  • Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
    Forgive our foolish ways!
    Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
    In purer lives Thy service find,
    In deeper reverence, praise.
    In simple trust like theirs who heard
    Beside the Syrian sea
    The gracious calling of the Lord,
    Let us, like them, without a word
    Rise up and follow Thee.
    Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
    Till all our strivings cease;
    Take from our souls the strain and stress,
    And let our ordered lives confess
    The beauty of Thy peace.
    Breathe through the heats of our desire
    Thy coolness and Thy balm;
    Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
    Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
    O still, small voice of calm!
    Dear Lord and Father of mankind
    Words: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892).
    C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918)
    Arr. H. A. Chambers to music from "Judith"
    St. Bartholomew's Choir
    Paolo Bordignon, Organist and Choirmaster

    Astonishing and lovely - AND the very rare Chambers arrangement! Even the Wells Cathedral doesn't get it right. Thank you. I will save it forever.

    So poignant, especially because of the Covid 19 context in which it was filmed. I play this often. It never fails to uplift and inspire. Thank you, 'Barts'.

    So moving, partly because of the Covid context during which it was filmed. I play it often and never fail to be uplifted and inspired. Thank you, ' Barts'.

    The 2007 movie Atonement makes especially poignant use of this hymn. The scene is the Normandy beach in (I think) 1940, where 300,000 exhausted allied soldiers are waiting to be rescued before the Germans arrive. There is a gazebo filled with English soldiers, singing this hymn. Noble and heartbreaking.

      It was Dunkirk where the soldiers were rescued. There's a separate film with that title. The boat rescue is also covered in "Mrs. Miniver" with Greer Garson.
