  • Welcome to the third episode of Engines of Union Pacific. Today we talk about the GP35 and DD35 locomotives. Remember this series is inspired by engines of Septa by Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions and engines of Amtrak by AmtrakGuy365. Anyways, I hope you enjoy.
    Warning, there may be some black screen errors here and there because this video was uploaded right off my editing software and so it made a few mistakes here and there but try to look beyond that.
    Enjoy!

    To anyone that is reading this comment, this episode is now going to be considered outdated due to the bad information being given. A remastered version is planned to be made in the future. After the remastered version is released this, this episode will still be up on my channel but will be marked as Outdated.

    Nice video, very informative. I've watched 3 episodes so far, but one thing I do suggest is practice speaking before uploading. The hesitation throws me off personally, I don't know about anyone else. Not trying to say this to be mean, but I'm saying this as constructive criticism. like I said, it's still a good video!

    It should be noted that the UP also had 10 SD-35 (special duty) locomotives with 2 C-C 3 axle trucks installed. The 567 engines that were installed in the GP/SD-35's were at their mechanical limit at 2500 Hp. It's successor, the 645 engine, had larger diameter cylinders (9-1/4") than the 567 (8-1/2") allowing it to be made with higher horsepower ratings. These went into the DD-40AX Centennials in pairs giving the engine 6600 horsepower total for both engines. the GP/SD-40's used this engine at 3000Hp and was a huge success for EMD.

    Took me quite some time to recognize the differences between GP38s, GP40's, etc, with the GP35.
    The GP 30 and GP35 were shorter by three feet, than the later Geeps. Also, the middle roof fan is of a lower profile than the other two.
    From what I read, the GP35 was a highly regarded unit. Twenty five hundred horsepower was awesome for it's time. General Electric had built a good unit in the U25B, and EMD needed something to match it. They felt the '"35" was a better match, horsepower-wise, than the GP30.

Neat to see it in your vid, but shocked to see it. BTW, that engine many of of modelers consider a DD35, but its really an old Athearn Blue box engine they title DD40, it was made from early plans EMD had that never came to be.

    The 35 series EMD's were the last of the 567 motor design, DC direct current drive, which dated from the 1930's. In the mid 60's the 645 motor coupled with an AC alternator proved to be a winner, the 38 and 40 series! By the 90's the 710 motor came out and differs not much from its predecessors.

    Man, I wish UP was smart to preserve the DD35 and DD35a. It would've allowed more models to be made and more memories to be made, standing alongside one in some park would be enough to satisfy me. I'm a really big fan of these giants, but I wish they had preserved at least 1 in heritage service or at Cheyenne Wyoming in the roundhouse next to the DD40.

    Tractive Effort, a measure of pulling ability, is measured in "pounds force" (lbsf), not in "pounds per square inch", which is a measure of pressure. It is a combination of locomotive weight and wheel/rail friction coefficient and the max power rating of the axle motors.

  • @Perfusionist01
    @Perfusionist01 4 роки тому

    Just found this channel - not bad. I would mention that the correct title should be "LOCOMOTIVES of the Union Pacific" - the "engine" is that diesel prime mover under the long hood that drives the generator. The GP35 was pushed up to 2500hp to match the early 1960s offerings from General Electric and Alco (still a player then). The prime mover and the electrical system were pushed up to their limits so GP35s sometimes had maintenance issues. Most GP35s that survive in service today are often rebuilt with later components. UP didn't see the need to spend a lot of money rebuilding an "old" locomotive and after the MoPac merger brought in a large fleet of newer B-B locomotives the GP35s were sent to scrap. The DD units were odd monsters and railroading changed during their service lives. Pool power and run through trains became common and the DD units were just too big and odd so other railroads didn't want them in shared service. The big guys were limited to service on UP only. DD35 was intended to only be a booster unit with the DD35 placed between two GP35s, the set giving the effective traction of FOUR GP35s. By the way, UP bought the four-unit demenstrator set from GM (shown in orange and white in some of your slides). UP 762 was at the top of the roster but was actually the FIRST GP35, along with UP 763.

    • @Perfusionist01
      @Perfusionist01 4 роки тому

      By the way, the problems with GP35 reliability is one reason that UP shied away from buying the GP40 for its own use. The SD40 type ended up being the genesis of UP's modern locomotives.

    We do NOT shunt here in America! Shunting means to slam a car to move it into a spot and let the buffers or another car stop it. We switch cars. Switching is to spot a car at a location uncouple and set the hand brake (if needed). In a hump yard, the cars are went over a hump, down the hill, retarders slow the cars as the enter the selected tracks. The cars slow just enough to come to a gentle stop or couple to another car. this is not shunting.

    Does anyone know why UP stopped ordering their diesels with silver painted trucks decades ago?

    • @ottomatic6432
      @ottomatic6432  4 роки тому +1

      Maybe because it didn't seem to fit the scheme or maybe it was light blinding for some may be because it kept coming off since silver paint doesn't stay on for that long and has to be reapplied a lot. To be honest, I don't really know. Maybe ask Union Pacific themselves.

    • @johannmckraken9399
      @johannmckraken9399 3 роки тому

      Greg T. Silver paint is expensive and does not wear well. The Harbor Mist Grey is already on the top of the locomotive so it works well for the trucks and fuel tanks plus it’s more durable.

    why not do one on the UP-Series Steam Locomotive AKA UP 9000s since they were the big boy before the 4000s were a sketch on the drawing board also people seem to believe the 9000 was 100%, trash which it was not a fail. it became the test locomotive and platform for many things like Rotary blowers and other equipment that was either never used again, forgotten about or overlooked just because it is a 4-12-2 that normally went 50 doing nearly the same work as a singular big boy if not more at times due to it is built in 1926-1930s(I know I ramble on but UA-camrs attack it because of its one major flaw although it never gave it any problems when it steamed here to California alone with some freight without problems in 1956).

      How do I tell what the tractive effort is?

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 4 роки тому

      OttoMatic Tractive effort is usually referred to in pounds of force. Different from pressure in pounds of pressure per square inch, which is why psi is wrong. For example, the UP Big Boy produces 131,000 pounds of tractive effort, but not 131,000 psi.

    • @sycamorevalleyshops2841
      @sycamorevalleyshops2841 4 роки тому
