Different material same result. If you coat/paint an older wood deck, the coating will crack, let water in, but it can't get back out. It gets trapped against the wood and destroys it. Learned that the hard way.

I guess that's why deck stain is a thing! Better to repel the water than to try to seal it out.

@Krankie_V It doesn't matter what name you call it. It will eventually crack, let water in, and not let it back out. Better to give it a good sanding at year 5, again at year 10 and sand again or replace at year 15. Coatings on a deck floor, are a waste.

@ANew-cs5vy deck stain doesn't crack or peel. It absorbs into the wood. It's not like paint at all. It's a water repellent. Usually tinted so they call it stain.

@@Krankie_V The water based deck stains that mostly populate the shelves don't absorb into the wood at all really. I have an 8x32' deck on the front of my house we "stained" when the house was brand new and touched it up over the years. It just flakes right off after a couple of years and the wood looks just like it did new. It doesn't seem to make any difference if the wood is sanded or not, I have found out. Oil based stains though, that's a different story. Harder to find these days.
