A lady at the boulangerie corrected me in the same way. J'ai dit "Bonjour je voudrais une pain au chocolate" and then the lady said "UN, un pain au chocolate ! ". And then we both laughed. I said désolé et merci. She knew I was American and she told me her son is in New York, then I told her I'm from New York and then she kept saying French words that I didn't quite understand. It was a very pleasant interaction. She told me I'll understand some day.

@Magali GIL Don't act like we're the only weird/rude ones when people in the rest of France look down on people who say "chocolatine" like we're some kind of dirty savages. The hostility goes both ways and honestly it's really not that deep. Anyone who does take it seriously is just a dumb asshole, no matter the region.

@Anny AmayaAyala so i am in lille (north of france) since august and i really like it here! of course it is not a normal situation, a lot of time at home, bars and unis closed. the french people are not the easiest to approach, they often like to stay with people they already know. but where i am are so so many international students, it‘s super cool. i am in a school of management and we have to do lots of groupprojects; working with the french is super annoying because they are not very motivated and don‘t work until last minute😂 i love the french architecture & pastries. also france is such a beautiful country, you‘ll find many places to visit!

    Hi,
I found your conversation really interesting.
Especially at the start. French people seem to have a reputation, for not learning english, or the stereotype is that they can speak it but choose not to.
Every time I go to France I try to practice my French, and always get a response in English.
I find it very hard to practice over there. I very much feel that the stereotype has now gone the other way, and this makes it difficult to learn French.

    • @giulioascari214
      @giulioascari214 3 роки тому +4

Agree, I have the same experience when traveling to France. I was speaking just French in order to practice, for instance by renting the audio-guide in French in museums : when they heard my Italian accent, they said "are you really sure you want it in French?".
Also, working at a university, I deal with French universities and we interact easily in English.

    • @connorgessel302

French people are mean? Maybe not. But much of visitors interactions are with sales ladies. Les vendeuses sont tres effrayantes. All the students in my French class in Paris learned to say, "j'ai peur de la vendeuse." Our teachers were confused. They didn't think the salesladies were mean. But in America, we are used to them saying, "You look so beautiful! You look young! That looks amazing on you!" In Paris they will certainly tell you if something looks too tight or too young for you. Which to us is horribly insulting. Our teacher asked, "don't you want them to tell you the truth?" We all said, "Non!" We have eyes. We don't need you to tell us we are fat and aging. Tell us we are fabulous!

So fun hearing your reactions. Nobody corrected my French when I visited France, but people did let me know if they were annoyed with me or if they were being friendly. The stereotype of Americans living to work is pretty accurate. The French have a better work life balance than us. That is an interesting point you make about Americans putting more emphasis on extra-curricular activities and hobbies...I think it's because (in general) we like to be creative, are very individualistic, and need a break from work :D. I never really thought about that.

I'm trying so hard to catch up with your accent 😅 I'm a French student. I can speak a little and understand beginner'd french audio but I cannot understand when I listen to most native french speaker. Hope I get there some day!

I finished the series yesterday and thought it was great! So the one scene where Sylvie addresses Emily in French directly instead of English is because Sylvie believed it was Madeline (Emily’s boss who is a French speaker). I would love to see you guys reaction to some of the other episodes!

Good video, thank you. What you said about French people, pushing foreigners aside, they prefer each others company, you can say that about almost every nationality. I live in the UK and British people don't mix with immigrants. I have never had a meaningful, deep conversation with a Brit, because they don't share their opinion with foreigners. (And I have been here for almost 20 years now.) They are very nice people but you will never know what they really think. I just started to learn French and Spanish because I think it's time to experience other cultures as well. I like your videos, they are very natural.

I have been in France for 8 months now learning the language, I can tell you that it is true how the French people correct us, it has happened to me already, I am an au pair, went to pick up the children that I looked after and said "je suis le au pair" she corrected me with a very stern look! Like I was stupid for making this mistake. I think it depends on the person I guess, but it is true! Most french people correct us, which is a great way to learn also! I have been around groups of french people for the past 2 years now also, even though we are all very close they struggle greatly to speak English when we are all together. This bothered me for a long time because I felt left out, but now I take it as a learning experience! Thank you for this video!

Live to work. Or. Work to live. In America, it really depending on individuals. But mostly it depends on the area. If the main character is from Chicago then I’d say it’s likely true that most people in that city “live to work”.
Thanks for your videos! I’m learning French ans this is very helpful! 🥰

Hi Emily, I just returned to the US after one year. I loved many things about Paris. I visited parks, famous areas, and museums and I love the language. I walked 8 miles a day in many different directions. I lived in the 12th arrondissement - not far from Bastille and Nation (loved it). I fell in love with my walks along the Seine. I also visited many places outside of Paris. Unfortunately, I did encounter enough negative experiences that, eventually, t made me quite cautious/reluctant to interact in with certain groups in Paris. I found the small enterprises (which tended to be family owned) very welcoming and friendly. I had ugly experiences in the big stores, when I tried to arrange my phone/internet connection at SFR, in one shoe store the female attendant barked at me for trying to speak French (she demanded that I speak English), I tried to volunteer with animals and the woman was so rude at the front desk that I gave up the idea immediately. My mattress never arrived from IKEA and after 6 trips to the store, I canceled my purchase. I joined a number of groups made up of foreigners and everyone told me about the "Parisian rudeness." Many of them had a personal story to tell. I have a few questions: I wondered if there is a negative stereotype of Americans? I am not American but I live in the US and most French assumed I was American because my accent is not from England and they could not place it (I am Guyanese). I am 61 and I wondered if you can tell me if it might be the generation. The other issue I'd like to learn about is the attitude to the immigrants that I saw living in so many tents, parks and under bridges. And, my last question is pretty touchy so you do not have to answer. What kinds of discrimination do groups face in France (Paris)? Are there French laws that allow women and other French (but different ethnic or racial) individuals or groups to challenge inequality? If you don't want to deal with these subjects, can you suggest some readings please. Thank you. I love listening to your show.

It seems that the script supervisor was Louise Arhex, who graduated from La Femis, Paris. So she must have known she was playing to cliches. Entertainment over authenticity. But I learned a lot from your reactions - thank you.

I think, the more you go west, towards paris and farther, the faster they speak and "swallow" stuff. I like how you both spoke because I did understand pretty much but I think also the girl on the right has been very restrained and spoke more clearly as always... the French speaking people in Switzerland are so much nicer to you if you don't speak french as good as they yeah hahah but I like your vids en francais (sorry for not having a c cedille lol)

I am part-French in origin (long ago) and so I've always been interested in the French. I've had a few French naval pilots as students over the years. So, here go my general observations: as a group they do not immediately warm-up, BUT, this varies by individual, too. We can share, we are cordial, but there is something withheld about them in general. I think they regard study the same as they do work: when they're at work, it is work. Play is outside. They are dedicated to the task at hand, meticulous and flawless in performance. So, in that respect, it makes life easy for me! The French are actually a real contrast with the Italians although they are cultural cousins. With the Italians, the getting-to-know you part is effortless - and fun. The French to me are like a cat. Distant, mysterious, and interesting.
