  • We had quite the search process in trying to find a paint that was going to work for us and our application on our boat, but we were able to find the perfect product and finally get the deck welded back on as well!

Phosphoric acid, sometimes marketed as "RustKill" converts iron-oxide to iron-phosphate, which after a brush down/light sanding and rinse with water leaves you with a good surface for painting.

That’s what we looked for initially, but it turns out you can’t buy it in Canada as a regular citizen without it being mixed with other products, which is why we ended up with the spray we did from cloverdale. We tried a couple of other phosphoric acid products but they left a chalky surface and we couldn’t get proper info on what to do with them for paint application.

Who would think that the simple task of painting becomes a science experiment. All the hoops to jump through, government, mixing, prep, application and the list goes on. Just mix it with some asbestos and lead like they did 50 years ago....nobody lives forever! 🤣🤣

Right?! Nothing can be as simple as it seems on a boat 😂😂 thanks for watching!

I used PPG DIMETCOTE 302H zinc primer on my anchor locker followed by 2 coats of 235 bar rust 2 part epoxy primer and then 2 coats of PSX 700. Not sure if you have access to PPG products where your at, but they make great industrial marine paint. I use their product all over my vessel. The primer coat should be an inorganic zinc based primer if going to bare cleaned metal as it is the most important. There's a video on youtube about Dimetcote and how it was tested and proven. I've been using it for years upon years on both my commercial fishing vessel and my Roberts sailboat. Pretty work on the welding. It's a lot more to it than you can show in a video and I'm sure there was some expletives yelled out at some point, but you've done a great job.

Thanks for the info! This stuff is pretty similar to the PPG system and is what the commercial boats around here use so I think it will work out well. It is also a lot easier for us to get our hands on than PPG. Might be useful for the future though!
