Bro...a couple yrs ago I discovered them and listened to entire projects without knowing when each song would stop and start, while on psychedelics. Bro it's trip in itself
It's because it's a mixtape completely filled with samples which I'm sure Death Grips never got or paid permission to use, which would make it a nightmare of paying royalties and take a very long time to get permissions for it to make it on spotify.
I feel this strongly because it was Anthony that got me into Death Grips, and also Anthony that got me into new music actively again after a decade of me being disinterested and blah about music. Thank you Fantano.... sincerely. Here's to many decades of listening and reacting to new good shit. And of course thanks to Death Grips the most.
I discovered Exmilitary for myself only a few days ago, and having listened to Tyler the Creator, Playboi Carti, 100 Gecs, and many other artists it’s crazy to hear how this album inspired so much great music through the years
well they broke up once before and then came back with several releases thereafter and tours. so maybe they found a spark and were able to put the breakup on pause for a few years. we'll never really know what the whole initial breakup was about or why it happened, that much is certain. I do think it was an indication though, that the trio are not all that interested in remaining a cohesive unit and are very much about doing their own thing. I have said to many peers that the final track on year of the snitch was called "disappointed" for a reason however, and that track may have told us all we need to know about where the band is. still though, I cannot help but wonder if the pandemic really interfered with them like is has so many other bands. they are such a force when it comes to their live performances and stage presence. one cannot imagine a death grips release without an accompanying tour. so maybe, just maybe, covid got in the way of another release and they are waiting until they can tour again in order to release it. perhaps this is merely a hiatus. either way, as fans of this group we were completely and utterly spoiled with the consistent incredible releases, and we surely all took it for granted. how many bands have ever released the amount of ingenious material DG has in that time frame? surely every band has one or two stinkers but Death Grips mastered their niche and will eventually be remembered as one of the greatest bands of the last decade and perhaps, one of the greatest ever.
You talking about this album like it’s your kid who graduated is about to make me cry. As much as it scares me that they could just call it quits and leave us with possibly the best batting average discography ever. I could really see them coming through with a straight noise and jazz rock piece to blow the pants off of us in like 5 years 😂

We'll likely be waiting a while for any new content but with how incredibly talented the entire band are individually and as a group I have no doubt that whatever we get will be of excellent quality and full of absolute bangers
50 years from now every Death Grips project will still sound fresh and unique. They had an all time high quality catalog by the time they dropped Government Plates, and it's grown no less legendary since.
I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing, what day of the week it was, what time of day it was, and the season. If an album can make you do that, it's as legendary as a pink Floyd album.
Death grips changed my life. The first song I listened to was "on gp" when I was just 15 and it changed my life forever, from the first listen it changed my outlook in music and I started to enjoy music in ways I never thought I would.
Thanks for introducing me to Dead Grips, growing up in the 80's as a Rap fan and at the end of the 80's into Industrial Metal, this was like damn, just what i needed.
My opinion is that this album stands the test of time because Death Grips are artistic in everything they do. They are unashamedly themselves but they also put effort into their music. I feel like this ability to be mentally free to create what you truly want to (rather than what will sell) is admirable and each member brings something unique, stylistic, and artistic to the table. Rides vocals are emotive, the lyrics are strange but poignant. It's like an insight into how someone's mind spins when they have a lot to think about going from one thing to another to another. It all makes sense but you need a little bit to unravel it. This is one of the few records that I remember lyrics randomly when walking around. So much reminds me of it, and this makes me think that the writing and the subject matter of the songs (however vague) are the raw thoughts and feelings that many of us can relate to from day to day. Zach Hill is truly a creative genius. I don't think I need to say much more but these songs are some of the most creative arrangements, variety and quality of sounds and textures, phrases, articulations, use of technology, etc that I have ever heard. From a production point of view I'm in awe of the musicality and technical expertise and freedom. This record feels fresh because the production and ideas were fresh and cannot simply be copied. You can't copy raw talent. Death Grips tapped into something that if anybody else tried to copy them it would fall flat on its arse because it would lack any integrity, any character.
Man I don't know what to comment but it's weird that my man Anthony hasn't changed confessed his love for Spotem'Gottem, the greatest up and coming new hit popular rap artist.
i think this is my favorite album of all time. idk if its nostalgia or stockholm syndrome but every time i put it on i'm guaranteed a 48 minute good time.
A lot of people were vaping DMT and making industrial hip hop in 2011-2012 but Death Grips were one of the few groups to have the focus to actually record and polish it. Everybody else was just basically screaming into a microphone over a bass synth loop.
I remember hearing Ex-Military when /mu/ was shilling it before TMS was a sparkle in Zach's eye. I loved it so fucking much. I remember the insane TMS hype. I was honestly disappointed when I first heard it, but I quickly fell in love after 3 or 4 listens. I remember the NLDW fiasco with the label, and the hype surrounding it. Then the album art.... that's when I realized how genius and truly avant garde they were. Again, was disappointed, but quickly fell in love. This is a trend that followed with EVERY LP of theirs, except Year of the Snitch. The others get kinda tired, but Ex-Military still hasn't to me. There are a few tracks that are a bit of a lul, but the hits hit SO. FUCKING. HARD. I know gushing about DG is a meme, but they are legitimately my favorite music outfit of all time. Their entire aura and image is so intriguing and interesting. I can't pick a favorite LP. But Stockton is underrated you fucks.
I remember first hearing this in a listenalong with /mu/. It was just a bunch of guys geeking out to shit we'd never heard before. Looking back I think it was a period where I was having the most fun I'd ever have on the internet
What you touch on at the end of this little video, the bands portrayal lyrically and sonically of a benign digital dystopia that we've sort of entered into since the band started releasing music, has been the reason I haven't returned to Death Grips recently. Its scary to listen back to these records, think about what Ride is rapping about and not feel the distance I once felt between my lived experience and Ride's (or his characters's) portrayal of life in techno-dystopia. Being a teenager when I first heard Death Grips to now a few years into my adult life, he veil has sort of been lifted for me and the music feels more relevant. That being said, Klink still goes hard as fuck.
I was 19 when this record came out, and Anthony's right: this record came out of seemingly nowhere and just started making waves. 2011 was a really strong, transitional year for hiphop (Goblin/ XXX/ Live. Love. A$AP), but this thing dropped and everything else suddenly looked quaint. By the time The Money Store came out, pretty much all of my mates at uni were hooked.
Join the "I'm getting old" crew. I was about struggling to find something new past my hardcore punk/alt rap/noise Rock when you reviewed this. Prob one of the reasons I keep coming back to the Needledrop.
I just got into this album last month and it truly blew my mind. Cannot wait to gradually grow into the rest of their discog, ExMilitary feels so fresh and fantastic
It just sounds so fucking visceral. Was in lockdown for new years so best we could do was drink at home and put this record on loud, and I was just blown away by the fact some guys could make two little speaker membranes do THAT. After being familiar with the record for like 8 years too it still sounds fresh and vibrant, hits me in the gut every time.
I can only imagine how different my musical experience would have been had I discovered Death Grips sooner. I came in around the mid 10’s and it completely changed what I thought hip-hop could be. The idea that Exmilitary could have been my Skyrim background music is surreal. I can’t imagine how insane it must have been to hear back when NOTHING sounded quite like it, at the time.

Still my favorite project of theirs, so raw, so cohesive, so boundary pushing to this fuckin DAY
Man I don't know what to comment but it's weird that my man Anthony hasn't changed confessed his love for Spotem'Gottem, the greatest up and coming new hit popular rap artist.
Can’t wait until 2030 when he puts out a video celebrating the 10 yr anniversary of Spotemgotem and Pooh Shiesty linking up
I'm going to take a bike ride and listen to the death grips discography.
i think this is my favorite album of all time. idk if its nostalgia or stockholm syndrome but every time i put it on i'm guaranteed a 48 minute good time.
Just started listening to death grips a month ago and it feels like this music could have been released yesterday
A lot of people were vaping DMT and making industrial hip hop in 2011-2012
but Death Grips were one of the few groups to have the focus to actually record and polish it. Everybody else was just basically screaming into a microphone over a bass synth loop.
This is gonna sound frickin crazy but whenever I touch a sandwich
I started Death Grips. Glad Fantano is catching up.
Andy spammed it all over the internet. Proof that hardcore shilling works
The raw energy that can only come from an artists first few works is more interesting to me than when they develop and refine their craft
That being said, Klink still goes hard as fuck.
honestly every album they make is next level and puts to shame anyone in there genre
I just found this album a month ago and now it is life
They ain’t done! 2023 tour
on one hand, I'm sad this will never be on Spotify, but on the other I'm glad that hundreds of illegal samples were on this record
he come to me with money in his hand! He offered me, I didn't ask him
Ethan Alfonso I'M THE KING MAN! I RUN THE UNDERWORLD GUY!
It's on Spotify on people's custom lists
Join the "I'm getting old" crew. I was about struggling to find something new past my hardcore punk/alt rap/noise Rock when you reviewed this. Prob one of the reasons I keep coming back to the Needledrop.
the confirmation bias i need rn
ah he did this to try to summon a new album huh.
Year Of The Snitch will age extremely well. TPTB as well.
YOTS is my album of the decade that shit is so great.
Jenny Death is still their best album, all the others I've mostly grown out of
I just got into this album last month and it truly blew my mind. Cannot wait to gradually grow into the rest of their discog, ExMilitary feels so fresh and fantastic
Thank you, Anthony.
RIP Mr Grips, all we can do now is reminisce
I can’t understand why I like this album so much
Oh shit i'm feeling it
Are you killing it as well?
Why am I crying jesus christ. So many drunken nights blasting DG. I absolutely can't wait for the next record!
We get it bro you like Death Grips
IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES
Death grips is done, Alive grips is born!!!
