The only console I have out of the current Gen is a Switch. I'm still saving up money to get an OG Xbox, 360 and PS2 before I even think about getting any more new consoles.
I currently have a Xbox one, PS4, Wii and Gameboy. I used to have a Xbox 360, PS1 and PSP but no longer do. Technically I've still got the PSP but it's broke.
I can think of two other reason the PS2 was very successful. First off, it was the cheapest DVD player at the time of its release, which enticed a lot of non-gamers to buy it (eventually they also started playing games on it as well). Another is that between the discontinuation of the Dreamcast in March 2001 and the release of the Gamecube in September 2001, there was a five month window where PS2 was the only 6th generation console available, which allowed Sony to accumulate more sales during this time.
@@jackmeoff9299 At that time, games are everything, I had PS2 then and if I had to choose again, I would choose PS2 again, because it had the most and the best games. Back then even 3rd party games were exclusive from Capcom, Square-Enix, Konami, Rockstar and many others that were not available on any other platform. When I think of 2001 only when Xbox and GC came out for comparison and also compared to today crazy how many excellent game (Ico, Silent Hill 2, Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy 10, Jak and Daxter, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Onimusha, SSX Tricky, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Ace Combat 4, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, Grand Theft Auto III) all this in one year and almost all PS2 exclusives, later some also came to Xbox. This is the reason GAMES, not the power of the console.
@@sjuric2435 I actually owned the Dreamcast the PS2 and the Xbox I purchased them all when they came out absolutely loved the Dreamcast because it truly mimicked arcade quality graphics but unfortunately it lacked 3rd party support I felt the PS2 was a failure because it was more powerful than the Dreamcast but unfortunately much of the rendering it did lacked quality in the Dreamcast usually had a sharper and nicer picture and hands down the Xbox was King with a phenomenal game lineup I still own a fully Modded Xbox with every game ever made for Xbox on it including thousands of others I also still have my Dreamcast but I no longer have a PS2
@@jackmeoff9299 I've never had a Dreamcast, but the PS2 was stronger and quite a lot. Especially in games that printed a lot of physics and geometry like MGS2, Jak and Daxter, Shadow of Colossus, etc. Later games improved the picture quality a lot on the PS2 when they started to come with 480p support. There were also a lot of myths that the PS2 doesn't have or uses anti-aliasing, the truth is that none of those consoles used anti-aliasing in games because it was too demanding for the consoles of that time, including the Xbox, even though it is supported by hardware like the Gamecube. What the PS2 lacked was mipmapping, so the games had that characteristic PS2 look. Last week I read on the Beyond3d forum why the Game Cube never got a Burnout 3 port because it's CPU couldn't handle the game, first of all collisions and car geometry were hard to deal with on GC CPU and the game depends on a smooth 60fps. Interesting read, I didn't know that.
The PS2 was also the cheapest DVD player on the market so that helped drive the sales numbers up. Why would people buy a normal DVD player when you can buy a cheaper one that also plays video games? Sony had the perfect set up with the PS2.

I go PS and Nintendo (except I skipped Wii U), so I am not really familiar with Xbox. But I am sometimes curious to get it, for the game pass (if you think that’s worth it?). Other than that, what makes you go Xbox over PS? Is 3rd party quality just slightly better than on PS, or is there more to it?

the Xbox Series X seems like a better system due to better backwards compatibility. Sony on the other hand cheaped out and decided gamestreaming for PS1, PS2 and PS3 games was ok. it's hilarious that the PS3 could run PS1 and PS2 games (PS2 taken out in later models) but the PS5 cannot run PS1 or PS2 games and instead has to rely on streaming.
It’s hilarious that xbots buy a brand new console to play old games they can already play and think is a better console because of it. Hey tell that to the PS4 which sold over twice as much as the Xbox one also the switch which already outsold the Xbox one as well and both don’t have backwards compatibility.
@@H.E.M. The ability to play older games is good for those looking to go play older games for systems they may not even own, I had a PS2 yeah, but it broke, what do I do now? buy another PS2 or go for a system that gives me an official alternative for running PS2 games, and you gotta remember it's an inevitability that the original systems will fail, so backwards compatibility is a necessity for game perseveration, otherwise we'll be stuck with just emulating games on PC which has questionable legalities behind the ROMs. the Xbox One is a better Metal Gear Solid gaming system than the PS4, and that sounds horribly wrong. there's no excuse for why the PS5 cannot run the PS1 or PS2, the PS3 can do it, and its definitely way weaker than the PS5, oh and there's no excuse for the PS5 being unable to run PS3 games, yeah I could own a real PS3 and PS2, or shrink my setup down with 1 system that can run every previous Playstation system, heck the PS5 isn't even perfect with its PS4 backwards compatibility, which is just terrible. I'm no serious microsoft fan (in fact I hate Microsoft for ruining online multiplayer for console gaming) but at least Microsoft is actually making an effort to make it easier to play older games from previous systems, unlike the lazy fucks at Sony. and what if I'm a new fan to a system? like I moved from Xbox to playstation 5 and wanted to play an old Playstation exclusive game? well I'm shit outta luck unless we get an HD port or collection.
I've owned every console that's come out since the PlayStation 2. The console Wars are fun but honestly I hope none of these companies stop making consoles. I just also got a switch Lite as well. Hopefully I don't get joy con drift. Video games are fucking life.
You know as a kid i enjoyed both systems and know the ps2 has an insanely large library but now as an adult and a collector, i actually think the xbox games aged better and prefer its exclusive library over the ps2 on the whole
Im on the opposite side. I have both but I collect heavily for the Ps2 now. Playing Ps2 games in 1080i GSM in widescreen on a 50inch HDTV with wireless ps4 controller is life lol
I liked both. PS2 had a way larger library and still received some form of support over a decade after its release. Xbox was pretty much better in every other department though. The graphics/framerate, Xbox Live (which was innovative for its time), internal hard drive, better controller imo (the S version anyway), suspension triggers, and the ability to copy music from CDs. However PS2 had the advantage of not requiring a particular remote and receiver for playing DVDs.
Am I the only person watching him play a game ALONE in a bedroom wearing a mask? Reminds me of the people I see driving down the street alone with a mask on. LMAO!
My argument has changed alot over the years. PS2 was the console I have probably played the most in my lifetime and I must say the Xbox running games on my modern television in 720p and basically the ENTIRE library in 480p just makes them way more playable than the like 10 games capable of 480p on ps2 😂
Not really into the whole console war. I have owed every PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo all the way back to the NES. Each one brought something unique to the table. Crap, I remember playing my dad’s Atari!

Great video. Looking forward to next gen. Just a slight correction, metal gear solid 3 never got released on xbox though MGS 2 did. MGS 3 got re-released on ps2 as metal gear solid 3 subsistence.
The reason the controller was so big is because Sony blocked them from buying parts so they had to make their own circuit boards which was another way Sony tried to sabotage them
That's why I use a Logitech PS2 controller, dualshock has the weird angled handles and makes my hands cramp up, especially if a game requires the double L and R buttons to play.
This generation was the weird one where each controller was very similar and different at the same time. I prefer the layout of the ps2, but I love the overall feel of the xbox S controller. But the black, white, start and back buttons were in a weird position. Also I went through so many controllers because of one manufactering flaw. Over time, the red cable would get strained over time. Until it becomes so damaged, that the controller would constantly disconnect The gamecube controller was there. I don't get the praise

Jeez how did you miss the DVD player lol. That was the biggest reason it sold astronomical numbers
Eddie Hoo DVD player was the selling point for kids to convince parents to buy it. More than a gaming system.
@@zzygyy man I know I used it as a bargaining chip lol!
No, the biggest reason was the hype from the ps1, which sold 100m units,
@@MemeMaster-gz7nk you obviously weren't alive back then. No, it being a the cheapest DVD player was the biggest reason it sold 50 million more than any other console
@@EddiXP yes dvd players we're expensive and it was a huge selling point, however it wasn't the greatest reason for the ps2 success. You really think right after the first one sold 100 million the second wouldn't have more?
I never had an XBOX but i had the PS2 and it was a great console. That time my family didn't have a lot of money and we were lucky to be able to get one, but i think it was the slimmer model of the PS2. SO MUCH NOSTALGIC moments of those years :) Kevin, thank you for showing how much those times WERE GREAT!! :)
yeah. i'ma need more of this retro-gaming content from you fam.
Such an amazing video (insert blown mind emoji here) for many many reasons. The main thing that stood out was how well it was cut together. Creating that cohesive narrative with all the other gaming creators in there was really impressive (love collabs like that). Second best Kev video of all time, only because the greatest Kev video of all time is (of course) "Thanks Nintendo."
15:42 - MGS3 never made it to the original Xbox, unless i'm misunderstanding and you're referring to the later HD collection? Sorry to nitpick! Video is really well done, loved the editing too!
2 and 3 both came to Xbox under the substance titles. Great games.
@@richardwatson5730 On Xbox 360 yes, via the HD Collection. Only MGS2 Substance arrived on the OG Xbox though. Snake Eater/Subsistence never arrived on the OG Xbox.
And agreed! Replaying MGS3 currently. Still remember MGS2's demo on the PS2 that came with ZoE!
@@mrratchet I remember seeing a cardboard cutout that advertised 3 on Xbox and PC as well. Then they had to retract the Xbox logo and Kojima said it was a mistake and he never intended to put it on Xbox. Don’t remember what happened to the PC version.
can we just appreciate the work that went into this video
For their first console, how unbelievable was the xbox?
Awesome!
I saw the original Xbox but up screen on the Xbox one backwards compatibility and a stream of emotions and memories hit me hard, definitely was a special time to play games
I personally think this was the greatest console generation of all time
Agree
@Foaad Hisham I can also agree with that because i had a wii and a 360 they were also great
What about the ps2 dvd capabilities? That was a HUUUUGE selling point
Xbox had DVD playback as well, but I’m pretty sure you needed an add on to play DVD movies and music. Correct me if I’m wrong
@jackthegamer
No, you needed an add-on.
It was small and it plugged in the front, and I owned one.
@@IBrokeMySpaceKey yeah it had that kit, reason why it’s separate because it would’ve made the Xbox more expensive.
The whole console war thing is not my thing tbh for me i love all consoles plus console wars are just immature gamers

I've always had both the only difference is the exclusives
3:17 IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK BILL🤣🤣🤣 it gets me every time, the rock in 2001 was pure gold
And now, it's playstation Vs game pass
I think it’s more of PlayStation vs Xbox, XCloud, GamePass, and PC at this point.
@@stinkynacho2362 nope it's actually PlayStation vs streaming
I disagree Microsoft is competing with Netflix so...
Since when was movies and TV shows even remotely similar to video games?
The movie and video game markets are two completely different markets
@Sonic the hedgehog Ummmm, the Xbox consoles still exist tho? We’re not there yet buddy 😂
I love every console ! I always get all of them , they all have something to offer , from Sony and Nintendo games to Xbox and PC combo , I play my Xbox most ,I work in HVAC and I get home really late and sometimes I just don't wanna deal with PC problems , sometimes I feel like I troubleshoot and move slider more than playing ! even tho my PC is pretty beefy is just a drawback . So having a Xbox that plays games pretty good makes it my go to 3rd party machine ! Sony makes amazing games !!! And Nintendo has I believe better games than sony 🤩. In conclusion they are all great !
In conclusion: Nintendo has the best 1st party games, PlayStation the best 3rd party games and XBOX/PC the best quality.
Luis Cruz Maybe there is something up with my brother’s Xbox One, but whenever we play it has to do an update or download that takes at least a half hour. And before that you have to sign in, confirm it with another device, etc etc. Kinda sounds like the annoying troubles you go through with PC. Is there a way to not deal with this on Xbox?
I go PS and Nintendo (except I skipped Wii U), so I am not really familiar with Xbox. But I am sometimes curious to get it, for the game pass (if you think that’s worth it?). Other than that, what makes you go Xbox over PS? Is 3rd party quality just slightly better than on PS, or is there more to it?
Jehnsy93 I hope you don’t mind reading my above comment, I would like to hear your thoughts/opinions too. If not though that’s okay, I know I wrote quite a bit.
@@mikesstuff007 I have a simple solution. I buy all the single player games that are available on Switch on the system but all the multiplayer games on PC. Exception for non demanding multiplayer games like Rocket League. But if you don't care about portability (what's wrong with you😝) go for PC/XBOX ONE.
very rich very rich.... got it, got it.. ai ai sir, please send me you old consoles, would help
Really amazing Video. You can feel that this was made with love, great editing, great research and a fantastic vibe to the video. Definetly deserves more views
I completely stopped paying attention to the video when I realized the background music was Gungor’s “Walking With Our Eyes Closed” lol

We played Halo almost every single day.

Only thing is halo infinite running on series x hasn't been seen by any of the public
I love learning about the past. This was great! I’m sure this took a huge amount of time to produce. I hope you do many more videos like this
A lot of the reasons PlayStation sells really well is because of the exclusives
And because of the success of ps1, the first console built up hype for the next
@@demonetization1455 ya I can get behind that as well
Kevin, this is your best Video. Hats off my guy! ✅
Xbox live, 4 controller ports, hardrive that you could burn music into and play during some games. OG Xbox is my all time favorite. Still have mine from high school.
Honestly, each platform has their own games that I really love, (especially Nintendo) but Xbox will always be special to me, with it's vastly superior Online Services in comparison to PlayStation. I made so much more memories on my Xbox 360, had so much fun, and made so many friends, and the PS3 really just had great campaign titles for me.
The original xbox was modifiable where you didn't need to buy games you just loaded them onto your hard drive. Need for speed underground, most wanted, starwars battlefront 2 mortal kombat shaolin monks many great games. It was dope.
The editing and effects in this video are really good.
I'm actually excited about the new PS5 controller
Wow one of you best videos ever, you should talk about old consoles in a series
Love this production style Kevin. Really works well with this retrospective format. Really really well done 👍
Watch all your stuff Kevin, i never comment. I needed to on this one. I love your production value. The music, the graphics, the B-roll's. Top not work man!
Let me also add that all your content is high qaulity! This one just stood out for me.
the Xbox Series X seems like a better system due to better backwards compatibility.
@@WednesdayMan backwards compatibility is a nice feature and it's always good to have but it's not necessary for consoles success.
@@jayarcher3331 first off, you're right that it is good to have, you're wrong on the part where it isn't necessary for consoles.

I miss these days I grew up with the n64 and ps2
Truly an underrated youtuber with amazing content which is unbiased.
I've owned every console that's come out since the PlayStation 2. The console Wars are fun but honestly I hope none of these companies stop making consoles. Xbox has been my staple but recently I got a PlayStation Vita and I got very interested in PlayStation games. Now I have a PlayStation 4 which I use the Vita for remote play. I just also got a switch Lite as well. Hopefully I don't get joy con drift. Video games are fucking life.
No clue why I'm so late. Thought I had already watch...this video is SO dope! Man these ones don't get enough look. Great great work Kevin
I grew up playing the PlayStation 2 but as I got older I liked the OG Xbox more then the PlayStation 2
Man I had like 1200 song downloaded to my OG Xbox and never got close to maxing they memory dam that was the best
PS2 was the console I have probably played the most in my lifetime and I must say the Xbox running games on my modern television in 720p and basically the ENTIRE library in 480p just makes them way more playable than the like 10 games capable of 480p on ps2 😂
xbox had better graphics but ps2 had better games

Gta san andreas. The og xbox had more loaded into the environment( trees, bushes, people, vehicles) and looked slighty sharper than the ps2 version.
The PS2 had crazy exclusives but the Xbox was so ahead of its time in terms of graphics and performance.

The reason the controller was so big is because Sony blocked them from buying parts so they had to make their own circuit boards which was another way Sony tried to sabotage them

Agree. Microsoft brought everything to revolutionize gaming. Hard Disk, XBOX LIVE, Wireless Controllers, Achievements and so more
I hate dual shock but ps1 and ps2 dominated by such a margin that you cannot just ignore theses machines.
That's why I use a Logitech PS2 controller, dualshock has the weird angled handles and makes my hands cramp up, especially if a game requires the double L and R buttons to play.
@@PaperBanjo64 to me it's more the stick positions, i prefer the xbox controller, but of course you can't play ps2 with an xbox controller 😄
Until it becomes so damaged, that the controller would constantly disconnect
The gamecube controller was there. I don't get the praise
