We've answered a lot of questions this week but one we have yet to touch upon is, "Do we WANT aliens to come to Earth?" It's a scary topic.

Aliens be like:
Trololololol. You're trying to contact us but we're all going to ignore you, Stage 0.7 skrubs.
William Tiley we just keep getting the voicemail they blocked our numbers lol
Lol like in CSGO when the bottom frag talks shit
new phone who dis
Humans: beep beep anyone there?
Aliens: ...
Humans: Helllo?
Aliens: . . .
Humans: is anyone there?
Aliens : JUST FUCKING SHUT UP NOW WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU WE HAVE OUR OWN CIVILIZATION TO RUN. YOU WILL KILL YOURSELFS ANYWAY.
"I come in peace. Take me to your leader"
Hernán Cortés to the Aztecs.
+Elivasfq I read it in Sapiens - a brief history of mankind. Right? He was lying right?
In 100-200 years Earth might be a wasteland. Thanks, humanity
Fried Keenan humans are the best and worst thing to happen to earth...
Nathan Shiels Humans = The entire point and purpose of earth.
We need more nuclear power plants on fault lines.
Johns Films no your wrong. the purpose of our planet is to produce life not just humans. it makes no difference to the planet what so ever what form that life takes. the planet will still be here long after humans have died off. it may end up being an irradiated wasteland for awhile or possibly with a chunk or two missing. but the planet will still be here. and what makes me think it doesnt matter what form the life on the planet takes? well you kinda just have to look outside for that. there are countless different species of animal and plant. all of it life. the grass in your front yard is living and will die. we are still discovering new species of flora and fauna. the human timeline is NOTHING compared to the timeline of life giving this planet has done.
KagaiYami This isn't a rebuttal to my point, so shall I respond? ...The planet was made for human beings.
Actually, I've always believed that, far from us having much to fear from an alien species, that it is they who have far more to fear from us. We are an aggressive, expansionist, warlike, predatory species, a nature that I don't see changing anytime soon. If we turn out to be the most advanced species in our local galactic neighborhood, it could be that human beings, travelling across the cosmos in our Dreadnought-Class starships _(armed with weapons which could scour a planet clean of it's indigenous inhabitants, escorting a convoy of colony ships filled with millions of settlers)_ might well become the nightmare of various alien species across our galaxy.
All of those movies about aliens coming to conquer us...those are simply harbingers of what we might well become.
And any alien race seeing us might belive so too, blowing us up before we become an issue to other planets!
Metholus Caedes It's possible that an advanced alien species with it's eye on us may regard us as a possible long-term threat. However, I believe that, if such were the case, they would have struck long before now, if that was their intent. They may be content to simply monitor us, for now, calculating that, if we cling to our barbarous inclination to conquer and dominate, we will succeed in destroying ourselves, long before we pose any threat to them (always assuming we ever posed a threat to them, which is unlikely) and therefore eliminating the need for them to intervene, militarily. Also, if securing resources were their aim, it's been pointed out by most astrophysicists that any resourced which can be obtained here, can be far more cheaply obtained by strip-mining the Oort Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, and the Asteroid Belt, as well as the dozens of Outer Solar System moons orbiting Jupiter and Saturn...Perhaps even harvesting gases from the atmospheres of the Gas Giants, themselves. Or, if they didn't want to bother with a star system that had a planet inhabited by an "intelligent" species, they may just move onto another system, with nothing but resources for the taking, and nobody to object.
However, if it is the case that we find ourselves to be the most technologically sophisticated species in our local stellar group, with nothing but either Neanderthal or Cro-Magnon hunter-gatherer tribes, or pre-Industrial societies making up the populations of intelligent species on these planets, I hope that we will have evolved enough to approach them in a spirit of friendship and tolerance, benevolently shepherding them through the treacherous waters of societal, cultural, and technological evolution...Waters which we, ourselves are navigating right now (and with no such sagacious overseer to aid us, I might add). It is my hope that our descendants of the next several thousand years will create an interstellar civilization, spanning hundreds or even thousands of light-years, armed with the wisdom to help other species which possess the potential to join us in a coalition of peaceful, enlightened, self-determining societies, working together
towards a bright future of cooperation and exploration, yet also capable of defending ourselves and our friends against an aggressive, territorial, expansionist race...should we ever encounter any such races.
It's 2020 human's will be the cost of there own extinction
I've never understood why we only look for humanoid creatures. Who says that aliens need water and oxygen to survive. Who says they're not gas or liquid?
Or what about life that has the intelligence equivalent to a cow or a mouse? I think that is way more likely to find than an humanoid creature.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) So far we only know of a pretty limited number of chemical combinations that allow for life, so that is what we look for.
It's because humans are narcissistic and think that we are the only intelligent life form on earth. I have a feeling that if there are aliens they would look like nothing on earth.
Chris Shook Lovecraft was right all along. Way ahead of his time
if aliens invade I hope we have a master chief.
I am the master chief
Jack of All Spades aliens are strong but not really but you can kill them with technique guns that will kill them
And if the queen alien is mad she will hit the melted core and kill us all.
Riley Johnson, don't forget Doomguy.
I mean they can also want to make friends. Not every alien species would want to kill us all. We might end up on aliens from shitty anti-alien propaganda number 1335 or the aliens from Ben 10.
Love ya Trace, but these past few podcasts with a guest host have been so much better than usual. Not to say that I don't enjoy just listening to you, but the show seems to work a little better when you have someone to talk with. Just a suggestion, but more of these guests would definitely be a good idea. I mean, you have all those brilliant folk over at Discovery and some amusing folk at SF to work with. Anyway, awesome job with these alien episodes, but you missed the most important question when it comes to aliens:can we have sex with them :P
b1merio we can have sex with them, but they will not have sex with us. so we have to rape them. alien rape. it's not a big deal. humans have better lawyers.
+b1merio yeah definetly, with a guest is so much better because you bounce ideas of each other and debate instead of you just presenting your take :D
everyone on history channel be like: ANCIENT ALIENS! ITS ALL TRUE ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED
Earth, you have 0 friends on Spacebook.
I wonder why people assume that space-faring civilizations will necessarily be high-tech. What if an alien scientist of mediocre knowledge just happened to stumble upon warp technology?
I mean, we have a Type I communication system, but the way we produce food hasn't changed much since the agricultural revolution over 10,000 years ago.
The simple thing is that any civilization capable of reaching us would have to be capable of producing all the resources the require. So they would have absolutely no reason to attack us unless we give them one.
"Looking for a new b**ch planet" @ 2:40 . Haha Interesting
One of the best TestTube Plus videos I think!
Thank you for making this new show, Trace. I am addicted and I watch it everyday now lol
Love your channel keep up the good work!
Earth be like: “who tf is that”
Aliens be like: “who tf is that”
Aliens are afraid of us.
look at what we do to each other. Imagine the glory things we would do to them. 1.Taxation 2. College funds....
hey Trace it'd be great if you posted links to prev episodes in descripion, just to make it a bit easier on those of us that have a hard time muddling thru main pages to find what we want to watch? just an idea, (but it'd really be great imo ;) )
I LOVE TestTubePlus. It's so fun and interesting and the best part is that you actually DO have time to watch it :D
man wont they aliens feel stupid when they realize we've already wasted all our resources.
Trace, I wanna thanque most profusely
4 your work on youtube and more specifically creating this channel!
AAAH! Trace stop teasing me common! I CANT WAIT TELL ME NOW XD! You should have guest hosts more often, this week has been epic!
Nobody knows we're here? I think they've known about us for thousands of years. They've been watching us for centuries! lol
This channel deserve more subs.
I don't hear any sound in this video. Is it just me, or is there something wrong with the video?
I can hear it
Just you dude
I think it's UA-cam, because I've had the same problem with other videos. But in this case it works for me. Try and restart your computer/phone/tablet.
Its you.
Eugene Khutoryansky I'm sorry mate...you are deaf.
Why would bringing microbes to Mars be "contaminating" the planet ?! That would be bringing life, that'd be amazing !
BOBOUDA first off, we do not know with 100% certainty that Mars is devoid of its own native life. if there is some form of Martian ecology, then any foreign life form could potentially disrupt any balance within that local system.
second, we do not know how microbes from earth would adapt/evolve on Mars. generally, we assume that the harsher conditions would make it harder for microbes to propagate; but we could be wrong. perhaps microbes could somehow thrive in heretofore unknown habitats on Mars and suddenly evolve to new levels of virulence; thereby making future manned missions to Mars suddenly riskier.
third, microbes could simply be a nuisance. for all we know, they might use up certain valuable minerals in the crust, or change the chemical composition of the atmosphere. unless it is part of a concerted effort to terraform the planet, such nuisances (especially if left unchecked for years) could make future colonisation efforts more difficult / expensive.
and these are just some reasons i could think of off the top of my head. there are probably better reasons if you ask an astronaut.
Gregory Samuel Teo
wow, all of these make sense, thanks for your reply !
BOBOUDA wow !
BOBOUDA wow !
iilikecereal hi !
7:50 sounds like a paradox where we are our own aliens coming back to help ourselves in the past to better the future somehow
What about Alien robots with AI?
I mean even we are starting to develop these 'species' and since they don't need any specific type of atmosphere or elements to survive wouldn't it be more likely for them to travel around the universe than for organic species?
What if they have heard our radio broadcasts and responded but are so far away we havent heard it yet?
Alien 1: Hey, look, a planet filled with intelligent apes!
Alien 2: Let's kill 'em for their oil!
*Yeah, just doesn't sound probable to me.*
+Red Priest Or lets study their DNA to find something unique... they probably kill 6 billion of us FOR SCIENCE!
from Larry Niven I think the Puppeteers (alien race) would be a nice example of how they could do things :) they are guiding humanity in certain directions just for their good, but not really hurting humanity in the act either. although humans don't know,
hence their name Puppeteers.
I love how movie logic is applied to real life scenarios.
Aliens are so fascinating, i came up with so many great plots that are not impossible. Options are infinite. I gave myself a goal to at least finish one of them.
09:24, although I hear that smokes are hella cheap on the moon...
If I ever got to meet aliens and say hello, my first question would be "do you know what death is? and is it the end?"
The audio in these videos is mixed down to, at the very least, -3dB ... maybe -6dB compared to the volume of most UA-cam vids. Everytime I hit a TestTube video, I have to turn my vol up by ~1/5 of the total range. Which is sad for me :(
Yeah that is annoying. Especially when I've got my headphones on and forget to turn it back down.
10:00 Kinda Like in Mission to Mars
What would I say if I saw an alien right now? "Whoa."
what if aliens found out the things that scientist put on voyager 1/2 I think they included a some kind of map where our planet is. lol I'm still curious where in universe is the voyagers 1 & 2.
I feel like the most likely motivation for an alien visit to earth would be study and/or exploration.
Damn Aliens coming here and stealing our jobs!
Erlin Hysenbelliu Thats racist
The took our jobs!
Mr. Hat das rite!
will that depends on which kind of alien race? there are ones that is peaceful and some that will kill for resources.
What about traveler aliens? Big colony ship that just travels through space and takes resources from any planet it comes in contact with. Maybe they need water for the next few light years and have to take ours on their way.
Hawking didn't assume aliens will try to conquer us, he just didn't rule out the option. As there is a possibility, it's better to stay safe and don't try to communicate.
love it x
The aliens could challenge us to best of 5 1980s classic video games.
If we discover an alien race and say, they're at level Rome, we would almost certainly (if we could get there) enslave them.
1:01 Conquest is not solely a human thing. Nearly all animals will fight and kill for food and resources.
the first radio signal weve sent powerful enough to traverse for several hundred light years was hitler's german olympics speech and i dont think thats how we want to be remembered
What people seem to forget is if we see a forming planet in the Goldilocks zone that is 100 thousand light years away with the Hubble telescope, we are seeing that planet 100 thousand years in the past. Life could have formed, evolved and gone extinct in that time and we wouldn't even know until we either get closer or just watch that planet for the next hundred thousand years.
I reckon there are aliens out there, watching us and have been for years, and laughing.
Is it also possible that we may be one of the last ? Why or why not? - regards to the fermi paradox
amazing
i think that aliens would have different ways of communication. for all we know "The WOW!" signal couldve been their way of talking. crazy concept
Will we ever make it to type1?
Jesus Montes You can contribute Earth accention to type one civilization by switching all your lightbulbs from energy-efficient to old incandescent type. Remmember the less efficient energy consumption, the faster we will make it. Scale doesn't care about efficiency. It cares only about amount
What would we do if aliens come to our solar system, but start colonizing one of the other planets. Like what will we do.
Probably. Look at what we did with species we didn't know/understand.
Yes
With the possibility of 8.8 billion earth-like planets in this galaxy alone... I HIGHLY DOUBT that Aliens would come here for our resources.
We humans are afraid of aliens taking over because that's what we would do to them, just like America.
I wonder how Aliens would react to our Dank Meme Montage Parody Videos
It could be a possibility that we are the first "Intelligent Life" in the universe.
If that's the case, we MUST go beyond the starts; spread life and knowledge throughout the universe.
***** What knowledge? How to destroy worlds by just living on it?
The fact that we don't know leads us to the most logical conclusion that we should avoid aliens until we can advance as a species.
How can the technologies continue to evolve if the main lobbie of the species in question is killing each other?I believe with high technologies come some kind of wisdom, otherwise they would not have achieved it, even tho alien attacking the earth is a good movie plot.
If aliens come, I will mate with one of their fine females.
FBI I’m still clapping them alien cheeks
Let's build a Candyland, that'll attract aliens
What if aliens are not from another universe but rather from another place in time? Think about that.
as we have become more advanced as a society we have become more united. when we went to the moon it was a collective effort, we've been a bit self-centered for the last few decades and haven't gone into space as much. my point being that for a species to be able to do something as advanced as space travel they would have to be a united species, cooperation is more useful than destruction
I think my physics major room mate put it best once. the only resource that Earth has that is relatively rare is liquid water. Everything else that is out there, you can find on a bunch of other planets and not all of them are inhabited. For any spacefaring aliens, it is easier to go to an uninhabited planet to get what you need because you do not need to put forward the effort to annihilate the current tenants first. Granted, this may not be hard to do, but it is still a hassle. Also, the logistics of interstellar invasion are horrendous. If you want to invade another planet, you have to put your entire army on a ship for god knows how long which is a colossal investment of resources. Also, I agree with them that a type 1 or 2 civilization would have little need for our resources.
what happens if it's a small group of aliens looking for planets to colonize, but then they come down here to find us?
Or extinct.
What's the problem? Just start the XCOM project, and maybe we'll be okay! (Kinda, since XCOM is really difficult)
Aliens are doing the same thing we are. Searching for other life.
What if in the future, we go out in space and find a society in its Neolithic age or some other point in history!?
Aliens are already here
Well, if they were coming to Earth for water, we could just say, "Dude, just go to Europa! It has SO much more water than Earth!"
Then it's possible the aliens see us as a future threat and they strike before we've learned to defend ourselves.
if they are capable of traversing the galaxy, that would prove they don't need violence. but if they repeatedly visited earth, it would mean they are looking for something specific.
That is a cool idea, I never thought of it like that. What if humans really are the first advanced life form, the firstborn. And we will be the master civilisation thar will shepherd the future sentient life in the galaxy when it arises.
What would they call themselves?
1:44 just like doctor who
To my knowledge the only resource we have on earth that is not available in large amounts all over in space is biomass. I think that would be bad for us.
Yeah, something tells me that whenever we meet aliens both us and them are going to be fine. Technology is advancing fast for Earth norms, but on the space scene I think morality should have enough time to catch up so that when we meet we can all get along and perhaps benefit.
i hope so
If aliens come here then we're done, they wouldn't bother to help us do anything but die. To them, at best, we'd be interesting farm animals.
D Jaquith we have one thing we can do, fight until they send there whole fleet into orbit steel a crashed ship fly it up and detonate a huge EMP bomb maybe throw in some nukes too and bang the invasion is no more then we find out where the came from and send the Black Death or some other horrible disease that would devastate there planet and all species on it Earth -1 Aliens -0
Celtic Lord10 Lets hope so. My feeling they kill us from orbit using robotic ships. If you can warp space you're essentially harnessing the power of a Sun, so it would be easy to imagine they could sterilize the entire surface of the planet in mere minutes.
Yes, some time next week. Hard to say exactly when, because ship arrival times are so uncertain. Oh, wait ... was I not supposed to tell you that? Pretend that you didn't hear anything, OK?
i dont think they would come for our resourses, because if ther technology is so advanced that they can overcome the huge distances between stars, ther techlogy schould be advanced enough to convert energy to material or something like that
I still think that if they are able to travel here, what keeps them from at least exhausting resources in their own system first... yes, maybe curiousity would get us here-- but the time it takes, the resources, would mean they would have to be type 1 or 2... we have nothing to offer them... water? Selfies with Saturn?
if their 1 they will need to gather resources from are sol if their good they will pay us back for it bad kill steal get out fast tier 2 well only a little energy they will need from us they would pay us back if good bad just claim are world and sol probable make us slave races and we a
have a star for solar energy planets with ore they might need and info we could trade so we have things
Guest wasted an "I come in peace" opportunity at the end ;p Great video, especially bringing in guests who are experts in the field :) hope we get to see more of that in future episodes.
5:44 the plot of cat planet cuties :)
lmao this is honestly the shit I talk about when I'm on the marijuanas o3o
Looking at human history, I wouldn't blame aliens for not sharing technological knowledge.
lol i could be wrong but the stamp hes talking about is the shape of the dna. or somthing. im probably wrong.
I think the reason there's trepidation from Hawking because competition is the drive of evolution.
what if they just came to study humans like we want to do on other planets
What if we are protected and watched over by aliens?
Aliens just need farm and ranch land
If aliens show up here. It is probably a one way trip for them. They would have no intention of leaving
Tim Jadeglans If they probed earth say a hundred thousand years ago and see that yea we could set up shop there and started flying here, close to the speed of light, and would show up now. It wouldn't really be the same place they set out to reach.
We suck we really really could use some friendly advanced aliens to come help us out so we don't destroy ourselves...
We all assume that an alien race would be superior as well as similar, but what if there were aliens with interstellar travel that came to earth for no reason (like they were stoned) and their most advance weapon was a board with a nail in it?
They come to hunt us for sport! :D
