- Our cover verion of the Smith's classic. It was used in John Hughes film, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Was not on any of our three albums but was released as a single in 7 and 12 inch formats.
this song leaves a GIANT hole in my heart
Stop being gay, pls

Ha kane
A GIANT hole that only a GIANT hug can fix? :)
Hits hard
The Smiths' version is done as a plea. This is a prayer. Both versions are excellent. For very different reasons.
I have to say that Dream Academy's lead male vocal is a really thing of surreal beauty ... theirs is by far my personal favourite version of the song. Thanks to The Smiths for writing the song though ...
Perfect and succinct comparison.
@@yally88 I agree. What a great way to compare the two songs.
Robert that spoke to me, thank you.
The Smith• s are grand. MORRISSEY. But this is the greatest cover ever

I bet when you're at a point in your life where it feels like nothing is going right, this song hits different
I've always felt that way for this song. Like an internal plea for something wonderful to happen as a change, something pleasantly surprising, but all seemingly to no avail.
Yes,thats how i feel.Miserable in all areas of my life
Many many times
Without a doubt.
Let me get what I want.....
I love The Smiths, but this version is exquisite
Totally agree with you.
It’s Nick’s voice- it’s so pretty compared to Morrissey’s. And the oboe is a nice addition.
There's no emotion in his voice like there is in Morrissey's. This version is way inferior to the original
@@jrb1802uk
Your emotional range is terribly limited if you're not in love with Dream Academy's vocals and arrangement ... I have idea how limited some people's emotional response can be until I saw your comment ....
@@jrb1802uk I wouldn't say "way" inferior, but you're absolutely right about the emotion.
When I listen to the Smiths original, I feel like Morrissey lived it. Nick didn't. That's the difference.
I missed this one when it came out originally. So, Kane Pixels brought me here. That's right, a 17 year old filmmaker introduced a GenX old man to a song from his own youth. That speaks to the timelessness of this song.
This song (especially the instrumental) makes me feel both happy and sad. So many emotions.
Indeed
Rajith Maligaspe Dream Academy deserves more credit. Check out Power to Believe instrumental. Anyone who knows planes trains and automobiles will shed a tear after hearing it

Depressing yet hopeful
The song which make you realize that you are not Ferris, but Cameron.

Nowadays I feel more like Rooney.
There’s a bit of everyone in that movie in each and every one of us even those who get hurt easily really need to stop slow down live life as it should be and not as they want it to be and take it easy sometimes
That scene is perfection.
I’m bringing a pair of earbuds next time I go to an art museum and I’m just gonna stare at a painting intensely while listening to this song.

Yes!! So underrated and not just a one-hit wonder!!
this is a smiths song...
@@noverrr4508 no shit sherliock
@@noverrr4508 Literally OVER half of everything that comes out today is either based on or a straight up carbon copy of something older and that includes films, scripts, and even some writing/books/literature. However what DA did here is not the same as that. Today there is a filter muffling creativity because too many low-awareness ppl who feel entitled to a life they aren't willing to bleed for. I'm glad though for there is LITTLE competition.
Thankfully they finally have released a box set of most of the music from Hughes classic 80's films! "Life Moves Pretty Fast: The John Hughes Mixtape Collection"! Shit, I hope I got the title correct!!! It's somethin' like that and it's still pretty available.
Insanely good interpretation of the Smiths song, breathed a whole new life in to the morrisey version, quite outstanding and how a cover should be done, not a straight copy of the original instead a beautifully atmospheric version with room to breathe.
Paul Ockenden absolute bang on fella, couldn’t agree more
Ive just heard this for the 1st time and I thought it was the Smiths not knowing they recorded it first..

Good times for a change
Seems the luck I’ve had
Can make a good man turn bad
So please, please, please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
This time
Haven’t had a dream in a long time
Seems the love I’ve had
Can made a good man bad
So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows it would be the first time
Lord knows it would be the first time
Haven’t had a dream in a long time
Seems the love I’ve had
Can make a good man bad
So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows it would be the first time

When you feel bad for a giant demonic puppet.
Everyone describes this song as melancholic and sad, but it's always been more comforting than anything IMO. It emits that 80's innocence.
This makes me cry. It's just wonderful, especially the oboe part.
I was in the orchestra in jr. high and a guy played one. Never heard of one pryor to that !
That's oboes for ya. Try "Gabriel's Oboe" - Ennio Morricone. That is poignant.

I have loved this song ever since Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I am amazed by John Hughes' taste in music and how he combined it into his films. RIP Mr. Hughes, you gave a generation an amazing soundtrack.
Not just an amazing soundtrack - but some awesome movies as well - despite the fact that some things haven't supposedly "aged" well 🤦♀️ those divisions due to racism, prejudice and bigotry STILL exist in high school, and society.
Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink, not to mention B.Club. ❤️❤️❤️
who come here after seeing kane pixels video?
i did. And i was shocked when i see the Valley View Center being demolished
Who else getting to know this banger after watching Kane Pixel's Eldest view?
Not a big fan of covers, but this is tremendous. I had a huge crush on Kate St. John in the 80's!
Gilbert is playing an E-mu Emulator II synthesizer. That's the same one Ferris Bueller had.
+koepu THANK YOU!
Awesome, cheers
Stop. I already learned something new today. Didn't know this wasn't the original. Now this!? 😳
Yes Ferris is moaning about not having a car - but that Synth new would have been around $2000 + ! Ermm 😂
Yes - the studio set decorators knew that so they had it written into the script that Ferris would use this for a fake cough but it wouldn't have that capacity to do so at the time. I played one two, or three years after the movie was made that cost $35,00.00 then which would be about $95,00.00 in todays money and it didn't do that either - this was a trick on people watching as it was recorded and then parts of someone coughing slowed down and other parts sped up and played back to simulate what they thought it would sound like through and actual synthesizer. And to my knowledge none of them do that to this day as there is no want, or desire for it in music! You can put a mic on a synth and run through it but that's about as close as you're going to get to an actual cough!
Here because Kane Pixels

I came from Kane Pixels, but this song sounds good tbh
I walked down the aisle at my wedding to this version of the song. I had our piano player then play it at our cocktail hour. And our first dance was to this song redone by the Deftones since this is my favorite song, and Deftones is his favorite band. And of course the original as a slow song for the second last song.. 4 times in total at my wedding, and no one noticed except 3 people...

Don't get me wrong I'm a massive fan of The Smiths but I personally think this is an instance where the cover is better than the original.
I just like how this version sounds a little more hopeful as opposed to out right depressing if that makes sens? Oh and plus it has Kate St John!

Always fun to hear different artists interpret a song, and this one's a beauty. Nick's vocal understates the lyric well, and seeing the lovely Kate St. John is worth the price of admission.

The good news is that you are about to discover the genius of The Smiths
The late, great John Hughes, gifted us by introducing somewhat obscure musical bands to us that became so iconic as though they were themselves characters in his films. Dream Academy is just one example of an insanely great band that he featured.
Yes, this song was on the Ferris Bueller museum scene.
@@a4000t I couldn't place it, but thinking through the movie, the museum scene was the only place this song would have worked.
