Thank you as always for an insightful and well done retrospective. I’m glad you gave a shout out to the Snake Tales and highly recommend you give them another chance, if inclined and have the time. They are challenging and test your patience in a trial and error way, but they are profound in the regards to how they are alternate “what if” stories, using MGS2’s settings and characters. The stories are full intrigue, twists and have greater impact when you compare how their alternating endings. Confidential Legacy and Dead Man’s Whispers are my personal favourites. Enjoy!
I'll give Snake tales another shot sometime in the future, I just need to do it before playing the main game so I'm not burnt out by the end. I'm looking forward to what the stories of Snake tales have to offer. Also I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I can help give some clarification for Rose. Rose started out as a spy for the Patriots and was supposed to play the role of Jack's ideal girlfriend. However, shortly before Raiden's part in MGS2 began Rose honestly did fall in love with him and in the position she was granted on the Codec tried to help Raiden out and derail the Patriots plans in the process. This includes subtly hinting that she is lieing about her past, trying to get Raiden to not focus on the fake mission and instead focus on seeing tomorrow and finally getting him to deal with his past so the Patriots can't use it to control him anymore. The Codec call where she mentions she is pregnant is the last call with the real Rose, as after that she is replaced with another AI and put into danger. (as confirmed in the Master collection's book) The past Raiden is desperately running from is when Soildus forced him to be a child solider aka Jack the Ripper the white devil. Raiden is actually rather fond of his time in New York.
Great video, pretty fun briefing of the story. At the beggining I was also confused with the narrative of the game bc of the fact they drop you 3 plot twists + lore + kojimas philosophy right after you fight 10 metal gear ray. Even tho the message of the IA is pretty clear till the end so when Jack(you) understood how to obtain his real freedom and show the importance of your legacy followed by Snake's speech just to show you Liberty Statue with the tittle on screen idk if its just me but thats cinema.
Where does this “universally hated” narrative come from??? I keep hearing it and it’s just not true at all. It’s the highest rated game in the series. There were people that didn’t like it but the overall consensus was people loved it.
I don't think MGS2 is misunderstood tbh. I think its a good, but super convoluted story told in a really incoherent way. If it's misunderstood, its because it went out of its way to be difficult to understand. More importantly its a story told in a way that it conflicts with its job as a video game narrative. Most the story is told in long exposition dumps, often in codec calls which interrupt gameplay. Additionally, the pacing of the story is so sporadic and imbalanced that it really makes is hard to enjoy it, especially on a first play through. The one other major issue for me was the constantly changing story. The game lied to me so often about what the plot or story was that I stopped investing in it as it all just became irrelevant noise. This isnt to say I didn't like the game or the story, just that the experience was disruptive and annoying which made trying to enjoy it much more difficult. It is certainly better on a second playthrough or consumed as a video and with the benefit of the knowledge of already experiencing the story once before.
this is a terrific review, highly entertaining. keep up keeping on 🤙
Thanks, I appreciate that.

Oh right I forgot. Thanks for letting me know.
How does this have less than 500 views? This is great content.
Thanks I appreciate that.
Literally my favorite metal gear lore wise.
It's a shame this game is so disrespected

Act 1 in MGS2 was nothing short of legendary!
