- Learn how to use crutches properly, as well as important nursing information for NCLEX, HESI, and ATI exams.
Assistive devices, such as crutches, canes, and walkers, provide patients with the opportunity to become mobile. As a nurse, it's important to understand the basics about assistive devices.
In this video, you'll learn the following:
-How to use crutches properly
-How to adjust crutches to the proper height (2-3 fingers between armpit and crutch pad, with arm at 30 degrees and handle at around hip line)
-Two-Point Gait Demonstration (2-point gait)
-Three-Point Gait Demonstration (3-point gait)
-Four-Point Gait Demonstration (4-point gait)
-Swing-To Gait
-Swing-Through Gait
How to use crutches on stairs (going up stairs and going down stairs with demonstration)
-How to sit down in a chair with crutches
-How to get out of a chair with crutches
Although this lecture focuses on crutches for nursing student exams such as NCLEX, HESI, and ATI, the information and demonstrations is also relevant to anyone who uses crutches as an assistive device or for those practicing nursing skills, CNA skills, physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation centers, and so forth.

Thank you very much.
Darling, you helped me score a 3 on my ATI Fundamentals exam today. I can’t thank you enough. 2 questions on this video alone. Your videos are such a blessing to me. God bless you and your family!!!
Thank you soooooooooo.. much...
Love you, new subscriber
I was taught to use the prompt GAS when going up ( Gas rises. G = Good leg, A = Affected leg and S = Stick / crutch ). (Sag droops. SAG for going down stairs . S=Sticks/ crutch, A= Affected leg and G = Good leg. It’s a personal choice but I never refer to my left leg as my “bad’ leg - affected works for me and carry’s a hint of hopefulness. ) I fell off my crutches a year ago and broke my tibia on top of septicemia which damaged many of the muscles I need to walk. I started in a wheelchair, then moved to a walker and now I’m hoping to get back on crutches so thank you, thank you, thank you for the hints.
Hey sarah can u plz make a vedio on lift and higher, transfering the client from wheelchair to bed
It is so confusing to just read about this, but to actually see it makes a whole lot of difference. Thank you again and be blessed Nurse Sarah.

Hi Nurse Sarah! I took the exam last June 3, 2023. Got the results yesterday, and passed! I promised myself to leave a comment here after passing. Thank you so much for your videos! I learned a lot! A little background about me: I graduated 16 yrs ago, yr 2007. My first try was last Nov 2022 but failed at 75 items. Now at my 2nd try, I passed at 85 items. I watched some of your videos, along with Simple Nursing videos. Thank you again!

Thank you so much Sarah! This is my last semester in nursing and I have learned and relearned these crutches since Fundamentals but for some reason I kept forgetting the gaits and the order for walking! I wish I would've found this video sooner, but I'm glad I found it now because I think I'll never forget crutches again!
Thank you, as always, for giving us and easy to understand explanation, and live demonstration as well. I was struggling to remember the different kinds of gaits using crutches, but now that I see them, I’ll remember. Thank you 😊 you’re the best 💗👍🏼

You were a virtual instructor in my lab today 😊 I truly didn’t understand why we went to class today they could’ve just sent us your video via email
thank you very much nurse sarah!! this really helps!,,
Thanks for the video. I am a hip replacement patient so I know this was made for nurses, but is is a great teaching so it helps me as well. This is my second hip replacement, but the last was 10 years ago, and it always makes sense to take a "refresher" class sine it is important. My in home PT has given me the OK to go from walker to crutches, so off I go. (don't worry....I will not overdue it :-) ) Thanks for the excellent video!
Really love this couple! A pair perfectly made by Heaven to be a blessing to everyone. Too cute and super lovable! God bless you both! ❤

Going downstairs with crutches looks scary because if they swing then the patient might fall down. I had crutches when I was going downstairs and I almost fell from the second-floor staircase.
I love your hair ❤️❤️
Thx very much
She would look so much like Ariana Grande if her hair and make up were done that way :DD Great video♥
For the stairs I remember "up with the good and down with the bad." I heard it somewhere but forgot where.
