Classic TV Theme: The Doris Day Show

- Poor Doris got roped into doing a tv show she didn't even know about. Her husband/manager had squandered her savings and left her in debt, locking her into a five-year contract to do a sitcom. Being a trooper, she was determined to not just get herself out of debt but to fulfill all five years of the contract.
The show was notorious for all the format changes. Cast members came and went. Season four eliminated her children, their grandfather, and even her dog, without explanation. Doris was now a single woman looking for love. One constant was the theme: 'Que Sera Sera; by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, from Hitchcock's 'The Man Who Knew Too Much'...one of her finest big screen roles. The arrangements varied from year to year, and the visuals were constantly refreshed to reflect the changes in the show's cast and premise. Season five was the first time the opening titles weren't changed from the year before, only to suddenly change 2/3 of the way through the season to incorporate an even longer stretch of Doris modeling fashions (a peculiar thing to emphasize given that her on-screen job was magazine writer). Enjoy all five sets of opening titles (and a few closing credits as well). It's a trip into the past, since the future's not ours to see.
My Mom use to sing this song if she was doing the dished, or cooking... Back in the very early 1960's. I wish those days could come back. I sure do miss my mom and dad, my kid brother, and all my Grandmas, Aunts, uncles, cousins. 🥰💗
The 1960's when life was so much nicer and a lot more normal than it is now.
I feel you. It was so much better back then.
we had a Democratic Republic back then.@@jacobrivers5728
i hear you bud...i miss them too...my family that is...
My mom sang it too, the same way as yours.
I always loved that spiral staircase. Almost bought a house with one in it.
One interesting point to make: Denver Pyle, who played Doris' father, was actually only TWO years older than her!
2 years that's all? you're not kidding either are you?
John who?
@@perrywatson8505 John Denver Pyle, often referred to as J.D.
That checks out. Nice fact! Doris almost made it to 100, dying at 97 years old.
An absolutely beautiful and brilliant lady sadly missed !!!!!
R.I.P
Doris Day
1922 - 2019
We’ll miss you T^T
I remember this when l was a kid Beautiful show they don’t make them like this any more.🙋♂️
Doris Day was so very beautiful and such a wonderful actress.
I wish I could be this happy driving.
Never really watched it at the time but I remember her doing hopscotch on the streets of San Francisco.
Seasons 4 and 5 truly tried to be like The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
True that. But the Mary Tyler Moore show had better writers and a much more talented ensemble cast.
That's because, up until 1970, the Doris Day Show was not competing with MTM. After 1970, it was. Particularly for female-led TV series, the early 70s was a transition from 60s women as either housewives (or widowed) mothers to single career women with no kids. The DDS plot & cast changes simply evolved with the trend. Single working women Eve Arden ("Our Miss Brooks"), Lucy ("The Lucy Show") & Marlo Thomas ("That Girl") had already blazed the trail for DD & MTM series, although the earlier series' cast the leads in traditionally female occupations. MTM was the first hit series where Mary was occupying a traditionally male role as a TV news Executive Producer.
@@lbputzer Getting off the subject. I think Ann Romano from One Day At A Time was the 1 of the 1st divorced women on TV.
@@good03boy Over a decade earlier, Vivian Bagley (Vivian Vance) of "The Lucy Show" was not only divorced, but the way she spoke derogatorily about her ex, "George", was a running gag on the show. It could be argued, though, that Viv was a "sidekick", whereas Romano was the principle character of the series..
@@good03boy No, Vivian Vance was the first divorced woman. On "The Lucy Show"
I really lost sympathy for her character when she cruelly put both her kids up for adoption to pursue a career in high fashion in San Francisco at the age of 50, and never said a word about them again.
Huh?
And even worse is what happened to the dog!
@@MargDBX I think he is being facitious.
This show would also work if she was a serial killer.
On the Lucy show, she "lost" her kids too after a few seasons
Watching this show by credits would make you think it's a long-form story about a woman who slowly dumps her family and friends so she can live out her fantasies as a fashion model.
Yup. Dumps the farm , her friends and family to become a fashion model for a major department store
That is exactly what happened over the 5 seasons. If you watched a first season episode and a last season episode you wouldn’t believe they are from the same show.
Amazing that CBS got one of the hottest stars around to do a TV series for them but then didn't know what to do with her. Perhaps the thinking was. "It's Doris Day, people will watch anyway." and they weren't too far off.
If I remember correctly, Doris was committed to the show without her knowledge by her late husband. She didn't really want to do it but had to because he had left her so in debt. Then she and her son worked to try to salvage what of the show they could.
I remember thinking at the time “wow, CBS has Doris Day and NBC nabbed Rock Hudson”. Who would’ve guessed they would be on TV in the early 1970s.
Damn it this almost brings a tear to my Rusty ass at 61 sad but true
"AGGIE!! What is that?!" If you know, you know.
Edward H. Feldman was also producing "Hogan's Heroes."
Another interesting fact is that Charles Manson was after her real life son, Terry Melcher, because he rejected recording Manson’s songs.
First season credited the dog Lord Nelson, who was the same dog from the TV series Please Don't Eat the Daisies. Huh.... 😂😂
The first 3 seasons, before they updated and changed all the cast, were SO MUCH better!! I didn't like the last two seasons.
I remember watching this show for a couple of seasons, but as someone else pointed out, they couldnt figure out what the basic line of plot cast should be from one season to the next. I wish i could afford to buy the red Plymouth 'Cuda convertible she drove in some of the opening scenes down California Street.
I loved this show and Doris Day ❤
رحم الله أبي كنا نتفرج على هذا المسلسل سوية قبل سنوات عديدة ..
📺👀👍
Qué sera sera ❤️j love you Mary 😘 it's Wonderful 💕
It was a surprise to me when they re-released the remake of "The Man Who Knew Too Much" that this song originated there and was a integral plot device for the movie.
I wanted to hear the song and I got the show got it brings back some long time little bitty kid memories
La mia mamma che ballava in cucina con questa canzone ❤❤❤
Thanks for this❤️
SF is my town
I want an Old English Sheep dog!!!!!
Corniest intro ever. 😂
ARCHIE BUNKERS FAVORITE SHOW
Archie to Louise Jefferson: How's you like the Julia show last night? Louise: Fine! How you like Doris Day? Remember that from All In The Family?
So white and wonderful for white people.
IKR!!!!….....all in its glorious whiteness.
Yes, we do like it. But unlike shows for people of other colors, we let those other colors watch it accusing them of cultural appropriation.
какой ужас
