They are manufactured in mass somewhere. And they are built for a certain type of people. Everything is short, you have to climb or crawl around the boat. And most of these boats aren't just a work boat, they are also a home to full on families.

Some of the smaller boats would benefit from a bracketed outboard installed as an auxiliary. Throw a 350hp Yamaha on there and it would make it through the gate.
If the boats went through nose to tail, each pushing the one before it, they could overcome the current. The boat stops at the point where prop speed equals water flow speed. A tiny bit more thrust would push it out.

Compared to the main waterway it's close to it's a very small river. The bypass that was dug to build the dam could have been another dam and reduced the chaos of the number of barges going through two gates. I also noticed that the Song Mang Thit river doesn't have a dam because it goes north off the main river and the long dam is preventing the main river from flooding the song lang the river. I didn't understand the geography. I thought it was preventing salt water intrusion from the rising tide. I live in South Louisiana United States. The Mississippi River is the big river here and I live close to a bayou named Lafouch bayou That was open years ago and flooded the area I live in but they damed it off but it's not big enough to be a waterway for boats. Since they damed it off the area isn't getting the sediment filling as it did before it was damed off and is sinking

No se lo que podría costar un motor más potente para las barcazas pero definitivamente sería la solución para muchas de ellas.
