  • An original song written for the Summer 2024 Singer/Songwriter Songwriting Challenge, Prompt 2 "Appalled".
    Somethin' Like a Miracle
When you know where you’ve been
    You recognize it when you
    Pass that way again
    When you know every road
    In this crazy town
    And you want to explode
    Just so something happens
    Something you can’t imagine
Something that will change it all
    Something like a miracle
    When your life is stalled
    Can’t get it started
And you can’t get it hauled
    Too tired to be appalled
    They’re looking at me like
    I’m supposed to applaud
    Can something happen?
    Something I can’t imagine
Something that will change it all
    Something like a miracle
    Same scene every year
    Nothing ever changes here
    Nothing changes at all
    That I can recall
    Apathy and alcohol
Are slowing me to a crawl
    I’ve run out of road
    And I’m gonna explode
    Unless something happens
    Something I can’t imagine
Something that will change it all
    Something like a miracle
All of the out of tune singing is me! The perfectionist in me did not want to post this. But, heck, it's live at a lake cabin.
I'm joined by my brother Kurt Koppelman, niece Claire McManus, my son Myles and my niece, Kurt's daughter, Nora. My other son Luca did the filming. We filmed it in my sister's cabin. We had fun doing it!
Songwriting-wise, I wrote lyrics for a different song so when I wrote this I wasn't thinking about the prompt. But I liked it better and it was easy to work in. Sarah improved one line for me when I bounced it off her and gave me other ideas, too. Kurt and Claire helped me develop the bridge, which I wouldn't have written without their prompting. It's the same old chord progression but I've given myself permission not to worry about that forever.
    Thanks for listening.
