How Lakhs of Nepali became STATELESS?

Citizenship is not just a piece of government document but it is much more than that. Without it, you wont be able to get a job in Nepal, open bank account, or get a passport. Now imagine a situation where both you parents are Nepali Citizen, you were born in Nepal, lived in Nepal for years, but now you are barred from having Citizenship. This is a reality for several lakhs of people in Nepal who have waited for years to obtain it. But how did this happen? And you must have seen the recent debates on the new Citizenship Amendment Act, which has triggered a nationwide debate on if it be used to give Citizenship to Indian. So, what is it and what's going on?
