Kind of an underrated band. They took a really different musical direction from the start where they combined great musicianship, orchestral instrumentation, synths, and bold choices that are all worthy of rediscovering. Truly ahead of their time , by decades.
JJ Jackson was the best interviewer of all the MTV VJs (see his interview with PiL's John Lydon and Keith Levene as well - amazing!). I love that Nick references Love's "Forever Changes" as a big influence to merge Classical into their music - one of my Top 10 favorite albums of all-time. Kate was in a band called The Ravishing Beauties with the ethereally beautiful pianist/vocalist Virginia Astley. Nick and Gilbert's only album when they were The Act was also very Poptastic. So much talent in this interview!
Three intellegent, gifted and classy people. A lovely insight into these clever musicians. Kate is truly a fine specimen of beauty and charm. Sexy? Hell yes...and she exudes that without lowering her standards or physique concealing overcoat.
You cannot get these types of deep interviews with musicians nowadays in MTV. Heck, not even music, for that matter. Thankfully, there's a show I'been watching, its called "Guitar Center Sessions" sponsored by the Guitar Center stores, and its really good.
Love Life in a Northern Town recently discovered Indian Summer now my favourite a beautiful song that makes me relax and imagine I'm in another place and time
Beautiful music and great ideas and attitudes from these three! I think the world is enriched by these three talented musicians! What a great time to be alive back then!
I remember buying their first album on vinyl at the local record shop. I was already in love with Nick Laird-Clowes' voice, then I saw his boyish face and fell in love even more. Later, the song "Hampstead Girl" sealed the deal for me. Great memories!
Check out their new comprehensive box set that was just released, called "Religion, Revolution, and Railways." The unreleased song, "House of Heartbreak", is quite an amazing 8-minute epic journey. This truly deserves a wider release. It has echos of their first album. Love Kate's backing vocals and the whole ambiance of this.
Love Love,Love the OBOE and I hope more musicians incorporate Real(not synthesized) classical instruments in Music. It's been over 20 years since I first heard this while living in Dallas ,TX 1985.its ABSOLUTELY precious being able to listen in 2021.❣️
I bought their album on cassette tape from a shop when I was living in Southern Spain in 1986 and after scouring the earth for years I finally found the CD from some obscure seller on line about five years ago. Wonderful wonderful wonderful 80s nostalgia - such talent.
I feel sooooo sentimental now. I'm 37 and miss MTV when it was how it was meant to be. I never saw this interview until now, -I am sad that they only had one solid hit because they seem(ed) so potent and sprite and "in it" so to speak. Very real (and quite innovative) musicians, indeed!!!
...(cont.) to mid '80s, bands like R.E.M., the Police and U2 and 10,000 Maniacs were all at their dizzyingly creative peaks, creating sounds that had never been heard before, while bands like the Dream Academy, Lone Justice and Suzanne Vega were all shaking things up creatively, and all coming out with beautiful things. So whether or not the sounds were similar, I think the '80s were the most creative musical period since the '60s.
Check out her website too, she is still extremely beautiful now I remember Life in a Northern Town from my teens, my favourite track of the 80's I think.......
Some of their music was quite familiar to me from old 80s movies, but I just now am getting in to their music and I had no idea who they were until tonight. Great English band. I love them so.
1985: a unique sound; "Life in a Northern Town" holds up incredibly well 30 years on, and then there's Kate St. John. Absolutely lovely and a keeper of the first order.
This was my childhood:-) Thank you for uploading this vintage MTV clip, when MTV WAS AT ITS CLIMAX!!! What a classy group of Musicians the Dream Academy are. Kate is HELLA FINE, SO SWEET:-) JJ Jackson was a talented man, please RIP.
thanks for posting this video. I have always liked this song, so to see a interview with the band "back in the day" warmed this eighties childs heart. Hmmm...prefab sprout? I think I found a another obsure eighties band to check out!
Why has it since become so 'uncool' to do intelligent interviews like this one? You would never see anything like this with today's bands. Why has the modern world become so dumbed down?
because today's musicians aren't necessarily artists, they're "faces" with a production team behind them. i'm talking pop music. the underground is filled with genius artists who can communicate. also Dream Academy members received good educations too i'm sure.
@@earinsound I see many artists out there who do great things I think it's what people tend to do... they say "things were better back then" Ummm.... nope. The Knife, MGMT, BIllie Eilish, Neon Indian - just a few names of artists who have huge followings and do things there own way... and there are many others. Maybe for the top top artists... but even then, I couldn't say unless i took a look and really researched to find out which ones write their own material and which ones dont Plus, there have been record company - created bands since the dawn of time.... and there have also been many bands who succeeded who have control over their material... maybe even moreso now
Had a crush on Kate ;) Truly enjoyed every minute of this interview... very rich. They really relished on new concepts and proved themselves successful. Not too many artists like them nowadays. Thanks loads for sharing :)
Interesting seeing this video today. I grew up in the 80's, but I didn't know who Nick Drake was back then (although I love his music now). The other thing I notice: J.J. Jackson is asking very intelligent questions, and the band is obviously very intelligent too. Ahhhh..... Back before MTV sucked.
Turned 39 last week, boy does this send me right back. Never saw the interview before, but a) boy did I love the Dream Academy, and b) wow I forgot how great MTV was back in the day. Remember I want my MTV? Without commercials? And playing Michael Jackson (not technically rock) was a big deal? And JJ Jackson... this makes me really really nostalgic. I miss this time. It seemed so cutting-edge then, and now... their color-coordinated nehru jackets... so young and optimistic... it gets to me
Sadly Nick Drake took his own life at 26 years old on the 25th Nov 1974. His song "River Man" was the second listed song from his debut 1969 album "Five Leaves Left". In 2004 the song was remastered and released as a 7" vinyl and as enhanced CD single including a video to the song by Tim Pope.
yeah I'm a Canadian living in Asia. I'm same age as you guys too. When I hear this song I feel really Canadian even though they're Brits lol Reminds me of making our home made 1/2 pipes and skateboarding and BMXing when we were kids. Coming home after work in the hot summers and eating our watermelon we soaked overnight with Vodka. Good innocent times. Will never be able to go back :(
Aside from the question of whether their music "sounded like" the music of the '60s, is the creativity factor. The greatest thing about the '60s (IMO) was the unlimited creativity of the greatest '60s bands (whether the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, the Byrds, The Dead, the Zombies, folk acts like Dylan, Baez and Tim Hardin, etc.). The Dream Academy did a cover of this song by The Korgis and although i often prefer the original version of a song i really love the version of the Dream Academy in this case
This is an awesome interview. And I agreed I, wish they would get back together. They were so good. To bad they split up. And yes she was one good looking women.
It was September 1985, I remember school had just started. I was in a record shop in the mall and the clerk put the Dream Academy record on; I bought it right there! Yes, Kate St. John is sweetly beautiful, not in the oversexed trashy way women in pop music often look. She also had the most interesting career working in the '90s with Roger Eno and Bill Nelson; she also had a solo album on All Saints.
Great interview....thanks for posting it up. Kate does look beautiful and when I briefly met her in London three years ago she hadn't changed at all from this interview. Do check out her solo albums which are far superior to the DA albums.

Kate St. John is simply so beautiful
Would you let her fart on your meals?
Man that was a group
that girl is so pretty... and an english accent to boot.... i think i'm in love
Kate St. John is absolutely gorgeous!!!
Back off! That’s my future wife!
I realize she’s closing in on 70 and I’m 41, but dammit don’t kill my dream! 😂
Hey hey, BABY!! Come heeeeerrrrrreeeee, girl!!
Actually, they're all gorgeous!
David Gilmour produced their debut LP and did a brilliant job!
He also gave Kate Bush her start. The man’s a genius
He also produced and played guitar on their 3rd album, Different Kind Of Weather.
Man, I wish the dream academy would get back together, if only to do a tour. That way, I could see them live.
Good lord she's gorgeous.
wrong - she's beyond gorgeous
Kate St. John is gorgeous and beautiful! I've had a crush on her for years!
Kate St. John's not bad either...

Inteligent as their music without being stuffy and arrogant. You have to respect that!

The days before stupid obnoxious tattoos and nose rings. When our 80's girls had class.

Quality people, musicians and some brilliant material. Thanks for providing the sound track for my Love Parade of the 80s!

One of the best debut albums ever
It's so WONDERFUL LISTENING TO INTERVIEWS of/WITH people who produce the music we all LOVE❣️
Heard them for the first time waaay back in 1985. Loved them from first listen. Way under rated group.

Yes, a great song and Kate is still a babe today.

articulate trio - The Love Parade is one of my favorite numbers - a little bit of a 'Me and Mrs. Jones' theme with an '80s sound
thanks for posting this video. I have always liked this song, so to see a interview with the band "back in the day" warmed this eighties childs heart.

This is really great! Thanks. So sad they're not still together and doubly sad we lost J.J. so early.
I've always wondered who these people were. From the 80s this is a treat! Thank You!
Love Parade is one of my all time favorite songs. Unquestionably beautiful along with LIANT. Their debut album(which I still have) is a must...❤
I consider Love Parade to be a better song than LIANT.

JJ Jackson was so cool!
OMG love Kate. So gorgeous.
I love his accent and he is so cute.
they are so young here. Nick looks great with the long hair.
Interesting guy. He seems very charismatic while being polite and not overbearing.
"We are trying to be very much of the 80s" aaawwww that sounds so cute now!!!
Kate St John😍

My top-5 favorite album. I got to see Love and meet Arthur Lee
@@teodelfuego I saw them several times too but could only imagine what meeting Arthur would have been like.
Their self titled album is one of my favorites of all time.
Your music Is excellent.
Love these guys
They all seem like really down to Earth people. I like their music.
Kate is absolutely beautiful!

Mad props to Nick for even knowing Pearls Before Swine. Now I love Dream Academy even more.

Fantastic interview by both the band and JJ. Amazing band references which Weller and N Gallagher throw around nowadays.

Awsome... will somebody please post the song "everybody´s gotta learn sometime" with this great band.
oh! if only ...... meanwhile they are our little secret - thanks for post

Kate St. John mmmmmmmmmmm
R I p jj Jackson
nick is a hottie and still is in my opinion. trashmonk ftw!

JJ did a great job here. MTV still sucks. Northern Town....was my favorite tune of 1985 easily.
Funny Prefab being mentioned, i find those bands very similiar in all due respects, one of my top 10 of the 80s' along talk talk and kate bush.
I'm with you. If I met her I bet all I could do is mumble.
Kate is the most gorgeous girl I’ve ever seen.
what are they up to now?

@330R make that the last decade or two of MTV.
