Great video... being in the UK we get a bit detached from what is happening race wise in the States but I was out in Florida when this happened... even back home I was reading daily what the latest news was... such a fighter... God Bless Barbaro.
Barbaro was a champ, now doubt about it, he ran from the heart, i recon they could have saved him and cured him from the laminitis, but they wanted him to nto feel anymore pain, i understand but i think they should have not put him down, he was loved by people all over, he inspired people, and to take that away form people... i was at that race.. i saw him.. and i still cry about it, maybe gone but never forgotten Love you Barbaro RIP
Lovely. I agree, horses shouldn't be raced till later when they're fully grown or around 3 or 4. Nothing was done wrong from The Jacksons, M. Matz, or Edgar Prado. Barbaro took a bad step and shattered the bones. Officails spent weeks to months trying to find the reason for it but nothing could be found. No one was at fault; things like this happens and sadly, sometimes it can't be fixed. RIP Barbaro. May your three brothers carry on your legacy.
@MidnightContender101 I think that would be just ridiculous. Horse racing is a beautiful sport, not because of the gambling, or the alcohol, but look at what these absolutely incredible animals can do. I mean, their strides, their muscles, just gorgeous. These horses live and breathe to run, running is their absolute life, many Thoroughbreds would be depressed and, in a sense, purposeless if they didn't have racing.
A devestating video. Well done. As for putting him down on the track, I agree, in hindsight it would have been kinder perhaps, but the thing is, he tried hard to live, and we wanted so badly for him to live. However, there aren't too many sports stories crueler than a crippled racehorse, and his leg was a mess. Race horses often pay a terrible price for our love of their love of running.
i do track and field lol, I mis read your comment at first i thought you where saying racing and track and field should be banned! I was like WHAT NOO!
It's not that racing needs ended, it needs reformed. The reason so many break down is because they're raced at ages when their bones are still forming and their bodies are still maturing. A mature horse could probably take this strain much better, and the break downs would decrease. But then it'd take the owners too long to make money off of them wouldn't it? Racing horses at top speed at an age when most people wouldn't even consider riding them. That's what kills them.
@MidnightContender101 this didnt happen because he was racing, it could have happened at any time in any horse related sport. the jockey did so well to pull him up quickly, the injury could have been a lot worse if barbaro had kept running. please stop blaming racing.
Barbaro died from Laminitis, a killer of great horses, it killed Secretariat and many others. We need to find a cure to this disease, please donate to the Barbaro Fund For Laminitis at Penn State. Horses are born to run, they will run even if they are not in hand. The lower end of racing sucks and should be overhauled, but it is the duty of all who have acheived success to improve the lower end and make life better for the racehorse. The Jacksons do this.
I believe the one thing good to come out of this incident was that they didn't have to put him down right then and there like they did Eight Belles at the Derby. Watching a horse being put down is one of the most awful sights to see.
@speckled5 Sure, there are many tragedies in the sport, but what sport doesn't? The real problem is the way they're breeding these horses, I mean, look at the horses from the 70's, they were very lean and muscular, the horses today have very small muscles. It's very sad, but it happens, banning it is not the answer. Racing organizations are doing all they can to ensure the safety of these horses and steps are being taken to a better racing society.
Race horses die so young secratariats life was normal that i know of and ruffians life ended so soon and when she shatterd her leg that was soooooooooo sad.
@carlykaiser Strongly disagree. I'm an active member in the equestrian community. Horse racing is by far the most dangerous of all equestrian sports and is the only one considered an "industry." Why is that? Because the entire thing is more revolved around the business of making money than working with an animal. Horse racing needs serious reforms, if not total abolition. It works against their bodies. You don't see stadium jumpers and dressage horses snapping one of two legs.
One of the saddest stories along with Go For Wand and 8 bells that racing has ever known....
Great video and a fitting tribute...

Great tribute, made me cry despite the fact I saw him break down at the 2006 Preakness

I cried all that day when it happened. I wear black every January 26.
Why do racing horses have more breakdowns than wild horses??
Is it because of interbreeding??
..... why track and field?
r.i.p barbaro

Then so should every sport which involves any animal.

At 2:06 I got scared cause he broke his back leg and I miss you Barbaro I wish you didn't have to die Rip Barbaro

@MidnightContender101 why don't you bash steeplechasing? far more horses die in it. i rarely see a race that a horse doesn't go down in.
@MrItaliano1900 How is it only "American ignorace" ? People in Europe think the same as well as Austrailia etc....
