I bought my Tembo Tusk Skottle in 2015 for $125. Still one of the best things I own for outdoor cooking. You take care of it, and it will take care of you. Even at the price point they are today, well worth it!
Its great for certain applications for sure! The new rage these days is the Blackstone, its like a skottle but the surface area burns evenly which i think would be wayyy better than the skottle. The only downside with the blackstone is its not as packable as the skottle. Pros and cons of each :) Glad the video was helpful, Thanks for watching!
You're a smart and creative man. You'll figure it all out. Skottle is an excellent way to cook, and bake. Remember. You don't have to cook everything in the middle. Also season w/oil alot after cleaning to create good cooking surface. It will clean easier and you'll use less butter and or oil to cook as you go. You are absolutely right though. The Tembo is more of a luxury item. It's not a poor man's cooker anymore. Unless they mean you're broke after you buy it.lol I've been watching utube videos on how to make them for 50 on up depending on how nice you want it, and how much skill you have to make it. Might find a better burner as well w/better simmer levels. Removable heating surface becomes over coal fryer or remove to use as extra burner.
Thanks Brian! And yes its definitely a luxury item unless u go broke after buying it lol! I've seen a few videos like that, i'm not the most handy person though so more power to those who can DIY! Thanks for the tip on oiling a lot after cleaning and your right I definitely don't need to use the middle to cook everything (which i do forget lol) Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Glad you found it helpful! Its definitely a fun alternative to camp cooking we love using it when I bring it along. Thanks for watching John! Appreciate it
the Coleman double burner stove will always be the king of car camping imo, but I'll always go with electric options when it's available at campsites to save on fuel.
Agreed! Our Coleman double burner is definitely our go to option 🏕 and I’ve been seeing more people using their air fryers at camp lol I’ll keep that in mind next time we hit a campground with outlets 🤪
I've had a skottle for a bit, and definitely good points on it. Having a wok out on the trail for a large cooking surface is quite nice. I've made philly cheesesteaks and other things on it as it provides a nice large surface for that kind of cooking. It's definitely not the end-all-be-all option for cooking, but it gives good options for different types of food while out.
I had to look it up and it looks like they've definitely improved upon the Tembo! Especially with the legs and I love the table it comes with and also how you can change that disco with other pots which is awesome! Good call on that I would definitely consider buying that one over the Tembo lol let me know how you like it!
I agree with your assessment on the Skottle. Great cooking surface, but I have also found that I have been taking my JetBoil Genesis Base Camp or Partner Steel Stove single burner out more than the TT Skottle. I have found it is a bit cumbersome, takes up lots of room and, relatively speaking, it is heavy.
Yes! I started noticing it was a bit cumbersome to pack after a few months with it (at least in our truck bed setup), good for some food but not everything 👌🏽 thanks for watching Eric!
Yea man I would love to own one but cannot justify the expense. It's funny because I am sitting with my partner watching your video and was like I would accept it as a gift. 😂
It seems like it would be fun to have a the group camp event, but only worth about half what it costs. When does things that I would have to wait for them to get the price way down for me to think it was worth spending on.
Agreed definitely a fun item to have with big group camps but the price is a tough pill to swallow but if you look at other alternative discos (iKamper just released one that is almost $500 but it looks very well worth it and there are a few others i've been around the $200-$300 price range) so I think these in general are just highly priced sadly. I've seen people make their own tho so if you have some DIY skills (which i barely do lol) that may be worth looking into if your interested. Cheers DJ! Thanks for watching
i've had a lot of issues w/ my tembo tusk rusting. e.g., in fall to late spring, i'm not cooking on it much. but pretty much any air moisture rusts it. sometimes bad. so..my question is...do others experience this? how do you clean rust off of it and is there a better alternative to this kind of outdoor cooking that wont rust? e.g i think an enamel coated wok would be great: it would clean easily and not rust.
Hey Steve, thats crazy I havent heard of that but my Tembo has lived in its case since I got it so i'm not sure if thats why I've never seen any rust on mine. I imagine the fix for it is probably similar to cast iron where you can scrap the rust and re-season/coat it with oil (add oil, wipe it off and turn the stove on so it starts heating the oil. you'll see the skottle start smoking a bit while it burns and re-coat the pan. I've done this in the past and usually helps with food sticking). But maybe someone else has seen this and has a solution?
I think its Garlic power (or onion powder) lol they look exactly the same. Give it a shot, super easy and you can use practically anything you have around the house, our breakfast friend rice always changes based on what veggies we got
Thanks for watching DJ! And agreed there are a lot of options out there these days in comparison at the same price point, those blackstones look really promising
I don't disagree! For those DIY'ers it wouldnt be hard for them to create their own but there is versatility in the skottle which I like (grill, steam, pastas, etc) but for this price I dont think i'd buy it for myself (this skottle was a gift). Thanks for watching Chris!
Cool dude although I won’t be spending that kinda money on a cooking item not my thing. Although I’ll just camp with you and get the full experience lol
I like to cook so its been a good addition but man $400 would be a hard pill to swallow for a cooking item lol And yeah bro just come out with me and we'll make good use of it lol
Although you can use metal utensils on cast iron, it's not the first choice. For cleaning: 1. Boil 1/2 cup of water until it burns off and wipe clean 2. When the Skottle is cool, add some table salt (1/4 cup) and use a cloth or folded tinfoil to clean the Skottle (instead of a metal spatula); and 3. Rub in grape seed oil or an oil that can withstand high temperatures with a paper towel. Also, if you follow this process after you use it it will be ready to go the next time.
Well explained. Although all great info. Society today is GETTING LAZY. GREAT ITEMS TAKE GREAT CARE. People have forgotten that value has a price. Part of that price is maintenance.
Hey Robert, no the legs don't fit in the circular bag but the legs really arent that big and can be easily stored anywhere, the circular bag holds everything else though (Skottle, grate, cover, propane, spatula, wind deflector) which is nice
Amazon, they sell the exact same lid for $14, and you can also get a grate for like $7. Seems to me that’s where Tembo Tusk gets theirs from and slaps a sticker on it. Go get me wrong, I love my skottle, but in hind sight, I would’ve got the 18” blackstone.
@@markmedina9245 I've seen the blackstone and I love that setup! I feel like there is more cooking space and an even burn on that setup. And thanks for the tip on the cheaper versions of the grate and lid. Thanks for watching Mark!
Very nice and informative video. This product is terribly over priced and it's design makes it a limited use item. I know from experience that there are much better options out there both in design and price.
Yeah the price is definitely a hurdle with this product and I find myself packing our double burner stove with our cast iron pans more than anything for the versatility of what we can make. Thanks for watching James!
Glad the video was helpful! There are definitely DIY ways to do it if your handy. iKamper also came out with a skottle like product which looks really promising but a bit more expensive then the Tembo
I last used the Skottle just this weekend and no rusting, I've been re-seasoning it with oil and its been doing well (also less sticking too which is great)
I second this comment. In biology we learned that the good fat helps remove the bad fat from your arteries. (HDL vs. LDL) Olive Oil and fatty fish is good for you, too. Enjoyed this video. Thanks!
Thanks Matt, I didnt know that. Everytime I've seen others with the Tembo they always say to treat it like cast iron in terms of no soap, etc. So I just assumed! Thanks for the info!
I dont blame you man! I've seen the blackstone in action, its definitely a better cook top, I think the only thing the Tembo has over the blackstone is the size its easily packable at least in my setup. Thanks for watching Michael!
@@michaelrodriguez2970 I’d have to agree with you, though I did buy one. Only reason I bought it was because I came across one on offer up for $100. The seller advertised it as only used twice and you could tell it probably was only used once. For $100 it’s an awesome deal, albeit hyped but I really love using the thing. Especially knowing the deal I got but I would’ve never paid the hundreds they’re sold for
A few comments 1) you have removed ALL the seasoning from the metal, so you are cooking on bare metal every time. Of course food sticks. The disk should be uniformly dark, almost black when properly seasoned. 2) Oil, like olive oil is not bad for you. 3) Nothing wrong or unhealthy with real butter either.
Thanks for the info! I know I definitely need to re-season it, whats interesting is that the metal was showing pretty much after my first use on it so I just figured it was the normal way it looks? So good to know it should be uniformly dark. And yes I know oil isnt bad for you but if your trying to cut back i've noticed we HAVE to use more oil using the Tembo Tusk vs our other Cast irons. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching! Cheers!
Yes! I actually went through the process of re-seasoning it after this video and it definitely helped with the sticking. I’ll be putting out a video on the process in the future, thanks for watching🤙🏽
The answer is no that is not worth 400. Not even close . You can go to the farm store and buy a disk for 40 bucks propane stove at Walmart for 30. Dig around your garage and make some legs, they are way over priced you could just get a griddle and do the same and have more cooking area
Outstanding review and demonstration. Your honesty is appreciated.
Thanks David! Hope it was helpful! Thanks for watching! Cheers!
out of the 10 reviews I've watched for the skottle this is by far the best... pros and cons are perfect! Thank you.
