They dont just throw them into an F22 and say 'This is what these buttons do, this is the throttle, have fun'. Is it completely realistic? no, its SIMULATES it. There are still benefits to using sims.

    Just some tips:
As mentioned the big elephant in the room for simulators is lack of force feedback. To mitigate this, as much as one can reasonably expect, DCS attempts to enhance feedback by routing it to the other senses. I suggest using some earbuds or some headphones as you can hear the airflow change as your AOA increases, switches click super loud, etc. As you've probably noticed buffeting shakes the screen since you can't feel it. I also suggest magnifying head movements in the face tracking software if that's an option. With my set up head movements are exaggerated with a bit of smoothing so I can keep my eyes on the monitor.
Hope some of that helps with the transition.

Worked on the VR T-38C trainers that the USAF uses for training and got to try the OFT. The difference in control forces and throttle range of motion were stark compared to desktop setups. Was vastly easier to fly with precision in the OFT and the VR setups with their stronger sticks than on my home setup.

@@JSmith73 Shimshakers are propbably best thing that home-simmer can get to have awareness of G-state.
I am actually waiting that someone would implement a small electricity feed to be given to feel it differently from the wrist or something.
Some people even have a same thing as driving simulators has, the seat belts will have motors to tighten you to seat based G forces.
Nothing serious is required, but having a belt that would gently tighten based G would likely create excellent awareness for G forces.
But I think I would prefer that electroid thing, as it would give a gentle voltage to your arm/abdomen (that is used in various healtcare massage devices etc) that would really let you feel the "discomfort" when pulling high G and understand it far better.

If you're new to DCS the one channel I always recommend is a guy called Bogey Dope. He's a retired crew chief for the F-16. His videos are just so good. Knowing the real jet, like you, gives you such a leg up on the rest of us mere mortals. Simple things like what the aircraft does during the BIT. All the control surfaces move, valves open and close, etc. When DCS revamped the BIT he reviewed it step by step. "that's too long...the flaps move more...the nozzle iris's closed more slowly..." it's fascinating. But when he gives a tutorial, he shows every binding you must have and the easiest way in DCS to mimick the real thing. Well worth a sub. Good luck in your DCS career. It's not the real thing, just the closest you can get.

Maybe you should play with the axis tuning to tune the curves of axis as you like. There is the button "Axis Tune" for that center down of the config window and then the Curvature slide.
Some (real?) pilots claimed that the F-16 in DCS is very wobbly in the feeling and not so responsive (especially for the pitch) ; unless you use an expensive force sensor joystick (like the RealSimulator FSSB R3L force sensing base).
So some players crank up the middle of the axis doing like a S-shape to force the middle to be extra responsive.
For a better simulation, you may want to look at Falcon BMS. It's better in term of simulation for the F-16, but also outside of the F-16 for example for dynamic weathers, clouds affecting lasers and IR missiles, data cartridge, ATC/pattern, solo dynamic campaign packages/missions generated, a smart scaling for far objects to proper see airplanes to compensate the tiny limiting pixels of the screen ....

The AI in DCS tend to avoid high AoA situations unless leading a gun shot. They tend to stay around their best Ps, which makes them very predictable and prone to exploits. It doesn't help that the flight model they are using is often a LOT different then the one the human player is using, so it's fairly easy for them to never lose any energy while turning. The only thing they seem to be somewhat proficient at is jinking, and they would do this until they run out of fuel. As you yourself noticed, they will do absolutely nothing to break a status quo.

Would have thought a high res VRQ headset would make this whole setup so much more intuitive for anyone, but especially an experienced real world pilot. Given all the controls are on the HOTAS, being able to track with your actual head position would be best.

All I ever wanted was to fly but life didn't work out that way so seeing a real viper pilot saying they've done a good job of the sim makes all the effort to learn the systems worth it. I think I'm years away from taking another player on, let alone an actual fighter pilot but I'm loving my time working up to it!!

Hi Hasard. Very cool to watch while you explain what's happening. I was just wondering what kind of head tracking you are using? I use Track IR, but that requires an emitter to be mounted on your head somewhere. I've tried a couple of others but nothing that is strait up just observing your motions. I'll dog fight you if given the chance. I'm not great but I will happily eat the ground and use it as a learning tool. And thank for your service to our amazing country.

The best thing I could recommend for "Immersion" into DCS, is VR. If you can swing the setup costs (good computer and good VR headset), the immersion is second to none. You get a "3D" cockpit and you get depth perception you don't have in 2D. You also get 1:1 tracking of your head movements. The better focused audio also adds to the immersion factor although you can get that with headsets in 2D.
DCS is a great sim. It has its flaws, but overall is pretty solid.

I started flying DCS since day 1 (2008) so i just want to warn you, (as you already know RL is different to Sim) there are real killer pilots out there that will smoke you every time in Sim. Take some time to practice and get used to your rig. Usually takes a couple months at least. Hope you understand where i'm coming from.

Get a buttkicker for your rig. It will let you feel the buffeting as well as other things. I used one for MSFS 2020 but didn't get around to trying it in DCS. We used to fly with a Viper driver back in the falcon BMS days and he taught us how to notch against missiles and some other techniques. It worked pretty well. I also used to be Crew Chief on the F-16 back in the late 80's-90's. I crewed the block 32 all the way to block 52 before I got out. I would love to fly in DCS with you, time permitting.

Hello man! Great respect to you for being a real F-16 pilot. One question to you regarding DCS. How many seconds at 9G did you have to stay in the centrifuge G strain training in order to be able to fly the Falcon? As far as I know, you must be able to withstand 9G constantly for 15 seconds or so. At least from what I could see on youtube regarding F-16 pilots centrifuge trials. Have you ever counted how many seconds it takes for the pilot to black out completely in DCS? I did! 6 seconds or so at 9G. Some smartass well tell you that you must do some high G maneuvers in DCS in order for the pilot to "heat up" or something and be able to hold the G for more seconds before blacking out. Well..., even if you do that the result still shows that our virtual pilot fully blacks out in less than 10 seconds at 9G no matter if he sits in the 33 degrees aft tilted seat like the F-16 has or a more straight seat like other fighters have. It's simply ZERO difference. So that's a simulation issue already cause it makes no difference to that. And another simulation issue is that if you start flying (pilot not heated up for holding G's longer) directly pulling and holding some 7.9Gs (mathematically below 8Gs), although the screen will become almost fully black, the pilot never blacks out and eventually that very rudimentary simulated strengthening of the pilot over time to sustain more Gs will make the screen getting more and more lit up until you will be turning forever at 7.9Gs and never black out.
There is one fighter planes simulator called BMS Falcon which was the pinnacle of correctly simulating the F-16's flight model and flight behavior and performances which truly reflects the G-loc effect very very correct. The G-loc has a well and more correctly defined function of time versus G values that produce a G-loc than the rudimentary one in DCS. At 6Gs you can last X seconds and still get a G-loc. At 7Gs less time and so on with an exponentially decreasing time to G-loc as the G linearly increases. Can you, as a real pilot who passed the G training tests be able to reach and talk to the guys at Eagle Dynamics to solve this problem and make the G loc simulation more correct? Me and many others have tried telling them that the pilot blacks out way too quickly at 9G or never blacks out at 7.9G, but they won't believe us, except if we were real pilots and could provide stronger proof. You could be of a great help for this subject. Greatly appreciate your effort:). Keep it up with nice DCS content as in this video here.

Could you compare falcon BMS(supposedly more accurate then the DCS one) with DCS and which you think is better? Falcon BMS is interesting because its a mod made for falcon 4.0(released in 1998) so the graphics are not very good but everything else is amazing.
