Highway To Heaven: The Untold Truth

- It wasn't long after the end of Little House on the Prairie that producer, director, writer and star Michael Landon had found another project to work on. Much like Prairie, his new series was meant to be a tear-jerker, about an angel whose job it is to roam the Earth and give people hope in hopeless situations.
It may have been a broad, melodramatic show, but Highway to Heaven was extremely popular during its run from 1984 to 1989. It almost didn't even happen, were it not for the relentless efforts of Michael Landon himself. Here's the untold truth of Highway to Heaven.

What did you think about "Highway To Heaven" when it was on?
i used to watch it all the time loved the show
The best show ever!! Can never be redone EVER!!
I thought it was incredibly vapid and self gratifying...kind of a hallmark hand job, in an egotistical sense...but I know everyone loved it. Landon thought everyone ELSE needed to be less "Hollywood" and nicer to each other, except for him. He just wanted to do what he wanted and make a million dollars. His attitude publicly of being all shucks and country boy, when he really was autocratic and demanding as a diva with everyone around him, was very well known. He had about 15 kids and several wives to support.
Just about everything you mention covered it,..
I didn't.
I used to watch this back in the 80s with my mom when I was a pre-teen. She loved this show. Now, she's gone and I watch it with a more nostalgic lump in my throat. The tears are a little more meaningful when I watch it now.
I watched it in 90's in Canada.
My mother and I watched this together too. I watched because my mother loved it but I’ll admit that I enjoyed the story lines. My mother has passed now and I too watch with a few tears. I watch so I can remember my mother.
@@cinnamongirl7877 God comfort you.
I watched this every week with my Mom who recently died. It brings back good memories
❤
Im sorry only you are blessed to have the wonderful memories of your mother.
My mother and I watched it together too. My mother has passed away and I am watching now just so I can remember those times with my mama.
A great series, with good happy end stories that are quite moving. As a Christian I love it promotes belief in God. The idea of an angel coming back on assignments to help fellow men and women. Shame they don't make series like that nowadays.
I miss lighter, friendlier shows. It's a shame audiences don't have time for that kind of format anymore, the world could use a bit of hope.
The pilot is still my favourite of the series. I love how slowly the story builds and how much warmth there were in all the characters. I especially found the new friendship in Jonathan and Mark incredibly moving and how they both helped each other. A lovely series as a whole.
The world is in desperate needs for angels like Michael Landon. His stories have changed many lives to better. God bless him in heaven.
I absolutely loved that show. I pray that God will bless Michael Landon and victor french souls and rest in peace 🙏

Michael Landon was a creative giant genius. His legacy and charisma are immortal💚🧚♀️
I am not religious but I am very spiritual so my faith is very important to me. I love the show Highway to Heaven and it never fails to make me cry especially during very emotional parts of the series.
JESUS is the highway to heaven.
The idea from Highway to Heaven came from Michael Landon's 2nd wife Lynn Noe. Her favorite movie was the 1947 film the Bishop's wife. The film became a annual Christmas holiday ritual at home. She told Michael that this movie would make a good tv series. It turned out to be Highway to Heaven.
I started watching this show a couple months ago again and I got to say it's one of the greatest shows ever made
I’ve Always Loved Highway to Heaven🕊✨❤️God Bless Michael Landon and Victor French and all the other Amazing actors and actresses that starred on this wonderful show🙏❤️
I just discovered and watched all the seasons last year.😊
So glad Michael put this show out there. I never missed a episode. Saw Paul Walker on Highway to Heaven in 2 episodes.
Loved this show as a kid . He was so smooth and a good looking man. Was a shame when he passed away 😔
I miss this show, by far one of my favorite shows of all time.
It pains me that people have changed. their interests and desires have changed and wholesome shows like this are becoming more extinct. I really miss this show.
The Full episodes are on UA-cam, if you would like to watch it again!
It’s not that they are extinct, it’s that the tv executives have orders to only air disgusting programming that does nothing to improve things
RIP Michael L. 🙏
I’m not a believer, but I loved watching that show as a kid , and good to hear Michael Landon’s family’s on board with the new remake .
That doesn't give me confidence given what the Disney family are doing with Disney or the current Tolkien estate is doing with Tolkien.
Highway to Heaven was my favorite childhood show!
The thing is No one can replace Michael Landon . No one can fill his shoes . He is the best . I believe Michael Landon Loved by many . and I believe he is watching down from Heaven and he is smiling With That beautiful Smile of His . I Love him .

I loved it then and love it now, much better than what’s on now, it should make people rethink what’s important in life. 😘♥️🕊💕love it. R I P Michael Landon and Victor French 🙏✝️
I'm not Christian and I wasn't around in the 80s when this came out but about a year ago I started watching it and its really good. For a show based on religion its not pushy with it at all and it has some good messages. Also it kind of reminds me of supernatural which has referenced highway to heaven in one of the last episodes
My favorite was little house on the prarie. Great series
I was raised by Christians so it was one of the few shows I was allowed to watch as a kid. But after Landon, who was Jewish, reportedly refused to convert on his deathbed, that was it. The VHS tapes simply disappeared off the shelf.

This was my favorite show
He was in I Was A Teenage Warewolf where I first saw him. Then I saw him in Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven. His buddy Victor French was in a few Gunsmoke episodes. And I saw his movie about his childhood in The Longest Runner.
My grandparents LOVED this show so I was often forced to watch this with them. The ONLY episode I remember was one that I believe was a Halloween episode. As they were driving Jonathan bent over putting his head under the dash. When Mark started to grow concerned, Jonathan suddenly came up growling, looking like a werewolf type monster. It's the only scene I remember from that show.
I think that was a play on one of Landon's first starring role, I Was A Teenage Werewolf.
@@billyboyer lol. I had no idea, even all these years later. It definitely didn't seem to fit with the shows typically religious content. It's funny how even back then they would include little Easter eggs into tv and movies.

also remember that Michael didn't practice any religion, he was Jewish father said, and Catholic mother's said, he did not believe in religions that is good, we should believe in ourselves and our faith.
Nadia Cusan I so agree with you!!!
I love highway to heaven, probably because I was a child whilst it was first shown. I've recently been watching it, on one of the great TV channels, and it still has an affect on me now, and I'm 48. Michael Landon is perfect for the role of Jonathan Smith, and I don't care if people think he's naff. Horses for courses. HTH is better than most of 'woke' PC rubbish on TV in 2022.
Well said
I’m really tired of remakes and relaunches. This one especially was a classic. It should Rest In Peace with Landon.
I used to know Micheal Landon's son. He's an amazing piano player. He did not speak highly of his dad.
You don’t say, a child of a wildly successful television star had a troubled relationship with their famous parent?!? Say it ain’t so😱
Yeah, when the gossip stories came out about him being the opposite of the father he was on Little House, I was shocked, he always seemed so wholesome and likeable. Either that or I'm not a good judge of character ☺️. Not judging the man,but I read he had a troubled upbringing with his mother, which may have shaped his future relationships.
Leave the negativity out of it. He left shows that blessed millions.
Sometime read some thoughts of those who starred in Little House…. Especially Karen Grassle
This character is the reason my first name is Jonathan my mom had a huge crush on him. Needless to say I go by my middle name lol
I'm laughing too...thanks....instead then, may I take your place and have a huge crush on your mom if you don't mind?...almost the same name too....lol. I love the show and memorized them all.
Lol. Some of the comments are hilarious. Landon was amazing.
Great minds think alike my friend...same first name too....totally agree with you....totally....but we can't quarrel with tastes.
Great show, loved it. I wish Michael Landon would have been able to star on his new Show US.
It used to be on Sundays on ITV in the UK and we loved it. Victor French died 6 months after filming the final episode. He didn't live long enough to see the final episode aired.
Oh! So Sorry for Victor French. Love both, Michael and Victor!!! They were fantastic. They died when they were 54 years old, and that Guy on a wheel chair was 54 when died too. Too bad! Weird coincidence!!!!
My all time favorite moment from Highway to Heaven was in the episode "The Banker and the Bum" when Johnathan made him and Mark invisible in order to get past security and then it just caused some comedic confusion amongst the security staff. Only Micheal Landon could make something that ordinary and simple into something priceless. Too bad the show never had a proper finale that resolved the shows premise. I always wandered what became of Johnathan Smith and Mark Gordan. Did Jonathon just go on angeling forever? Did Mark end up becoming an angel too eventually? Or did Mark eventually settle down and Johnathan finally got called home to Heaven? We just never ever found out. I mean as a realist, I'm well aware that the actors passed away years ago, but still the questions haunt me as a fan, Johnathon,Mark, where are you guys? What ever happened to you? Logically my guess to why Micheal Landon didnt end their story is because at the time of writing that last 2 part episode, perhaps he didnt believe it was completely finished and that they could always come back every now and then for one off TV movies so he decided to keep it open.
Loved Michael Landon shows. More family oriented.
However, I remember there was another series called Touched by an Angel. Can't remember who stared in it. And I was only able to catch a few episodes here and there when time and life allowed lol. It wasn't too bad of a show and I think at some point Valerie Bertinali was in it.
Roma Downey and Della Reese. Good show too.
Actually, touched by an angel wasn't so good. Person has problems. Angel is supposed to help. Kind-a doesn't. Angel reveals herself. Tells person god loves them. Problems solved. Kind-a dumb.
@@NoExitLoveNow I like that you think your opinion is an objective measure of whether the show was good or not😂 Talk about “kind-a dumb”🙄
@@NoExitLoveNow God loves you
@@fashiondiva6972 Of course, an opinion is all that is all anyone has regarding art. There isn't any objective measure. Thinking there is an objective measure is stupid.
That said, I gave an outline as to why I didn't think it was a very good show.
Love this show
Michal Landon was made for Highway to Heaven.
You know someone may have had something to do with the show and Michal to get his message across.
Shows now have so much trashy themes that children can't left to watch without parents changing the channel.
The depravity of some shows that pass as entertainment is damaging to society.
Rest in peace Michal, you did a great job here on Earth.
Was hoping to find out if Highway to Heaven, inspired Touched by an Angel. Similar premise......& loved Della Reese (RIP), in that show❤️✌️
Two false shows operating on the premise that humans die and become angles (they most certainly do not), without no regard for sin and repentance or JEsus' sacfifice on the cross, just people learning to believe in and feel good about themselves. There was nothing Christian about either show.
Respect to this man.
🥰🥰🥰❤
Great show, still watch it. Those were good times and I didn’t realize it as much as I do now. Any remakes won’t do it any justice with all the political correctness now, leave it alone and let people see what they missed and how it should be.
There was one scene that was quite emotional and I cannot find it.
It’s some scene were a kid dies from cancer and he says I did touched it grandpa I touched it. It was the ending scene where it was showing the moon.
One lesson from this: Never listen to a guy who says "No pun intended". 😉
Also: Fire all execs who walked out on the idea. The ones who remain are your path to success.
P.S: Surely there were lots of chuckles about the name "Victor French". 😄
Money has always changed certain ppl! The more they made. The more they separated from good down to earth ppl😊
I guess at first people thought Highway was a bit schmaltzy, but there were no shootings, cars exploding, swearing, skimpily dressed women. Jonathan was just trying to help people with his buddy Mark. Good way to get points upstairs.
That show made me cry like a bitch. It was a really good show.
The show is free here on UA-cam, i also cried like a baby back in the 80s and when i recently rewatched it i cried more. Theres an episode called alone in season 2 and its about a homeless boy and his cat and its really good
Theological error goodnes and niceness doesn't get you heaven but faith in Jesus.
I read that he promised God that he would make a show about spiritual things if his daughter would survive after her car accident. Idk if the reboot happened, but nothing can match Michael Landon's genius.
Hi. 🙂 Please, let us pray together. Dear God who art in heaven, hallow be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever in Jesus Christ's name we pray amen.

I would like the temperatures and I’ll be 65°
You got one thing wrong tho...Mark Gordon aka Victor French, was never an angel. He was just very troubled brother of one of Jonathan's assignments who decided that he still wanted to help people after realizing that he could no longer handle it as a cop and deciding to give helping people a try with an angel, where there would be better outcomes and not so emotionally damaging.
Just when you thought you couldn't like the dude more, along comes some nice revelations. Guy was a mench.
Not Christian but Morman
Managers were not the target audience, duh. It was too painful to them, or would have been if they could open their hearts.
And of course a cringy remake here, too. At a really bad time for doing that. So cynical and self-mocking to write it 'darker and grittier'. We need to move towards the light, not pander to the status quo darkness! DUH! - They should have given it a new title, make it a show of its own based on the concept. - They sure as hell won't be preserving the true spirit, the gold nugget, because at this point that expresses itself in preserving and reviving the good old stuff, which especially in this case is quite timeless.

Michael Landon was a very good actor but he was prisoner of the same syrupy role of the good guy. His roles were redundant at the end. I’m sure that if, once in a while he would have played the bad guy, he would have been awesome. I loved him in «Bonanza» and in «The Little House in the Prairie» but definitely not in «Highway…. » I hated that show!
I agree with you, I think he just had a guaranteed million dollar character to play over and over and sold out for the money, which is fine. I just like all the stories I heard about how awful he was to his cast, and peons. He expected to be treated like a king while telking the press (continually) about how sincere and caring he was. The kids on "Little House" weren't allowed to even talk to him unless he addressed them first. He was a workaholic, but also had a huge, expensive lifestyle to support. He was very Hollywood, and I'd rather he just admitted to being Lady Gaga and was more real than pretending to be some nun...
Millions of People Still Love Highway to Heaven 🌅😊🌅
I think his hair was the star, and you never see a person in his life that wasn't white and wealthy in his "life stories"..
