions of drinking Yerba Mate suited their culture well and after many Syrians returned home either for good, or just a visit they came home with sackfuls of Yerba and it had been popular there ever since.

I like it with fresh squeezed lime also, but sugar is extreme, it doesn't really compliment the flavor well. The boiling water makes it taste very bitter. Can you soak the yerba mate in water and drink that brew after filtering, separately in a glass like we drink coffee? That procedure would be considered sacrilege! @@sudhindrakopalle7071 haha it would be a sacrilege indeed! do you pour hot water or cold water? The key when the liquid is not coming out is the powder. Before even putting the bombilla we need to shake the yerba in the mate as if it was a cocktail, making sure most of the powder is out, then we pour hot water on a side for few seconds and that will be where we put the bombilla, then we dig the hole and this should work. Sometimes the problem is the bombilla itself is too small so a bit powder gets stuck too.

The very first sip will also be too strong, Brazilian gauchos call it the "poison" of Mate, usually it's spat out, or braved on, by the Cevador. You are right about it being an acquired taste! But, it's the same for us too! As children, we start drinking mate with sugar, getting used to the temperature and the bitterness, and with time, we scale to the traditional way. it's okay to drink it sweet!

I know someone who was at war a number of years back against a terror regime in the region and he was fighting along side locals. When they got down time between fighting they would sit around and drink tea with the local soldiers. One of them brought Mate to the person I know and that is where he first tried it. He would drink it with the local fighters in between battles in the desert cities of those middle eastern regions.

However, worth saying that most people should avoid drinking it on an empty stomach as doing so might put you at high risk of experiencing negative side effects such as acid reflux, heartburn, nausea, anxiety, restlessness, headaches, and heart palpitations just to name a few. Again... never happened to me as probably I've done it for decades but I'd still recommend try eating something before just in case :)

Another question: I saw a tutorial where someone used warm milk instead of water. I tried it and it tasted great. A bit of bitterness from the leaves and a bit of sweetness from the milk. Is this unacceptable, culturally seen?

I usually drink it in the morning. No sugar, sometimes honey.

@@AleSalvino yeah my grandmother introduced me to mate when I was a pup, and she would add a small drizzle of honey before adding the water. For her the honey jar was almost as important as the water.

I have a question because I am interested in replacing my morning coffee with mate. When you drink it does herbs ever go through the straw? Do you just eat them?

    • @AleSalvino
      @AleSalvino  2 роки тому +2

Hi Luis! Glad to hear you want to try :) Herbs never go through the straw. You will just sip and drink water as if it was a tea but with the herbs flavour. Give it a go and let me know if you have more questions! 🧉

As a gaúcho (someone who is born in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul) the chimarrão (as we call the drink itself) is merely drunk as a tea through the bomba (as we call the bombilla) without any yerba mate coming through it.
But if any solid particulates of the yerba mate comes through the bombilla, the best option is a specialized "condom" made of thin cloth or paper that is made exactly to avoid this situation, and you put it on the part of the bombilla that goes inside of the gourd. This way, you can drink without worry of solids going through the bombilla or clog the holes of the bombilla.
I hope that this information helps.

What Yerba Mate would you recommend for beginners? Xx

    • @AleSalvino
      @AleSalvino  4 місяці тому +2

Good question. Let’s talk about taste. A big part of the yerba taste is whether it has stems (con palos) or no stems (sin palos). Basically, the yerba mate plant is harvested for its leaves, dust, and stems. Producers separate these elements and then recombine them in the proportion that they want for the blend. For yerba with stems, the blend contains these twig-like stems. Since stems dilute the yerba, they make the flavor softer and less bitter. Stems also brew more slowly than leaves and dust, which gives the mate a good balance. They also add nutritional value. So Yerba with stems is preferred in Argentina and Paraguay. It’s great for mate newbies because this yerba is typically less bitter. Go for this 🙏🏼
