Ken Colyer and his Handpicked Jazzmen: Ken Colyer (tp), "Jumping" Jack Gilbert (cl), Mike Sherbourne (tb), "Gentleman" Jim McIntosh (bj), Ray Holland (b), Tony Scriven (dm).
Marvellous that Ken's music is still available and enjoyed. Grew up with Barber, Ball and Colyer. My memories are so clear still, but every time I listen, I discover new little bits and pieces. Thank you so much. Recommend you listen to Ken's wonderful version of "Postman's Lament" which will (hopefully) increase your appreciation of the wonderful musician, Kind regards,
Ken Colyer was one of the high standard band leaders that formed the basis of "Trad Jazz" as we got to know it. Weren't we blessed living during that time!
SINCE CLUB SESSION WITH COLYER I WAS HOOKED I LOVE THIS GUY PLAYING TRUMPET MYSELF I GET WHERE HE IS COMING FROM THAT TONE AND USE OF HI HAT MUTES YOU CAN PICK HIM OUT ANYTIME GREAT PLAYER R. I. P. KEN
A long time ago I was having a drink with Jack Gilbert. The phone rang - get to the George, Morden, Ken needs a clarinet and banjo. We had to get a taxi (from Surbiton) as we were both pissed as farts. We got there and did the gig. My memory was Winter Wonderland - Ken I don’t know it. Now’s your fucking chance to learn it! I also remember Tony Scriven’s drumming - the best in the world!!!
Yes I agree entirely with popeyepaul1. I wasn't there at the George in Morden for these series of gigs but the CD from which this is taken is definitely one of Ken's best. The late (and much lamented) Jack Gilbert was one of the best clarinettists Ken ever engaged .....and he engaged many (Sunshine, Bilk, Wheeler, Rimington and a number of others I cannot bring to mind). Magic NOLA jazz from start to finish!
Colyer as good as ever, and also Jumping Jack Gilbert on clarinet. He played mainly in Max Collie's band - possibly later than this recording. Likewise, Gentleman Jim Mackintosh - a lovely lilting player. If I've got my dates right, 1972 Ken had given up his regular touring band for health reasons.
Just before the George at Morden closed for jazz. Ken tried for a few weeks to revive it with his hand picked jazzmen but sadly it had to close... some of the best jazz I have heard in those few weeks but sadly hardly anyone there.
Fantastic era to grow up in, loved all the trad jazz greats from those years-literally this is music to my ears at 85 years old.
Very good stuff
Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk! A legend in N'Awlins, Lousianna. USA. Blow that horn bonny boy!!
The young should be made to listen to Jazz masters. What a legacy!!
Fond memories in my student days at El Pi Island and his London Jazz Club.😊

The trombonist in the pictures from 1.56 to 2.35 is my uncle Peter.
