  • To live together, to coexist, co-live, conviviality: these terms usually allude to a sense of peaceful and egalitarian relations. However, conflict and hierarchies are hardly ever absent from the coexistence of people or of humans and nature. They are, in a sense, constitutive of them. These interactions unfold between subjects in quite different positions, and they are permeated by inequality in its many forms.
How do conviviality and inequality constitute one another? This question drives the research at Mecila, and there are many answers to it. We focus on the nexus between conviviality and inequality, how it is expressed in history and daily life, and what it can tell us about Latin America and the Caribbean.
