  • One small step further and I now have a gearbox and engine block separation. Disassembly is the easy part (I think) and now my engine and gearbox assembly education begins….

    Hey Randy, thank you for that but you have inspired me a little more. I had lost my mojo for working on the Mini, family stuff, you know what i mean!!. I started my resto in 1988 but you meet someone, kids, marriage,mortgage thus no time or money. Fast forward to 2014 i got the Mini down from my moms and started it but then lost my mojo but got it back in the start of lockdown. You have kept my mojo going because i know it would have ground to a halt again. We all need help sometimes. Funnily enough i had a memory yesterday pop up on Facebook, it was a picture from 2014 of my new M-Machine floor.
    But yes, i found that just a 20/30 minute mess here and there does really seem to help and stops you forgetting where you were too. The "lost the mojo" moments, when you get it back, you just stand there looking at your Mini thinking, "where the hell do i start, where was i" lol.

    Hi Randy, the block alignment studs are called dowels, the one with a hole through (Tubular) has a bolt (and nut) through it on early engines. The two studs at the back (Aft! (you make me laugh!)) are there above the differential housing as there's less room to get bolts in at those locations. You're getting along great, one step at a a time! Cheers! Flip Flops, Chinese safety boots or Thongs down here..... G'day!

      LoL... love the ‘safety boots’ I will feel like I’m being safe from here on out. Thanks for the education as it all makes sense when explained!!

    Nice one. I understand the boxes are easily damaged so you can be pleased to have gotten it so cleanly 👍

      When you say “box”, are you referring to the engine block? At this point I wouldn’t know a good from the bad...

      @@LoneStarMini sorry buddy i just meant the gearbox is really easy to damage if you were to strike if to get it off. Yours seemed to come off very easily 👍

    ARP head studs! Fancy!, you normally undo them using the allan key socket in the top and if that doesnt work just use a proper stud removal tool, if you dont have one then use two nuts as you did. Its a big unf size. For turning the engine on a stand - stand at the front with a foot on the frame and that way you can turn the engine over, and wiggle it towards you to get the hole to align as it naturally slides back away from you. For the dowels - dont lose them, they are no longer available, and the central two suds above the diff housing - its normal but you often see them replaced with short bolts. I told you the gearbox might be a two person lift, certainly being short wont make it easy!

      Stud remover I use works on the same principle as this one - it grips the plain shank and doesnt affect the threads. www.uktools.com/stud-remover-installer.html

      Thanks Rich, you’re a wealth of knowledge. I did not realize those two dowels, I did not realize they come out. They appear to be press first it. Also... can’t believe I didn’t notice an Allen key would work in the end of the stud/dowel... geez.... the gearbox wasn’t as heavy as it was awkward...

    I noticed you are wearing Australian safety boots. LoL if you'd dropped a 12 point ring spanner over the stud before you put the nuts on you wouldn't have had to use vice grips. My back felt for you when you lifted the gearbox, and I don't have bad back.

      @LoneStarMini  3 роки тому

      Well that’s too dang smart, but I don’t believe I have a 12 point wrench... actually it was more awkward than heavy because I’m short!!

      Thanks Tony.. I know I know.. flip flops are simply the norm and easy. I wore socks with my flip flops for "protection" when I was doing welding practice.. yeah.. not so good.. LoL..

    why dont you take the diff off the gearbox first and make the gearbox lighter
