Weaver was guaranteed $1.2 million plus 75% of the gate, while Dokes got $400,000.
Dokes was a 3-1 favorite.
There was a capacity crowd of about 4,500 at the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion.
When Dokes entered the ring, he threw six red roses to the crowd.
Dokes went right at Weaver, a notoriously slow starter, from the opening bell. Twenty seconds into the fight, Dokes staggered Weaver with a left hook and then dropped him with a follow-up hook. Weaver got up quickly and did not appear to be badly hurt. After taking the mandatory eight count, Weaver covered up on the ropes and Dokes went for the knockout. At the 1:03 mark, referee Joey Curtis stopped the fight. The crowd began to boo and then chant "Bullshit! Bullshit!" and "Fix! Fix!" Meanwhile, a brawl broke out in the ring between the two camps. Dokes had demanded the championship belt that Weaver had worn into the ring, and Weaver's brother swiped at Dokes, precipitating the chaos. The brawling camps and the crowd's growing disgruntlement persuaded ring announcer Chuck Hull that it would be best if he didn't announce the TKO, and he left the arena.
Dokes fell to the canvas as he celebrated the win, injuring himself in the process.
Curtis was chosen as the referee the morning of the fight at a meeting of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Curtis said they discussed Deuk-Koo Kim at the meeting, the Korean lightweight who died the previous month after a championship fight with Ray Mancini. "Kim was all they stressed at that meeting," he said. "And Kim was always in the back of my head." A day later, Ray Tennison, executive secretary of the commission, said, "I think the ref overreacted because of all the safety talk."
Dr. Donald Romeo, the ringside physician, said, "They shouldn't have stopped it. The referee was wrong. Weaver was fine. The fact is he's just a notoriously slow starter."
HBO commentator Sugar Ray Leonard said the referee "panicked."
The WBA ordered a rematch. - Спорт
Shame Larry Holmes’ mic wasn’t on. He knows the sport, especially as a heavyweight.
First off I miss Larry Merchant. This was probably the best thing for Michael Weaver. Yes it was stopped prematurely but I don’t think Dokes would have walked away a winner. It’s unfortunate but I would say the fans got screwed on this one.
Compare Dokes's physical condition here with how he came in for the rematch; it was night and day.
Seems referees where probably defensive after what had happened months before when the Ray Mancini Duk Ko Kim bout ended in tragedy.
That's why I'm here
That was a beautiful left hook by Dokes that dumped Weaver. His hands were a blur, almost like a 215lb Meldrick Taylor. Terrible stoppage though. Weaver clearly had his faculties and was simply defending himself quite effectively waiting for the blitz to die down.
Exactly. Would have loved to see weavers comeback after dokes punched himself out.
Let it go a little further after the knockdown? Like he was doing weaver a favor, he was up at 1 and steady on his feet, whats the ref talking about? The ref totally blew it.
Horrible stoppage
Wonder how much the ref was payed to stop the fight
Turns out referee Joey Curtis had ties with the Gambino crime family, he also did the exact same thing the previous year (1981) in a Lupe Pintor fight.
Poor Mike Weaver, got really screwed here as well as the paying crowd, Highway robbery I say.
Pre-mature maybe but Weaver didn't answer getting mauled by Dokes..you got to fight back..Standing there taking it leaves it to the Ref to decide if your in this fight and are they going to carry you out on a stretcher..Weaver had nothing to stop Dokes from that beating
Just referee... don't judge.
Need anudder referree
Walks like a fix, talks like a fix… it’s probably a fix. When they met again that became more obvious.
