If you are serious about racing then attention to detail makes a significant difference. My idea is to examine every part and try to think of everything that can be done to reduce friction, noise, vibration etc.
Hi I have on occasions sanded some gears to minimise wobble and eccentricity. However the real issue is not so much the outer edge as the contact patch between the two gears. In a perfect gear the contact patch should be the same radius for every tooth. With an eccentric spur that point varies with each tooth. That means each rotation there is a slight cyclic load change. That means inefficient energy transfer. Something I don't see with metal gears. I built a dyno that tends to show smooth meshes produce more power at the tyre.
Top man! I shall try this. So technically the motor now sits @ and angle as the rear mount was not shimed right? I usually hot glue the motors in to, this stops torque twist and vibration movement. I have a 11T on my spare sidewinder short can and want to put a 9 on there but now it won’t mesh so I either need a larger spur or do what you did and shim.
Hi, The shim is so thin it hardy alters the angle of the motor. You can buy pinion gears with different numbers of teeth but the same outside diameter. The shimming isn't to accommodate different size gears but to eliminate or reduce the backlash. I find the car runs a bit quieter. Theoretically there should be better transfer of power if the teeth on the meshing gears are closer but not so close as to be binding.
Sweet! Yeah I’m sure it works ok it’s just in my mind I can see the gear mesh will be tighter one side like an anglewinder so to speak. But yeah only by a few thousandths. I’ve just found a 12T with the same 3.75mm diameter yeah so thanks for the confirmation. I have some backlash I will get rid of this way too. Have you got any ‘slot-it’ cars? I have two and they both are so quiet it’s unreal! Make my scalextric cars sound like a diesel! Lol
Good explanation!!!! Thanks for the video!!! Subbed your channel!
Appreciate the video, im intermediate now so still learning about gear mesh etc - the finer points

Hello, you mentioned slightly eccentric which can cause binding in that area of the spur gear, couldn't you lightly sand the eccentricity out?

Feel free to contact me for discussions on tuning Scalextric cars, particularly those that run on wooden tracks.

Good information, thanks.
Glad to assist. I just did this to a second car and needed a much thicker shim (0.1mm). So disappointed with the poor gear set ups in some cars.
