MG Mercurius and Vayeate seem like an extreme long-shot, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at Full Mechanics versions. Next year is the Wing 30th Anniversary, so who knows?
I built this kit at the end of 2019, it was my first kit after ~17 years of no building, didn't even had appropriate tools but I liked it enough to get back in the hobby.
A really cool take on the TV version for sure. I prefer the mechanical over the angel wings. Like you, I didn't get a chance to build this kit when it first released and it's yet another one on my wishlist. Someday. Cool review as always.
One fun key noticeable part is the " Yellow bird claws " are now in the twin Buster rifle instead of attaching on the blue arms since TV OG Wing have them articulated when in bird mode.
This was my first MG that I ever built to completion. Probably one of my favorite kits in my collection period. People recommended to me in the first place because it is a good kit for people who want to get into MGs and I have to say the same.
This is in my backlog right now. Cant wait to build it. As for a tv version, this one isn’t too different looking from the tv version. I like the look of the sharp-edged wings better than the curved wings.
The really odd thing is that this includes the Heero pilot figure...the EW/GoL timeline never had him piloting the Proto-Zero. Quatre, Duo, and Trant Clark were the ones piloting it. Zechs stalemated it with the Tallgeese Flugel, and then took the wreckage of the two suits and rebuilt it into the Wing Zero (Custom), before trading that with Heero for the Epyon.
He DID pilot it, for a VERY SHORT while. Driven berserk by the Zero System, went on a rampage with beam sabers in the OZ base, trashing Virgos & killing OZ soldiers before being forcibly stopped by Quatre in the broken Mercurius & both of them managed to escape to Earth. Just like in the original anime.
I don't see any point in them making an actual mg wing zero tv version as I see this kit as exactly that. If they had marketed this as wing zero and not proto zero from the manga, nobody would bat an eye. I'd just treat this kit as the tv version of the wing zero. If you put this kit side-by-side with the 1/100 wing zero, you would see that this kit is just a modern revision of the original tv wing that is still faithful to the original without changing too much.
This kit is technically a ver ka of the Okawara's wing zero so yeah, I don't see a reason for bandai to make a TV ver. which is less popular than EW ver.
Proto Zero is a lousy replacement for the TV zero. It can't do a lot of the things the TV can do (opening chest vents, flip out machine guns, transforming legs, wing articulation) and comes off looking inferior. Should they ever make a MG of the TV version, the Metal Robot Spirits is what should be referenced.
@@fantastiCkiLler92 Exactly, it's a "ver ka" without changing much of the design unlike the wing ver ka. It's like asking for a mg tv version of the epyon when the mg ew is available and identical in every aspect of the design language.
I’ve always wondered why the later Wing Zero Ver Ka didn’t use a colored piece for the sensor in the chest like this one uses and instead opted for a sticker under a clear part.
@@papafoundry5537I own the TV RG Wing, it is about as big as an average HG despite Wing MSs are meant to be a smaller. Although to be fair, it is the same for the HG kits too.
HOBBY LOBBY STARTED CARRYING THIS KIT AND I FINALLY HAVE THE TWO I NEED One to paint One to display on a shelf of wing zeros (this is my favorite mobile suit design of all time, I’m a slut for base Wing Zero)
I always loved the design of the TV Version compared to the EW version, so I love having this MG since it's the closest MG I can get that looks like the TV version. Haha.
i might have to dig mine out and mess with it, i always preferred the tv zero to the EW, and the Proto Zero is wonderful though I do wish the wings had more articulation (opening gimmick aside, moreso being able to tilt the entire wing upwards for good flying poses i wish it could do)
I wish this design was more sharp and angular like the wings are. It’s far too close to the tv design for my liking. I like the tv design a lot I just think this needs to be more unique from it to stand on its own merits
This kit in reality is literally the Wing Zero Ver Ka without a Ver Ka label. Bought this kit when it first came out and I love the sleeker look, not a huge fan of the Okawara bulky W0 design. It's kinda funny that the only TV ver Wing gundam MG is also redesign by Katoki himself....
Are you planning on reviewing the Goodsmile Moderoid RahXePhon? Just rented the DVD from the library and the model kit looks really good compared to the old Bandai one
Ah yes, the superior version of the Wing Zero, in my honest opinion. Frankly, the more realistic wings of the Katoki design never really made sense for me, on the Wing Zero Custom. For the Tallgeese, it at least looked cohesive, but with the Wing Zero Custom... yeah, something about it just... doesn't feel right.
Basically they're the same Gundam, the Proto Zero is slimmer and more angular; without going into too much detail this was the first form it appeared in the EW Glory of the Losers manga and then it was upgraded to the version that appeared in the EW OVAs.
Yep. One of my favorite renditions of my favorite MS, the Metal Robot Damashii version(more ANIME accurate) is a close second & the redone MG ver KA Zero Custom(also from Glory Of Losers) is a close third.
I thought this was just Katoki giving the TV version a MG. I was looking forward to a RG to go with that amazing Epyon...but we got RG grandpa Gundam 2.0 instead.
Only the Wing Gundam (tv version) got a MG standard release. The (tv version) of the Wing Zero did not get a MG release. They did release a standard release for the Wing Zero (EW OVA version) as well. The only other MG Gundam Wing kits that come close to having a MG (tv version) would be the standard release of the MG Tallgeese EW version, P-Bandai Tallgeese II, or the standard release of the MG Gundam Epyon (but not really because they were all Katoki redesigns as well), but the only thing that comes close to it in that scale would be the old HG 1/100 Wing Zero. Still to this day I haven’t seen a (tv version) of the Gundam Heavyarms or Gundam Sandrock in 1/100 scale except from Third Party versions. I would love to get the whole Gundam Wing crew in MG form for their TV Versions of their respective mobile suits.
What are the differences between this Proto Zero and the T.V. Wing Zero? Aside from a few small changes like the knee vents and vents in the wings, they look the same to me.
The differences you said, the shield, the proportions (a bit lankier), the way the cannons open up (TV's flip around, versus a hatch here) extra white on the shoulders, buster rifles have more beveling and details to it and a darker shade of gray, the wings are sharper with intake details for the yellow, and i believe it doesnt have the opening chest vents the TV version had but i might be wrong on that one.
@@ORLY911 The kit itself doesn't have the chest vents, not sure if in the manga they appeared. Also the wings in the Proto Zero do not have vulcans in the wings.
Best thing I've found is just using a razor blade to shave off any 'extra' before you apply it. Once you've put a topcoat on it can look quite good. If your blade is nice and sharp it's a pretty painless process.
MG Mercurius and Vayeate seem like an extreme long-shot, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at Full Mechanics versions. Next year is the Wing 30th Anniversary, so who knows?
thats actually a good theory, SEED FM ran its course and will probably just get limited variants at this point, so Wing getting some makes sense
If they are MGs they will be PBandai 100%
based
I'm not even a big Wing fan anymore, but AC Mobile Suits are severely unrepresented. If I had an MG Aries, I would basically die and go to heaven.
I built this kit at the end of 2019, it was my first kit after ~17 years of no building, didn't even had appropriate tools but I liked it enough to get back in the hobby.
when I was a kid the fact that the thing transformed was the coolest thing in the world, now not so much anymore
I would like a TV version. It would be great to get a mg for Wing Zero, Deathscythe Hell, and Nataku
A really cool take on the TV version for sure. I prefer the mechanical over the angel wings. Like you, I didn't get a chance to build this kit when it first released and it's yet another one on my wishlist. Someday.

Amazing build, love the Proto Zero design! 👏🤖

So, Hobby Lobby has 40% off their model kits bi-weekly. I bought this one last week and now all I see are people building it. Don’t spoil it for me! 😂
All of the EW Ver Ka were gone, so I grabbed him instead.
Going there today just for this reason 😂
@@djhollis8841 be sure to check the signage. They have some cool lenticular signs of the RX-78
I really like this design. I think the added detail to the mech from the original anime design really perfects it.
This is literally my very first model kit i’ve ever built. And this first kit leads to a mountain of backlog for me now
Looking good especially when the wings are spread out.
The base has movement. Pull the stem and it will come loose and you can angle it slightly forward.
This is in my backlog right now. Cant wait to build it. As for a tv version, this one isn’t too different looking from the tv version. I like the look of the sharp-edged wings better than the curved wings.
Built this twice. Fun Build!
Been waiting a long time hoping for MG versions of all the TV suits, given they did do the TV version Wing.

I’ve always wondered why the later Wing Zero Ver Ka didn’t use a colored piece for the sensor in the chest like this one uses and instead opted for a sticker under a clear part.
They did that for painters obviously. Because you can't paint colored clear parts into other clear color.
I got Proto Wing standing next to Deathscythe Rousette, Heavyarms Igel, Sandrock Armadillo, and Shenlong Liaoya
I just want to see how cool this design will look as a modern RG.
I think the wing RGs are too small. 1:100 scale is the perfect size for them as they are already on the smaller side.
