My aunt died last summer and left her 1991 LV 55 duffle to me. This bag means the world to me because it came from one of my dear aunts. The duffle is still in awesome condition because of superior craftsmanship.

I can reassure you that no leather product will hold as well as the Louis Vuitton canvas. Leather breaks down with time but the canvas doesn’t. And seen as the world is moving more towards leather alternatives, I seriously think everyone should be more open-minded to this alternative as it’s a pretty good alternative material.
@@stephanieknowsbest Canvas doesn't break down, but if it does, you can't refurbish it. Leather, on the other hand, you can refurbish. Give it a good wax, and it looks as good as new. The LV is good as a status symbol, but it doesn't seem practical. You want to be able to take it on a beach in Sicily and then to the snowy Alps in Switzerland.
It is the way to write themselves out of any responsibility for any complaints, when the bag is worn and torn. I would buy a beautiful leather bag from Kero if I had that money. Two or three bags at least now that I think of it, and a nice pair of boots probably.

Wow, that was an eye opener. I have to say that I never paid much attention the LV products, as this video points out, I always saw their products as a common, if expensive, way of saying "I spend a lot of money in this bag". I think that a refined product should hide it's brand name not advertise it and yet I never thought that those expensive logo bags were made of vinyl! Vinyl?!?! A $2000 dollar vinyl bag? That is marketing at it's very best(/worst?). I honestly always thought that LV were over price but still quality products. Thank you for this video. That or this becomes a rather nice business writeoff. Besides, there is a nice aftermarket of people purchasing that material to repurpose them into other products. That said, I've never been particularly impressed with the quality of LV products.
It's canvas and leather. Nothing is as durable and fabulous. Pure quality. People throw away more money in cheap purses than I have in these. They are indestructible and no one cares if they look worn.

I once dated a girl who freaked out because she was carrying a $3k Vuitton bag and had me hold it instead of setting it down on the floor of a train station. Wish I had known about this video then -- but besides that, there's plenty of video evidence on YT of leathermakers calling out Vuitton and other designer brands (Tom Ford, Gucci, et al.) for knowingly marking up products that have substandard workmanship.

I dunno about you fellas, but I live in Italy so I have access to some very good leather artisans in my town, if you do too (wherever you live), buy from them and support them, I'm sure whicever country you reside in they make leather items AT LEAST on par if not much better than big brands and possibly even cheaper :)

I don’t know why this guy has such a negative view on the bag, because the material is awesome! It holds well and you can wear it in the rain without worrying. Just get the canvas material but in damier so you don’t have to worry about the vachetta leather, and you’ll be able to use the bag anywhere, and for ages.

Not worth it, as I expected. I always appreciate an honest and unbiased review that's based on the quality of the product rather than the name attached to it. The leather bag showed in the video also looks a lot nicer than the LV bag if you ask me
no bag of real leather should be that expensive... unless its alien leather Louis Vuitton also burns their unsold bags. so they don't have to sell it for lower prices... if they are willing to do that. it sure isn't worth any value.
The reason the exterior of the bags are made of cotton backed PVC is for durability. This fabric was originally a replacement for the waxed cotton canvas of the earlier trunks. You state that Leather is more durable but that's just false. PVC is waterproof, and longevity wise will outlast leather if heavily used. However Louis Vuitton is famous for the trunks, and this canvas was developed for that application. Keepalls of recent years have certainly declined in construction, older bags used authentic non coated brass but over time this will oxidize and stain the vachetta leather. The canvas used to be thicker, the leather was thicker and the hardware was better quality. They changed in the early 1990s to suit increasing demand and restructured their factories. Nevertheless you mention Goyard as a "superior" Luxury item but they too are made of PVC canvas with leather handles, so paying 3x as much for the same type of item i'd say thats terrible advice. Louis Vuitton does of course make full leather bags, they are more expensive but are indeed high quality items. The top end of the brand is still the trunks and hardcase items but in the modern world they simply are not practical and usually end up as decorative items. In terms of a modern keepall i'd have to agree with your assessment.
I don't have anything against the fashion industry. But to see a company built from innovation evolve into one that just leans on its name to sell cheap products makes me sad...
I notice more and more companies over the years have fallen by the wayside. When they started having China make their goods. Now many of the brand name companies are just selling products with their cheap embossed or silver plated brand emblem and not worth basically anything.
I own 7 Louis Vuitton bags which I bought back in the early ‘90’s. They have been beaten, shot, dragged, driven over (don’t ask) and dunked in a river... they’ve been used as bags, pillows, seats and foot stools. They are still in excellent condition and I have received ridiculous offers to buy them. Not interested as they are my travel and hunting history when I was young. They are excellent with extraordinary quality. Sadly, Louis Vuitton is now nothing more then a expensive department store. When I purchased my bag ensemble there were no sunglasses, no shoes, definitely no bloody sneakers, no clothing, no watches. The company has definitely changed for the worse. I will still adore my LV bags though. They are my constant traveling companions.

It was hellishly expensive. Bags, given the time value of money, are cheaper today. Back then they were only made in France... I believe.
JOHN RIESLING LV (monogram) bags have been made out of canvas since the day they were made. So no.... the canvas is for weight. When empty, they are extremely light.

Henrik John personally, I find items that aren’t genuine leather are much better and worth your money because they can be used more safely. For example, a leather coat isn’t very useful in the snow because, well, leather and water don’t mix. But a faux leather coat is much more useful and still looks great

I bought a full leather travel bag from Debenhams for £100, cant express how happy i am with the overall quality vs the price. I dont give a toss about status, what im looking for is a bag which costs less, looks good and lasts longer.
hi there, just to slightly disagree about the price, because this bag is very durable, it can last for a long time, and if it gets any wear-tear, they can fix it without charging you . as the canvas is actually 7 layers of fabric pressed, plus it saves you a lot of storage because it can be folded flat without creating crease when you want to store it, because you supposed to get this bag for traveling, also you don't want to put your luxury bag on the floor :) lastly the handle is hand-stitch and with the time the color turns into the patina color dark brown something that the imitation bags they don't do that.. overall very good review

I was contemplating getting my wife a LV bag for Christmas but considering it is mostly canvas and pvc, and all of those care caveats there is no way I will now. I think I have 5 or 6 keep all’s. Some canvas monogram. Some all leather, one shiny mirror polish and a couple of one off’s. Like I said. I lost track. I use them when I feel like it. Sometimes for daily errands. But I used them a lot when I used to go to the gym. Excellent gym bags. I don’t travel with them. I have a wheeled duffel bag for that that has a slot for my rolling luggage. Just easier that way for real travel. I also have LV luggage. But never fly with them. Unless it is private. Nothing like the airline ‘losing’ your $10,000 suitcase. My main daily carry is either my LV Epi leather briefcase (with shoulder strap) or my Tumi backpack. I need neither in this digital age. But it’s the only ‘unnecessary’ thing I like to lug around to and from the office.

You are absolutely right on the money concerning this bag and most of what Vuitton makes. I am French and I am not ashamed to say that Louis Vuitton is poor quality sold at premium prices. The cost of the bag is probably no more than 5% of the selling price. The only value of this kind of items is bragging rights for undiscriminating egomaniacs.

Bought the 55 Waterproof model and Ghurka leather keepall, some years ago. Sold the Ghurka in eBay after some time, because too heavy (at a heavy loss). LV is more lighter and is still doing fine after taking a beating in heavy rain. @Andi Goldberg is correct. My LV was made in Germany. By the way, I have a LV tambour that went into a washing machine along with my jogging pants by mistake. Still ticking :). Informative video, though. Thanks.

Pleased to see your frank review. I feel your existing dark leather carry bag looks great and will probably look good for generations. I personally, have found a custom manufacture in Bali, Indonesia, that have made a few bags to my extremely specific design, materials, stitching and fittings I have used for 5 years and still perform great, look fantastic and will do so for decades. I love having things custom made and paying the person that does the stitching. The only caution is to COMMUNICATE your wishes to the craftsman (same as with a tailor) and make clear that you are happy to pay for the time needed to achieve the results required. You can get some great items for very reasonable prices. Another bonus is you are providing work to a craftsman that he/she can be proud of while not supporting counterfeiters. 20 years ago I observed a Bag Lady with a LV over her shoulder, I gave her a few dollars and vowed never to own LV or any other exposed branded product, if anything is to be on display, it the craftsmanship.

I think the fabric of the Monogram and Damier canvas is Kevlar. The yellow stitching of the calf leather is coated with beeswax. If you want to review a LV leather item, they offer products in Epi leather, Taiga leather and calf leather.
I had this bag bought for me as a gift . It’s lovely , the needle works is amazing. I know it’s only part leather but I do adore it . I wouldn’t buy it myself but people do comment on it when ever I us it. I think a fair price would be more like £400
FYI - brass is a metal alloy as well - usually a blend of copper and zinc (both being “metals”) :) Not only flawed, but this video was a pretty narrow minded opinion piece. It would suit your otherwise good image to interview an expert in LV and why certain materials are chosen. Alcantara is a polymer and more resistant than its leather counterpart suede. Yes, the margin on LV goods must be huge which is why it is one of the wealtiest companies in Europe, but its items hold for years and piece are passed down in the families and you get back most of your money if you decide to sell.
Yup. Coach has superior quality especially the 1941 collection. Shop at coach boutique. Thick leather brass hardware. If your looking for the less expensive coach line shop at coach outlet website. Both are decent.. you get what you pay for with coach on the two levels. They also have coated canvas to on some bags.
I have this exact bag that I got in 2004. The lock and key are solid brass. The zipper pulls are some type of grey base metal plated in brass or gold. The zipper pulls chipped on mine and I sent it back and they replaced them at no charge. I like the bag, but I do think for this much money nothing should be chipping.

Bucephalus 09 Louis Vuitton moved away from leather a long time ago as leather trunks absorbed water where as lv trunks made of canvas repelled water and stayed dry, which is a big part of their success. They have kept making the majority of their products in canvas ever since.
Their leather bags cost almost twice what this one does. Besides, anything but the best quality leather is not going to hold up as well as the treated canvas stuff.

Don't know why your bashing the bag and then do a video of it???? I own several LV pattern and Damier men briefcases and satchel pen holder and belts and I Love them all and hey they make a statement and just look darn good.
They use that fabric because it more durable and easier to clean. I own one in the cobalt Damier pattern and after 4 years it still looks new. It’s been in the rain, tossed around and holds up. The LV folks know you are going to be traveling and frankly if it was all leather it would look tired and used like your other bag. Before you comment, actually USE the bag for a year and you will see what I mean. Additionally I could flick mine for half of what I paid for it because there is a market for quality LV product. I really like your channel but when it comes to watches and travel pieces you miss the mark...
That bag will last more than a lifetime. It does indeed develop a beautiful patina. And it maintains its value. We have traveled all over the world and the bag is still beautiful. Goyard uses the same fabric. Both of these brands produce products that last for generations. Hermes products are vastly more expensive and only marginally better quality. Do better.

4:26 I have to correct you on that. They actually do most of the work in Romanian factories and only assemble them in Italy, France, Germany... For example LV shoes are made in Romania, and then they nail on the sole in Italy to be able to use "Made in Italy"
I got that exact same travel bag over 7 years ago. Don’t remember how much I paid back in the days (in Switzerland) but I used it only twice during my travels. Size is good but bag and strap really not comfortable and no protection under the bag, so don’t really want to use it will traveling. I still have it folded in my WIC. I have a few other of their products, like passport holder or documents holder (leather) and like the quality and craftsmanship. I use my LV wallet daily for over 12 years and still in perfect shape.
I have never given a thought to purchasing one of these bags. I would much rather have a vegetable dyed leather bag and enjoy the eventual build-up of a lovely patina...
Great video and analysis. LV has an appeal that I don’t understand, but many seem to crave it. I had no idea that material was PVC based! Not a durable material at all. Many grades of leather and or textile fabrics will outlast and outperform LV’s bags for fractions of the price.
The whole point of a duffle is to put it somewhere to hold your stuff while you do something else. If you want to be a constant target for thieves wherever you go then it’s a very good idea.
Bottom line is buy what you like plus Hermes and goyard or counterfeited as well the counterfeit everything someone spending money just get what you like when soending money
Could you imagine how heavy that bag would be all leather... empty even? The fact that the canvas holds up better than leather and is obviously timeless watching the history. They are investments and I do think they are worth it... i like the fact that with proper care I shouldn’t have to buy another one for possibly a lifetime. I also find people look stylish and classy when carrying a classic like LV.
Investment? Seriously? It's a vinyl bag, if you actually use it for its intended purpose (namely for traveling) they would fall apart very quickly. Also as stated in the video, most people would think you have a counterfeit bag, because that regularly happens with these bags.
Investments are something that you expect to be worth more in the future than they are in the present. A used vinyl bag that is still in production will never be more valuable than you bought it for.
Too many people in the comments trying to justify their Louis Vuitton purchase. If you're buying LV you're just trying to impress others. For that price you can buy an amazingly well made leather bag that is completely hand stitched, and made of the highest quality leather. What's the difference? You can't show off and satisfy your vanity with the latter.

I don’t know why this guy has such a negative view on the bag, because the material is awesome! It holds well and you can wear it in the rain without worrying. Just get the canvas material but in damier so you don’t have to worry about the vachetta leather, and you’ll be able to use the bag anywhere, and for ages.

The reason the exterior of the bags are made of cotton backed PVC is for durability. This fabric was originally a replacement for the waxed cotton canvas of the earlier trunks. You state that Leather is more durable but that's just false. PVC is waterproof, and longevity wise will outlast leather if heavily used.
However Louis Vuitton is famous for the trunks, and this canvas was developed for that application.
Keepalls of recent years have certainly declined in construction, older bags used authentic non coated brass but over time this will oxidize and stain the vachetta leather. The canvas used to be thicker, the leather was thicker and the hardware was better quality. They changed in the early 1990s to suit increasing demand and restructured their factories.
Nevertheless you mention Goyard as a "superior" Luxury item but they too are made of PVC canvas with leather handles, so paying 3x as much for the same type of item i'd say thats terrible advice.
Louis Vuitton does of course make full leather bags, they are more expensive but are indeed high quality items. The top end of the brand is still the trunks and hardcase items but in the modern world they simply are not practical and usually end up as decorative items.
In terms of a modern keepall i'd have to agree with your assessment.
The only reason is for the profit margin.
I don't have anything against the fashion industry. But to see a company built from innovation evolve into one that just leans on its name to sell cheap products makes me sad...
I notice more and more companies over the years have fallen by the wayside. When they started having China make their goods. Now many of the brand name companies are just selling products with their cheap embossed or silver plated brand emblem and not worth basically anything.

I own 7 Louis Vuitton bags which I bought back in the early ‘90’s. They have been beaten, shot, dragged, driven over (don’t ask) and dunked in a river... they’ve been used as bags, pillows, seats and foot stools. They are still in excellent condition and I have received ridiculous offers to buy them. Not interested as they are my travel and hunting history when I was young. They are excellent with extraordinary quality.
Sadly, Louis Vuitton is now nothing more then a expensive department store. When I purchased my bag ensemble there were no sunglasses, no shoes, definitely no bloody sneakers, no clothing, no watches. The company has definitely changed for the worse.
I will still adore my LV bags though. They are my constant traveling companions.

When I see someone with a Louis Vuitton bag, my first thought is “ is it a counterfeit?” And my second thought is “he or she has more money than sense”. For me, functionality is paramount. I have bought better luggage than that for a few hundred dollars.
That’s what I always think, too. As for me, I proudly own a Louis Vuitton “dupe” wallet from Amazon that I bought for only $6.

My mom has a LV duffle, it’s over 30 years old, looks new you can only see the age from the handles as they get darker over time, it’s been in rain on the dirt ground etc, it survives well

If your friends bought them thinking they are leather - they bought them for exactly what he said .... Status. It’s still a quality product, but if you spend that kinda $ on something, you might want to ask a question or two.
Henrik John personally, I find items that aren’t genuine leather are much better and worth your money because they can be used more safely. For example, a leather coat isn’t very useful in the snow because, well, leather and water don’t mix. But a faux leather coat is much more useful and still looks great

I bought a full leather travel bag from Debenhams for £100, cant express how happy i am with the overall quality vs the price. I dont give a toss about status, what im looking for is a bag which costs less, looks good and lasts longer.
Almost $2k for vinyl coated canvas? I will pass. My Filson bag has larger capacity, costs much less, and is made in the US.

hi there, just to slightly disagree about the price, because this bag is very durable, it can last for a long time, and if it gets any wear-tear, they can fix it without charging you . as the canvas is actually 7 layers of fabric pressed, plus it saves you a lot of storage because it can be folded flat without creating crease when you want to store it, because you supposed to get this bag for traveling, also you don't want to put your luxury bag on the floor :) lastly the handle is hand-stitch and with the time the color turns into the patina color dark brown something that the imitation bags they don't do that.. overall very good review

I think I have 5 or 6 keep all’s. Some canvas monogram. Some all leather, one shiny mirror polish and a couple of one off’s. Like I said. I lost track.
I use them when I feel like it. Sometimes for daily errands. But I used them a lot when I used to go to the gym. Excellent gym bags.
I don’t travel with them. I have a wheeled duffel bag for that that has a slot for my rolling luggage. Just easier that way for real travel.
I also have LV luggage. But never fly with them. Unless it is private. Nothing like the airline ‘losing’ your $10,000 suitcase.
My main daily carry is either my LV Epi leather briefcase (with shoulder strap) or my Tumi backpack. I need neither in this digital age. But it’s the only ‘unnecessary’ thing I like to lug around to and from the office.
Just buy the counterfeit. They are the exact same quality.

You are absolutely right on the money concerning this bag and most of what Vuitton makes. I am French and I am not ashamed to say that Louis Vuitton is poor quality sold at premium prices. The cost of the bag is probably no more than 5% of the selling price. The only value of this kind of items is bragging rights for undiscriminating egomaniacs.

Bought the 55 Waterproof model and Ghurka leather keepall, some years ago. Sold the Ghurka in eBay after some time, because too heavy (at a heavy loss). LV is more lighter and is still doing fine after taking a beating in heavy rain.

Pleased to see your frank review. I feel your existing dark leather carry bag looks great and will probably look good for generations. I personally, have found a custom manufacture in Bali, Indonesia, that have made a few bags to my extremely specific design, materials, stitching and fittings I have used for 5 years and still perform great, look fantastic and will do so for decades. I love having things custom made and paying the person that does the stitching. The only caution is to COMMUNICATE your wishes to the craftsman (same as with a tailor) and make clear that you are happy to pay for the time needed to achieve the results required. You can get some great items for very reasonable prices. Another bonus is you are providing work to a craftsman that he/she can be proud of while not supporting counterfeiters. 20 years ago I observed a Bag Lady with a LV over her shoulder, I gave her a few dollars and vowed never to own LV or any other exposed branded product, if anything is to be on display, it the craftsmanship.

I think the fabric of the Monogram and Damier canvas is Kevlar. The yellow stitching of the calf leather is coated with beeswax. If you want to review a LV leather item, they offer products in Epi leather, Taiga leather and calf leather.

I had this bag bought for me as a gift . It’s lovely , the needle works is amazing. I know it’s only part leather but I do adore it . I wouldn’t buy it myself but people do comment on it when ever I us it. I think a fair price would be more like £400

Alcantara is a polymer and more resistant than its leather counterpart suede.
Yes, the margin on LV goods must be huge which is why it is one of the wealtiest companies in Europe, but its items hold for years and piece are passed down in the families and you get back most of your money if you decide to sell.

Yup. Coach has superior quality especially the 1941 collection. Shop at coach boutique. Thick leather brass hardware. If your looking for the less expensive coach line shop at coach outlet website. Both are decent.. you get what you pay for with coach on the two levels. They also have coated canvas to on some bags.
I have this exact bag that I got in 2004. The lock and key are solid brass. The zipper pulls are some type of grey base metal plated in brass or gold. The zipper pulls chipped on mine and I sent it back and they replaced them at no charge. I like the bag, but I do think for this much money nothing should be chipping.
If you had to look up if the bag is worth it then it’s not worth it
Have a search on the old gargler and look up vidyeos on refurbishing or repairing a product that you want to purchase. Then you see what it's made of.

If you are paying that much you would expect leather.
Bucephalus 09 Louis Vuitton moved away from leather a long time ago as leather trunks absorbed water where as lv trunks made of canvas repelled water and stayed dry, which is a big part of their success. They have kept making the majority of their products in canvas ever since.
Their leather bags cost almost twice what this one does. Besides, anything but the best quality leather is not going to hold up as well as the treated canvas stuff.
Don't know why your bashing the bag and then do a video of it???? I own several LV pattern and Damier men briefcases and satchel pen holder and belts and I Love them all and hey they make a statement and just look darn good.
They use that fabric because it more durable and easier to clean. I own one in the cobalt Damier pattern and after 4 years it still looks new. It’s been in the rain, tossed around and holds up. The LV folks know you are going to be traveling and frankly if it was all leather it would look tired and used like your other bag. Before you comment, actually USE the bag for a year and you will see what I mean. Additionally I could flick mine for half of what I paid for it because there is a market for quality LV product. I really like your channel but when it comes to watches and travel pieces you miss the mark...
So which alternatives are there, staying within the same price range, focused on quality and not branding ?

That bag will last more than a lifetime. It does indeed develop a beautiful patina. And it maintains its value. We have traveled all over the world and the bag is still beautiful. Goyard uses the same fabric. Both of these brands produce products that last for generations. Hermes products are vastly more expensive and only marginally better quality. Do better.
you spent a minute saying how they didn’t show the actual materials, but if you scrolled down more it lists exactly what every part of the bag is made out of (inside being cotton and hardware being gold plated brass)

For example LV shoes are made in Romania, and then they nail on the sole in Italy to be able to use

I got that exact same travel bag over 7 years ago. Don’t remember how much I paid back in the days (in Switzerland) but I used it only twice during my travels. Size is good but bag and strap really not comfortable and no protection under the bag, so don’t really want to use it will traveling. I still have it folded in my WIC. I have a few other of their products, like passport holder or documents holder (leather) and like the quality and craftsmanship. I use my LV wallet daily for over 12 years and still in perfect shape.

Great video and analysis. LV has an appeal that I don’t understand, but many seem to crave it.
I had no idea that material was PVC based! Not a durable material at all. Many grades of leather and or textile fabrics will outlast and outperform LV’s bags for fractions of the price.
The whole point of a duffle is to put it somewhere to hold your stuff while you do something else. If you want to be a constant target for thieves wherever you go then it’s a very good idea.

Could you imagine how heavy that bag would be all leather... empty even? The fact that the canvas holds up better than leather and is obviously timeless watching the history. They are investments and I do think they are worth it... i like the fact that with proper care I shouldn’t have to buy another one for possibly a lifetime. I also find people look stylish and classy when carrying a classic like LV.
They look great for about a year or two, but if you actually use it the “leather” just kind of falls apart.
Investment? Seriously? It's a vinyl bag, if you actually use it for its intended purpose (namely for traveling) they would fall apart very quickly.
Also as stated in the video, most people would think you have a counterfeit bag, because that regularly happens with these bags.
Investments are something that you expect to be worth more in the future than they are in the present. A used vinyl bag that is still in production will never be more valuable than you bought it for.
Too many people in the comments trying to justify their Louis Vuitton purchase. If you're buying LV you're just trying to impress others. For that price you can buy an amazingly well made leather bag that is completely hand stitched, and made of the highest quality leather.
What's the difference? You can't show off and satisfy your vanity with the latter.
