  • In just over a year the GMC has grown to over 3100 congregations and 3400 clergy. A recent article by Rev. Keith Boyette examines this growth and the hopes for the GMC, in this video Jeffrey breaks down the article and gives his own reflections on the development within the Global Methodist Church.

My dream and hope for the GMC is a vibrant, orthodox worldwide Wesleyan body. I do hope that we coalesce around a common desire to exhibit all the strengths and values praised by Christ in His words to the seven churches of Revelation 2 & 3, while consciously heeding His warnings about the failures of those same churches.
I do hope that we establish and promote a common liturgy and order of worship that will allow a visitor to any GMC church to feel the commonality and cohesiveness in our worship and beliefs as Wesleyan Christians. I am a high church, liturgical type that does not find the flashing lights, loud praise bands and unstructured style common today to be truly worshipful. I feel that within the liturgy, creeds, common prayers and traditional hymns there is considerable instruction in the faith as well as dignified worship and praise of the Almighty. Such liturgy, creeds and hymns also remind us of our ties to faithful believers of the church triumphant. I recognize that there must be allowances for cultural differences and some flexibility in worship styles, but we should be recognizable to one another as Wesleyan/Methodist in our beliefs and mode of worship.
I have greatly enjoyed your podcasts and can only hope that every leader of the GMC can exhibit your faithfulness, integrity, intelligence, knowledge and humility. If so, we will also be praised by Christ for our fruitfulness.

Same here, but I like it somewhere in between. (similar to a small church style)
It was really cool to be able tp visit a UMC from another town, and not be totally lost in worship.

So UMC bishops are crying crocodiles, tears over the rise of the GMC. Ironically, the UMC has brought this upon themselves.
My Church in Central Pennsylvania has decided to remain independent for at least a year. With what I heard and read about the GMC, I'll be surprised if our Church doesn't gravitate towards this new denomination.
My guess is that the GMC will experience another influx of new congregations a year or so from now.
Thank you again, Jeff, for your spiritual guidance of us through this process.

UMC Bishops that are in violation of the BOD and should not be ordained in the UMC much less a Bishop. Other than that, what’s the issue?

The AME Church, as you know is a Wesleyan denomination with over 6,000 Churches and even more clergy. Of course, this is our worldwide numbers.

I would love to hear an interview with someone representing the Southern Methodist Church. It was an attempt to continue the ME Church, South, after the 1938/9 union with the ME Church.

I actually bought a book about them and their doctrine and have the contact for a guy to speak with. I wanted to get some reading done before I solicited his attention. Stay tuned!

I agree that the "culturally relevant evangelism" could be a troublesome point. The current culture really took over the UMC, and I would hate to see the same thing happen again in the GMC. The church I belong to has decided to remain independent for now as we want to see what happens with the GMC as all these churches come on board.

I almost swallowed my gum as you read the eight core values and said, “culturally relevant evangelism.” If I were considering the GMC I’d insist on knowing who was in the meeting when this was added, what was the discussion, and who made the decision to add it? Everyone knows this is a loaded term and, in my estimation, everyone had better agree on what it means. One person may think it means you can wear jeans to church, because that’s the culture. Another may think it means large (or even small) sections of scripture can be eliminated or ignored because it makes them uncomfortable.

I agree. I was really worried about the name Global Methodist. I have researched, and I will go with them on faith…just like I originally did with the UMC. Hope the GMC stays true.

Moderate-to-progressive Catholic interested on ecumenism here! It's obvious that among the "7 sisters of the Mainstream Protestant" US landscape the schism on the UMC is the most successful of all the current wave. On the other Churches, the schisms were, or too small to count, or the communities and people has dispersed for a multitude of other institutions, or the new bodies are struggling now for some reason, or simply they're even being reverted right now. This was not the case on the UMC. For some reasons, and I?d believe far more than "that" one issue, GMC has come to stay. And not only have they come to stay, but they'll be eventually entering the 10 biggies of the whole US religious landscape sooner rather than later. It should to be noted that there are several congregations still struggling with the disaffiliation process, and/or on their future discernment process. At the end of the day, I believe GMC will be some 6000+ congregations / 3+ million baptized members on, and very few, if any, will return UMC. Same couldn't be said about all the other moderately conservative bodies formed out of the other mainline traditions. One or the other way, they'll all to fail. For some reasons, I believe not "that" one, GMC will be a very interesting case study to have for those like me are interested on such ecumenical developments.

Culturally effective may have been better than relevant. The Gospel is always relevant

Not crazy about the potential ethos you describe. If that happens, I will be disappointed, fearing that we end up just like the UMC, theologically shallow.

I really, really don't like the whole "culturally relevant evangelism" thing even if the motives are sound. Extraordinarily easy to take out of context and abuse as we move forward, and the GMC is by no means immune to infiltrators who are guaranteed to be already at the door at the very least.
