I used the "Can't be marked" thing once, on the Swine King, because by chosing the Rank 3 party member it made the Wilbur AI prioritize the frontline to mark because he couldn't mark one of the backline. That allowed me to use the scales from her nightmare to set up ignoring the king's damage then stomp him in the following turns. It was really good that time, but it clearly was a very specific situation and I wouldn't have used it if my party wasn't already in good condition.
I sometimes fall asleep to these videos since they're long, your voice is nice and has the same level of tone thats not overly excited, and its fun to listen to

i personally find that the shieldbreaker is great when fighting the shambler because she can take out adds if one gets a few buffs stacked, can almost always hit the shambler itself and because of her *fantastic* row versatility.
I can't believe I never used shieldbreaker, didn't realize how insane she was. Think I had a really bad experience when I was new and assumed she was garbage but her pierce and full roster blight attack is crazy.
That must felt bad when the only thing on her dlc is SB herself. At least you learned her true potential, i am having problems to use her in early game too but i know how strong the pierce armor will be later
Spear lady goes stab She is pretty busted for me since she covers everything I want, lots of range for her melee, ranged dot attacks and easy movement corrections
I think that the Cuirboilli trinket inst really a necessity like you make it seem, especially really late game. I think that its good if you need to lower her speed to make her dance work with another character. Personally, if I'm going for hit points and tanky-ness i usually look to the overture box, which works really well with the district basically negating the one downside to it, and I also like heart trophy one that gives you bleed resist, especially if I'm going somewhere with lots of bleed. Also i'd really like to see a guide to the flagellant, as I have a lot of trouble deciding what elements of that character to lean into when building a setup and team around him
I do hype up cuirboilli quite a bit, and I probably didn't make a big enough point about the - speed on it. I like it for both the hp spike and the speed penalty since most of my SB teams have speed setups to influence turn order. You're right though there are a lot of great places to get hp like overture and flesh heart. I think Flagellant is a good one to do next. Partly because no one else has asked to see a specific character, and the first 2 have been damage dealers so doing a video on someone with a lot of versatility sounds fun.
With the scales from Shieldbreaker's nightmares I managed to complete a mission where I accidentally didn't bring a healer (and also not enough food for a no healer run, as I was planning to bring one but simply forgot). With those blocks and a bit of luck, nobody died.
As always another fantastic guide. Glad you decided to make a Shieldbreaker guide. I never thought about using marks to essentially transfer damage to an out of reach position. Debuffing the enemy can also function as a nice bonus, although the Dodge debuff isn't always that helpful (shrieker maybe?) but it can help you guarantee hits on dodgy backliners, like those frustratingly annoying vomit piggies. The SB's armor piercing is so rare and useful that it feels downright mandatory to bring her to some fights, like The Thing From The Stars and that crystal enemy in the endless Farmstead. Even the GR's pick to the face can't hit the back line. She really can do anything, except stun, but almost every other hero can stun anyway so who cares? She's definitely fragile in the early game, but serpent sway does help with that a good bit, as you pointed out, and the speed buff is pretty great for improving turn economy so it doesn't feel like you're losing out on damage at all. Btw, one strategy I usually use is putting HWM in rank 3 so he can Duelist's Advance first turn to get that early parry, and then Impale to set up PBS for the next turn. The downside is you pretty much have to have captivate in case HWM doesn't go first on that next turn, unless HWM is significantly faster than the SB, or you don't mind using Serpent Sway or Pierce to set it up again next turn, depending on the differences in speed. Anyway, excellent guide. Stoked for whichever you go with next.

I am not sure, but eventually there was a lunge's nurf that prevented it from attacking rank 4, and the same patch pierce was allowed to attack 4th. That was a turning point. Or that is just my mind plays tricks on me. Upd: lunge was not changed, but pierce used to target 1,2. Amazing buff to allow 3,4
Using two shieldbreakers in the front ranks, both using pierce - with the right trinkets they can form a leap-frogging wheel of crit-hitting death that can plow through regular enemies and bosses. (I often give them the surgical gloves and then another trinket that boosts crit or damage - so the ancestors trinket that gives bonus melee damage and crit is a good one or the accuracy ring. think that's what it's called. or the trinket that gives a bonus 20% damage. with the light being low-ish they can crit like nuts, for 40-50 damage a hit - and might crit every other hit. up there with Arcanist with his ring with regard to reliability with critting. I'm going to have to test out impale, b/c I don't think I've ever really used it much - but after watching the video I think I'm going to try it out.
Dang I suck at this game. My brain just doesn't quite understand how to manage all of the stress, damage, sicknesses, and quirks yet. I'm sure I'll get there. Playing on the Vita too (gaming on the go with 2 kids) so I'm sure the limited screen real estate is a factor.
I know this is a late comment, but this is easily one of the most difficult games to learn and play efficiently. If you are having difficulties, don't sweat it. I have one kid myself and the game was VERY difficult to learn initially. I lost a ton of heroes and abandoned a lot of quests. Dont get discouraged. This game is very difficult, but also very rewarding once you learn the mechanics and are able to beat it on the more challenging difficulties. I hope you're doing well in the game! :)
I hate this unit so much, I didn't know about the NIGHTMARES and it took what would be a chill low level antiquarian farm and gave all 4 of my units max stress/deaths door panic until the end. No one died by a miracle but literally every hero went from low stress to constant heart attacks for the final 3 battles. She also locked in lazy eye at level 1, dismissed, never again.
Sandstorm is good for riposting maa when there is hard mark hitters (tentacle_devour_crit_for_70.jpg). Might also work for marking bosses so you can sometimes effectively gain free turn. Still too situational to use. I've tried Jestal/HWM/SB with HWM going first at farmstead, and it's really hard pair to have consistent turn order without needing too much specific +speed -speed trinkets and quirks. Definetly possible, but you need that equipment first. And it's not like either of them have nothing to do in rank 2. If you want to not change positions to save other's position, both have good moves which don't move them around at both rank 1 and 2, vice versa is true as well. I like to run dot resistances, so I do that before other things, as such with only one trinket slot for each it's close to impossible. But if you can make that work you can find an actual use for grape shot: as an opening hwm goes first, hits enemies, damage+lower crit res, and then sb goes 3-4 crits with impale. Disgusting.
Another upside: SB absolutely embarrasses Crocodilian! She jabs him when he's in the front or back, and Puncture pulls him out of the middle before he can submerge! She's single handedly made that fight 100% less stressful!
The reason why most aoe attacks are mostly all-hit or all-miss is because an attack gets random acc modifier for all hits, then it adds up to character's acc and removes each enemy's individual dodge. This random acc modifier is not for each single hit, it's for the whole attack. Get unlucky, threw D100 and roll 1, and then get dodge'd 4 times unless your totall acc is >=95 individual enemy's dodge.
I won't lie, my go-to memory farming squad every time is Vestal-Jester-SB-SB. Double impale spam with battle ballad spam is true easy mode. It's honestly difficult to lose anyone in Farmstead with this comp. Although I usually don't bother doing the endless part of endless mode; I'm there to kill Fracture/Sleeper and take my booty, so i'm not sure how it fares going for the highest round possible.
I love stacking trinkets to get fat Blight chance on shieldbreaker. It's so satisfying to spam captivate on even weald enemies. I'm not a big fan of all 4 enemy attack skills because I thought they're all weak(I'm looking at you, hounds harry low rolling for 2s) but I never realized that impale can still do high damage. I'll have to try it.

Finally, one of these where I actually have an opinion from playing the character. So on SB's Sandstorm skill, I actually use it almost every run! The reason being, my SB team is from back to front, Vestal, Jester, Leper, Shieldbreaker, and I always pump up my Leper with all the buffs I can, and he almost always has Withstand, so I use Sandstorm for the free Prot and resistances to make him untouchable, all my other characters use buff skills like eye of the tiger on Leper so after a camp, he's usually never missing and regularly landing crits, while SB pierce spams and uses aegis only when necessary (fighting a giant for example).
I don't know if I have asked this before, so sorry if I have, but can you stack scouting or trap disarm on either a person or as a group? So a trinket in this video (50:00) is +10%/+10% scouting and traps. If character A has +10% scouting and character B has +10 scouting does that mean that the group has a +20% scouting?
Curious if you considered an occultist instead of a vestal for the mark party? He gives you access to another mark, if he is not healing (usually early in a fight he won’t be). You lose the vestals group heal & stun, so it might be worse. But if you are going all in on mark like that, might be worth it. Love you videos, keep up the great work.
I think the occultist would work just fine and I did consider him. I value the vestal stun in this comp a lot to hit that rank 3 if you aren't setting up flashbang. However occultist does have a lot of utility and damage potential in his own right. So I think you raise a good point.
People always forget about Rank 2 / Rank 1 Occultist. His stun is strictly BETTER THAN VESTAL stun. Crazy powerful with 10% higher base stun chance and access to excellent class-only stun trinkets; it also has naturally high crit and excellent damage. It reaches ranks 1, 2, and 3 just like vestal stun. Managing high light is a little harder but honestly w/e, it is totally worthwhile to pay for an extra 2 torches to be much more likely to land the Occultist stun with its higher stun chance, higher damage, and higher crit. Throw a defensive trinket on your Occultist and maybe a +stun% class trinket if you really need to stun Large monsters and you are golden to chill in melee ranks and spam stuns, hexes/marks/pulls, crit daggers, and heals!
Shieldbreaker is so much fun. I love everything about her, from her design to her unique mechanics to her background as a dancer being expressed through her moves moving her back and forward in the ranks... perfect character.

I would argue Spectral Speartip COULD be bad because Puncture is necessary for disabling Shaman and Courtiers, as well as other enemies, for stalling purposes or just shuffling other backliners; it's fairly useless if you hit the wrong target, and Milo Murphy called and told me that 5% will proc more than you expect if you really don't want it to. Because Darkest Dungeon.
You can give bh a quickdraw charm but ultimately you may not need mark on turn 1 so you can just attack or use bh to stun and save mark for the big threats.
Or another way is start her in position 1, have her use adders kiss to move her back into the 2nd position. Setup a mark on an enemy in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th position incase the enemy in 1st or 2nd dies to the blight so that way the marked enemy shifts to the 3rd position and not to first which would put em out of range of captivate. I’ve had great success with using her in a DOT+mark setup that way. Party: Houndmaster, jester, flagellant and shieldbreaker. Houndmaster for putting down marks, damage and stress heals. Jester to buff with battle ballad, stress heals, harvest for DOT and slice off for DOT and crit. Flagellant with punish, rain of sorrows, then either a combo of reclaim/redeem, reclaim/exsanguinate or exsanguinate/Redeem. I prefer reclaim/exsanguinate so that way he has 3 self heals that deals high bleed damage and a big heal. Now finally Shieldbreaker, adders kiss for big damage and blight on position 1 or 2, captivate to hit marked enemies in position 2 or 3, pierce to ignore enemy prot and puncture to get rid of guard and move out of 4th position as puncture can be used everywhere and hit everything. That’s the most effective team I’ve used and it can be used pretty much everywhere like Ruins, warrens, weald, cove and courtyard except for farmstead due to the flagellants limited healing, in that case be sure to bring sharddust.
Weak early on? I just got the ancestral edition on switch and got her after a few dungeons, I have two now and both absolutely dominate everything. Idk if I'm lucky but they dodge most attacks and the rest tend to do very low damage, its my favorite class now
Imo she is pretty weak early on. At level 3 for her weapon and skills she gets a gigantic +2 speed and impale gets blight, which turns it from an average cleave to the best in the game. If you think she's good now, then just wait til she gets some upgrades :)
I got killed by using Blasphemous Vial once and I never tries to get it again. +25% stress is just too much. My legend PD in Courtyard starts at full health and 0 stress. got 4 bloodsuckers attack, then next round get another 2 attack. All crits. He went to 200 stress and then 0 health and just died. I think the item is a bit overrated, might even be a trap.

Hit points are required, (dunno if he was out yet or not, I don't remember when the various dlcs came out) flagellant would beg to differ
Never had a Shield Breaker die. I think the game's programming protects them. I have 7 SBs on my roster.

Yes. In the provisions screen the scouting chance is shown in the top right and takes the base chance and adds any trinkets

Plus you get that added fun/stress of never knowing when he is going to heal someone near death for 0 or 1.

People always forget about Rank 2 / Rank 1 Occultist. His stun is strictly BETTER THAN VESTAL stun. Crazy powerful with 10% higher base stun chance and access to excellent class-only stun trinkets; it also has naturally high crit and excellent damage. It reaches ranks 1, 2, and 3 just like vestal stun.
Managing high light is a little harder but honestly w/e, it is totally worthwhile to pay for an extra 2 torches to be much more likely to land the Occultist stun with its higher stun chance, higher damage, and higher crit.
Throw a defensive trinket on your Occultist and maybe a +stun% class trinket if you really need to stun Large monsters and you are golden to chill in melee ranks and spam stuns, hexes/marks/pulls, crit daggers, and heals!

I would argue Spectral Speartip COULD be bad because Puncture is necessary for disabling Shaman and Courtiers, as well as other enemies, for stalling purposes or just shuffling other backliners; it's fairly useless if you hit the wrong target, and Milo Murphy called and told me that 5% will proc more than you expect if you really don't want it to.

I'm not sure how the mark team works well if SB has 9 speed and BH has 7. How does he put the mark down before SB uses captivate?
You can give bh a quickdraw charm but ultimately you may not need mark on turn 1 so you can just attack or use bh to stun and save mark for the big threats.
Ah quickdraw charm is a neat idea, the speed buff from his mark offsets the penalty after round 1.
Or another way is start her in position 1, have her use adders kiss to move her back into the 2nd position. Setup a mark on an enemy in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th position incase the enemy in 1st or 2nd dies to the blight so that way the marked enemy shifts to the 3rd position and not to first which would put em out of range of captivate. I’ve had great success with using her in a DOT+mark setup that way. Party: Houndmaster, jester, flagellant and shieldbreaker. Houndmaster for putting down marks, damage and stress heals. Jester to buff with battle ballad, stress heals, harvest for DOT and slice off for DOT and crit. Flagellant with punish, rain of sorrows, then either a combo of reclaim/redeem, reclaim/exsanguinate or exsanguinate/Redeem. I prefer reclaim/exsanguinate so that way he has 3 self heals that deals high bleed damage and a big heal. Now finally Shieldbreaker, adders kiss for big damage and blight on position 1 or 2, captivate to hit marked enemies in position 2 or 3, pierce to ignore enemy prot and puncture to get rid of guard and move out of 4th position as puncture can be used everywhere and hit everything.
That’s the most effective team I’ve used and it can be used pretty much everywhere like Ruins, warrens, weald, cove and courtyard except for farmstead due to the flagellants limited healing, in that case be sure to bring sharddust.

Weak early on? I just got the ancestral edition on switch and got her after a few dungeons, I have two now and both absolutely dominate everything. Idk if I'm lucky but they dodge most attacks and the rest tend to do very low damage, its my favorite class now
Imo she is pretty weak early on. At level 3 for her weapon and skills she gets a gigantic +2 speed and impale gets blight, which turns it from an average cleave to the best in the game. If you think she's good now, then just wait til she gets some upgrades :)

You have to upgrade the skill to unlock that. It starts inflicting blight at rank 3 :)

I got killed by using Blasphemous Vial once and I never tries to get it again. +25% stress is just too much. My legend PD in Courtyard starts at full health and 0 stress. got 4 bloodsuckers attack, then next round get another 2 attack. All crits. He went to 200 stress and then 0 health and just died. I think the item is a bit overrated, might even be a trap.

She doesn't get blight until impale is level 3. It's weird like that. Just keep upgrading it :)
