    Can I change only the shift knob ? That’s the only part I like

  • @1969Bossman429

    I just purchased a 2013 JX35 and I hate the cup holder with the lid on it so I had been looking at upgrading to a QX60 style shifter cover with the open style cupholders which led me to your video. I went to the local salvage yard this morning and pulled not only the shifter cover/cup holder, but also the shifter assembly which was very easy to do, so I am hoping by using the newer shifter it will be plug and play all lights will work PLUS the shift knob will definitely clip back into place by using the matching shifter. I will update you as soon as I get it installed. I will probably have to go back and get the matching wood trim pieces to match the piece I am replacing.

      Sounds great. I like the one without the lid too, but at the time, they were near impossible to get, and I really wanted the newer shifter. Awesome that you got it at a salvage yard...best way to get it. Keep me posted on how it goes for sure.

    Ok thx I just fixed my console top as the wood grain was cracked and I got lucky to find a new complete top from a clear out seller on eBay so I updated the handle at the same time, I’m ok with it but the wife may struggle with it

    Where can I buy this shifter

  • @1969Bossman429

    Update is done but I can't add pictures. I ended up keeping the original shift knob and only had to pull off the plastic clip that is glued in the leather boot and replace it with the chrome trim from the old boot which is held in place with a zip tie. Changing out the entire shifter to use the newer style knob and knob clip was not possible because you lose the ability to manually shift. Would like to send pics if possible.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  2 роки тому

      Great news to hear you got it done. Interesting that you wouldn't be able to use the manual shift function. Why is that? I still have the manual shift on mine.
      Sounds like you did some clever modifications to make it work too. Always great to hear things like that.

      Ok, going to send pics to your email. The manual shift option wouldn't work with the complete shifter change out because the wiring on the 2013 model wasn't there to support the 2018 shifter assembly. The 2013 and 2018 shifters are totally different so I kept my 2013 shifter as well as the 2013 knob. I am talking about the complete shifter assembly.

      My light no longer works. There is a light, but it does not appear to be a bulb, but a soldered in LED bulb. That is just a guess though, since I did not check it that thoroughly. But I did not see a spot for a bulb, so normally that means the an LED is there

    Great video by the way I have a question what about the center console in the rear for the screens in the back the center console with an HDMI connector from a 2016 qx60 to connect it into jx35 2013 thanks.

      Thanks, appreciate that feedback
      Technically, it can be done, but it is a lot of work, and there is a lot of cost involved, as there is a video processor that apparently needs to be replaced. Also, the screens on the newer models are bigger, and I am not sure if the older, smaller screens can connect to the interface unit.

    What was that one wire for? The one for which you didn't have the service manual for. Great mod btw, I'll be adding this to my list!

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  6 років тому

      Thanks! I've had it in for about 8 months, and it has been awesome! I would recommend it for sure.
      Near as I can tell, the wire is only for lighting. I cant get any info from Infiniti direct, and I have since obtained a service manual for the car, but it does not specify in the manual what the wiring harness actually does. For the record, everything seems to be working. Car shifts no problem, I can even use manual mode, the cluster responds correctly when I shift, all reverse lights work....everything seems to be working without issue. The only thing I would note otherwise is on extremely hot days (over 30 degrees celsius/86 degrees Fahrenheit) the clip that holds the new shifter in place becomes a bit loose, probably from heat expanding the clip. So with that, if I pulled up on the shifter, it could come off, whereas in winter now, or anything under 30/86, it holds firm. It isnt an issue for me, since I do not pull up when resting my hand on the shifter, but it could be an issue for some. I think cutting notches I mentioned would fix that, but it would be up to you. Other than that, it has been one of my favorite mods.

      @@NexusAuto sounds good. I definitely have this on my list ...where did you source the qx60 trim from? If you could link that to me that'd be appreciated. Also, if the harness is lighting oriented I wonder if it's cup holder lights or something

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  6 років тому +1

      @@bikgarcha3061 I actually go he QX60 trim online...ebay of all places lol. I spent a lot of time looking for it. It took about 3 months to locate one in good condition (this one was actually brand new). You can buy them at the dealership, but they are pricey. I checked junkyard, 3rd party/aftermarket, online, etc. And finally stumbled on it online. I think the lights may have to do with the shifter itself. I am not sure, but the harness plugs in directly near the shifter. But since disconnecting it, no errors appeared, and nothing stopped functioning, so whatever it does, it does not seem to be a necessary operation for the vehicle.

      Hi Jeff. To answer both your questions,
      1. Since doing this in 2018, I have not looked to see if these are available anywhere else. At the time, I could only get it on Ebay, and it was rare. I searched for a couple of months before it came up from a seller. 2 yrs later, it may be easier to find, I am not sure. But that was the situation 2 yrs ago. Also, I have to buy the shift console and shifter separately.
      2 . What rubber are you talking about? Can you provide a timestamp in my video so I can see what you are talking about?

    i did that install already but you didn't have to change the whole console just the shift knob it works and locks in just grind some the plastic off of the new shift knob with hand grinder and then cut two new grooves into the shifter so it can lock in place i did it from my jx35 and my q70 l👀ks so much better

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 років тому +1

      No, you don't have to, that's true. But the shifter boot is different on both. So if you don't, they don't match. For me, it didn't look right, so that's why I sourced out the console. But just because that is how I felt, doesn't mean everyone has to do that. But I would rather make a video that shows changing both, and it is up to the viewer to see if they want to change the console, vs just showing the shifter knob. Plus, I like the look of the console anyways ..much sleeker vs the original grey stock one. I completely agree...what a difference. Looks so much better! One of my favorite upgrades

    Thank you for this video - I ordered a set (console and shift knob) from ebay from a 2017. I would recommend changing the title to JX35 and QX60 as I almost did find this video. I am interested in any wiring update if it comes - I do think this is for the lighting on the console at night to see what gear you're shifting into.
    For the shift knob and the shift lever mismatch. Which is better to fabricate the knob or the shift shaft piece ? I'd like to make the change and not worry about temperatures or it popping off. Anyone have any info on that?

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 років тому

      Awesome! Glad to see the upgrade went well. I love this mod...one of my favorites!
      I will take your recommendation and change the title. Not a bad idea at all!
      I am unsure if I ever will wire it up, as the lack of lights does not bother me, but if I do, I will 100% post the results.
      As for the shift knob and lever mismatch, either are tricky, but I think the shaft is the easier mod. I have thought about it from various angles, and have not done it yet (not sure if I ever will as it has not been a bother for me, but it is possible) and to me, if you line up the shift knob, and get something flat to stick in the little opening where the little holddown clip goes, you can mark the shift shaft exactly where it needs to be notched. Then just get a dremel tool and cut some small notches in it. It would allow the hold down clip to fit in the notches and hold it in place. If I decide to do it and film a video, this is the exact procedure I would use.
      Thanks again for watching and for the great comment! Really appreciate watching and all the support

      Unfortunately, from what I saw, it cannot without a fair bit of modification. The shift boot is different vs the original one, and is simply not replaceable. I think it may be possible with some work, but it just can't be 'swapped'
