I just see this video lured by the current controversy within French and Argentinian soccer fans and teams as well (July 2024).
And let the truth set us free, Trevor already exposed the very same issue and now, it recurred four years later.
As mentioned by Trevor, -“African when unknown, French when you are a hero… “Hipocracy at its best.

What point does he have? With the hyperfocus of equality these days, why can't the black players just be French? Trevor is basically saying no, they're not French. In spite of the fact that they were born in France, speak French, play on the French team, and won the world cup for their country, they are African. Doesn't that sound a bit racist to you?

Trevor had a huge platform and was constantly giving his opinion. Others, to use your words, have a 100% right to criticize it. Trevor doesn't even have experience of being born in France and being told he's not French. Besides, he says Africa, as though it is one nation - it's a continent of many different nations with different experiences, customs and languages. Like saying Italians are the same as Germans. He should know better but was salty about the criticism.

Those players are born and raised in France and they don:t know much (if anything) from the land where their parents came from.
When Trevor labels them "African" he's technically correct but he's soft-segregating them based on the color of their skin.
The French government is doing the right thing by promoting integration.
Trevor just wants to promote his native land without worrying about the consequences of his words and then on a separate show complain that black people are "somehow" treated differently.
Morgan Freeman is right, to get rid of racism people should talk about people, not race.

You should ask a black French person what they think. Unlike America, Europeans do not care about the country of someone’s ancestors. It doesn’t make any sense to say what country a person’s ancestors come from. It only matters the country or countries where they themselves were are actually from. Also, many Black people in America do not like the term African-American, because it doesn’t make sense. Many Black people have been in the US longer than German Americans, or Scandinavian Americans, or French Americans, for example, but for some reason only Black people get that title, so it’s kind of weird. It makes more sense to say your actual nationality, and when you go to Europe, please do not tell people what European country your ancestors are from, because you are not a citizen of that country. It doesn’t make sense. The land where your ancestors lived has nothing to do with you. May be a little with your culture, but culture changes, a lot, and the way Americans view ancestry from other countries is unique and not shared by the rest of the world.

it's interesting how immigration background and what we call it is different in different countries. you highlighted how it's perceived in the US and France in different ways. In the Netherlands, my home country we have also a lot of people of colour, partly because of the colonial background, partly for other reasons. What's different is that we don't have a word to describe African Americans/black coloured people. It is always called by what country a person comes from or originated from. many surinamese decendants are never called African American because they are black but simply surinamese (surinamers), from turkish decent Turks (Turken) from indonesia indonesians (indo's), from Marocco Maroccans (Marrokanen). The county their lineage comes from is what they identify with or get identified with, because some might hate to be called anything other then Dutch. i also think racism and how it's looked upon varies massively from country to country, and much has to do with the specific history of that country and the history of immigration in that country. just an observation to a very complicated issue but not always negative. one thing i know for sure, if you're a minority by origin or colour in another country you WILL be called something, positive or negative, because you stand out, you're different. I'm a white guy in a coloured country, and yes, they have names for that here too. It's ok, i love it here and it's my home.

Trevor comes across kinda as somewhat ignorant here regarding the French perspective, starting out with how he understands the criticism. But then dismissing it (I mean even "who can become French" sounds strange to me. Because afaik the vast majority of them didn't +become+ French, they were right from the start of their life).
Also, what he mentions as positive, "celebrating your identity", comes across as weird for many other (Western) Europeans as well (in my case: German)
e.g. someone who never set a foot into Germany, doesn't speak the language (besides maybe a handful of phrases) and barely has any knowledge of the country... but then claiming to be "German"... would seem somewhat +fake+ to us here.
(also, a small sidenote: what's with the French/African duality? like, Africa isn't a country, but a continent)

They have African origins, but their descent doesn't make their individuality, that is at least philosophycally debatable. And in this case, they were playing for France, not Africa. Btw no African country ever won the World Cup, if these players were trained in Africa they would have never made it. However Trevor is right about the fact that Black people in France are seen as African or French depending on their background.

Firstly, your concluding question bears no relevance to the main issue, and seems to be an attempt to divert the conversation by critiquing the US, making it an irrelevant point. Secondly, these individuals are as much African as they are French. It's not about where they were trained, but about their deep-rooted heritage. One doesn't negate centuries of heritage simply by being born in France. While they embrace the benefits of French citizenship, they don't abandon their origins. Both identities coexist harmoniously, which is Trevor's argument. These individuals are the proud descendants of those who endured challenges to establish themselves in France, nurtured their offspring there, who in turn, trained and triumphed in the World Cup alongside their teammates. What's evident is the synergy between immigrants and French society, producing some of the top football players globally. There's no contention here. The only friction arises from those who believe that one's heritage should be forsaken to shield them from prejudice, from racism. But that's just cowardly. We shouldn't obliterate heritage to safeguard individuals from bigotry; we should eradicate bigotry itself. Yes these guys are as proud Africans as they are proud French people.

With the hyperfocus on equality these days, why can't the black players just be French? Trevor is basically saying no, they're not French. In spite of the fact that they were born in France, speak French, play on the French team, and won the world cup for their country, they are African. Doesn't that sound a bit racist to you?

Trevor Noah, you can't understand that.. a big cultural gap separates the 2 continents.
there is no communitarianism in Europe as in the Anglo-Saxon countries. it is forbidden to refer to people's origins.
the integration model is entirely different.
in the United States, integration is not desirable. communities must remain isolated with barriers between them.

I am from Europe and dont like this angle. But I like Trevor. Still do, he is great.
Trevor is forcing his African-American identity ideas and experience to other people in a foreign country. If anything; ask the players what they identify as, not Trevor Noah.
And to use french nazis like its anything more a french attitude than idiot nazis anywhere, is also off.
First time I think he missed. And he doubled down and missed again.
But thats comedy I guess. Cant please everyone all the time. If the americans enjoyed this, then he made it and at the end of the day is what is important for him.

Thank you for being humble and straight forward.

Hello Trevor I’m a big fan of you as an American humorist and will always be. What the ambassador of France says is not a political thing it is deeply anchored in our Nation. France is universalist it goes beyond races and religions. Kids of immigrants like myself born in France don’t belong to an ethnic group or a race community. No one ever would ask you about your race ever ! There is no race but human. I know it might sound strange and I don’t say there is no racism in France but it’s more of a social racism tinted with cultural back ground actually where your parents originally come from but no one would put you in a box classified by races. It would be actually anticonstitutionnel. You may say these players parents are originally from Africa but these kids are French and proud to be such cause no one would treat them like humans of an other kind. Being French is sharing the same values same projects same knowledge. Education, Health and Justice are blind they don’t treat you differently based on your race and money. And I’m not trying to say France is better on this topic better than the US you guys proved you can do better: this is the first western country who ever got a president of color. For this you gained our deepest respect and admiration because for how French ppl are open minded about religions ppl of different origins etc after we beheaded the king and said enough with the idea that the power belongs to a man based on his affiliation though anyone has access to them families of old French nobility push their kids to the highest school of law and administration in the hope of seeing their descendants acceding to the highest fonctions which they lost on the the stage of French Revolution’s guillotine.
    Just for the anecdote

These housing projects for the North African Immigrants were all over France mostly on the outskirts of the big metropolitan areas. In the late 50s all the way to early 79s, for instance, one had to take the train to get to Paris, (it was expensive), to go for job interviews. These immigrants were stuck, isolated and unemployment was between 25-50% amongst the younger ones. Today the unemployment statistics at a little better 16-20 or some places 25%. Unfortunately many of the young ones turned toward the easier alternative of drug dealing to support their families (parents who receive a poverty level retirement pension). By the way, the term « racaille » came directly from President Sarkozy’s mouth and is used regularly since to describe the youth from the « ZONE ».

i agree with you in most of youre points but saying you want to inclue them in youre africaness sounds weirdly familiar to the thing you criticise about the french mentality. In my view you should not support or hate peaple solely because where they come from.
So as a fellow human beeing i think it is an amazing thing for them to accomplish. Besides the fact that Fifa is milking it wherever it can and i dont watch the games anymore.
