It's nice to see a video where ppl don't mock mc for being a black guy who's sounds different,As a black person I really enjoy deathgrips music, it does make me giggle sumtime but that includes my excitement for the tracks! It's so hype my autism loves it, sucks the anger out of me! Death grips is such a cool band! Specially knowing this crazy stuff. These guys need a movie haha.
Fr tho. Mc Ride is easily one of the most unique characters I have ever discovered through the internet. The power he puts behind his performances is undeniable. I feel like just listening Death Grips increases my heart rate
Great video, looking forward to you doing more videos about albums in the future! I'd love to hear clips from the actual music that was sampled and of the songs themselves in the future, I feel like it would help give a lot of context. Also, if I was you, I would totally take advantage of the stems of all their songs you can grab for free online. That would also help a ton for lyrical analysis so you aren't just re-reading it to us.
Agreed I've definitely dabbled in this for early episodes that got either taken down or demonetized immediately - it's tricky with Music because the algorithm for content is so aggressive with it, but rest assured I have and am continuing to put thought into this.
I didn't watch with this doc the first time I saw it in my feed. Just assumed it was another music channel trying to get quick views by restating things that could be understood with just one listen to the album, or with a few glances of reddit threads. But I saw your Money Store doc in my feed today and decided to come watch this project in full to make a fair judgement. I was very wrong with my assumption. This is a very well put together documentary delving into details I haven't picked up even after 4 years of Death Grips being my favorite band. I am excited to see the rest of the Death Grips Documentary series. Thank you for putting these together. Creating such impressive content at such a small scale is insane, but I'm glad you are taking on the task.
Great analysis, it's awesome to see somebody put this sort of effort in. You mention Death Grips fans are likely the only consumers of this content, but I think it's existence really facilitates new listeners diving in deeper. I like the shifting backgrounds, but when combined with the text drifting around it adds a lot of extra effort to parse the (well sourced) quotes. The content is also so information dense (in a good way), that the viewer doesn't have time to read text that's being displayed and listen to your commentary at the same time, even if both are working towards your thesis. I wouldn't get rid of the wiggle all together, but maybe consider keeping at least the text static in the future. I can't speak for for anyone else, but for me it was a constant distraction in an otherwise flawless video.
4:35 The sample they used was actually Beware by Yabby You, which also sampled the Dicky Burton song. Nobody knows anything about Dicky Burton and he only made that song. I think a lot of influence from Yabby You/other dub artists shows up on DG songs quite frequently, especially with their use of delay
Yo Super fire & super in depth One sample you may not have caught on thru the walls is “Space is the place” by Sun Ra He was a super low key figure but so many people aight his as a shining point of inspiration on the weirder side of contemporary hip hop or jazz acts
Sun Ra easily the most “Death Grips” artist I would say as far as Ra’s biography and life mission and just the entire universe and inspiration that Ra created is without a doubt the grandfather of Death Grips. He was not doing conceptual characters, Sun Ra at some point in the mid/late 50’s I believe changed his name and whole heartedly, unconditionally started being open about his real background, identity and mission. And the cosmic and spiritual and magick elements that were not followed with a wink or a smirk as if they’re saying “ain’t this cute?” , there was no 4th wall being broken because they’re not going to develop a fourth wall between the audience and the art.
That song is so far out there. I remember hearing the full track played on a college radio station while I was studying in the cafeteria. It just went on and o n and o n as I drifted deeper into my head. Very memorable experience
Great video man! I can't believe that this masterpiece is 10 years old already, especially considering the fact that this album doesn't age at all, if anything it is more relevant now somehow & still sounds great as it did in 2011.
This was such a detailed analysis and it definetely made me appreciate this album (or mixtape (or both i dunno how it works)) even more than I already did. Great work and attention to detail. This diserves way more views and I can't wait for more death grips stuff from you.
I'm afraid I didn't even get 10 minutes in before putting Exmilitary on to listen to for the umpteenth time. By the way, this mixtape sounds very interesting on vinyl.
Music appears to be a pure pleasure technology, a cocktail of recreational drugs that we ingest through the ear to stimulate a mass of pleasure circuits at once. -Steven Pinker, in his 1997 book How the Mind Works
loved the video, just maybe try and switch up the templates every once in a while? otherwise it’s really good, a welcome change from most of the DG video essays
Oh yessir, if you watch the new Doris and Alchemst videos you might like how i've moved stuff around and added in new interestingly themed pictures. Next episode will be quite unique too.
Good stuff, mate Keep it up. Theres a lot of analysis vids out there, they sll enf uo more about the clown making than the band in questio. Thanks, more please and thank you.
Awww man you just gonna gloss over "responsibilities cool, but there's more things in life". Up there with now we got all the coconuts bitch as the great dg lyrics
Forgot to mention how the first song beware it's basically instructions on how to perform a satanic sacrifice and the sample of Manson at the beginning it's one of his only moments of clarity in an interview Manson was trying to explain why he didn't want to commit murders or need to he was a a pimp for rock and roll Stars it is slightly amusing how you skip to track three so quickly
Amazing video & a great backstory- but I wish there was more about The Money Store, The Powers That B & other albums. Going to see them in a week and don’t even know what to expect!
Manson was never convicted of actual murder himself he urged two other people into it ..so they say but there is deep conspiracy stuff surrounding his story though very fascinating intellectual voyage, actually you'll know when you look up 'Laurel Canyon' a d his connection to it...
i just rewatched this video after 2 years again and i'm so grateful you put in the work to thoroughly analyse the band and their work. i just wanted to say that i would love to see you bringing back this series and diving into other projects of DG and even different artist. your research, format and commentary is amazing! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The idea of this video is really cool, but when I'm learning about a band or listening to something about them, the last thing I want to listen to is a continuous stream of narration. I want to hear samples from the music, from the sample library itself, clips from interviews, etc.. It's all well and good to talk about something in absentia, but this is UA-cam, where showing someone a music clip is as easy as inserting it into the video. I suppose this is a reaction to demonetizations... in which case, fuck UA-cam if so.

Right now
Excited for this series, also please include steroids it's too amazing to ignore
@JayEssArr it definitely deserves one imo , ur right it’s so different to any other dg project and far too good to ignore imo

WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT MC RIDE WEARING A SUIT IN THE THUMBNAIL-
Looks like I’m late, because now it changed
Guessing this used to have a different thumbnail but at one show all 3 of the members showed up in suits cus they mean serious business
I’m willing to bet the the members of death grips hate this video.
4:35 The sample they used was actually Beware by Yabby You, which also sampled the Dicky Burton song. Nobody knows anything about Dicky Burton and he only made that song.

Death grips has a lot of nasty shit in their music but culture Shock remains the only one that always makes me sick to my stomach
That's always the first song I think of as a counter argument to someone saying they're just nonsense
I think they just picked stuff because it sounded cool, lol
Great video man! I can't believe that this masterpiece is 10 years old already, especially considering the fact that this album doesn't age at all, if anything it is more relevant now somehow & still sounds great as it did in 2011.
Amazing man
That worthikids drawing of death grips is so amazing
50 years from now Death Grips will still sound fresh and unique. Outstanding catalog from a truly innovative band.
Thank you so much
Exmilitary always gave me an esoteric cult leader vibe, and the 60s-70s samples help that a lot
