  • San Diego Zoos Asian Passage
The Asian Passage sits in one of the Zoo's oldest areas, featuring some exhibits that were dug out in 1920's. Broken up into three areas, parts of this area are designed to look like a Tropical Asian Forest and others are old fashioned bear pits.
The first area we come across on our trek is the Panda Trek. Here we will be surrounded on both sides by habitats for the Snow Leopard. These animals also have walkways over head to cross.
Next up is a habitat for the cute and loveable Red Panda, across from this habitat is the home of the Takin and at the end of this path is a indoor and outdoor viewing area for the Mang Mountain Viper.
The area where the Giant Pandas resided at the Zoo is now home to two more habitats for Red Pandas.
The Second Section we come across is the Sun Bear Forest and here we will come across a multi-species exhibit housing Angolan Colobus Monkey's and Black Mangabey. Past this is multiple viewing locations for the Francois' Langur and an Aviary housing Fairy-Bluebirds, Black-Naped Orioles, Golden-Crested Myna, Red-Billed Leiothrix and Grey Peacock-Pheasants. The final exhibit in this second section has two viewing locations for Bornean Sun Bears.
Before reaching the third section of the Asian Passage and set off to the side of the walkway are three aviary style cages that were blocked from the public at the time of our visit.
The Third area in the Asian Passage is old style bear pits with various species of animals, some having multiple yards to roam. First up here is the Andean bear, followed by North American Grizzly Bears, Spotted-Necked Otters, Amur Leopards and Sloth Bears Deemak and Kartick.
    .................
    FAST FACTS:
Snow Leopards - Referred as the Ghosts of the Himalayas these big cats are a stealthy predator and are capable of killing prey animals up to three times their weight.
Red Panda - Their white face and reddish coat help them blend in among the white lichen and red moss that covers the tree trunks and branches in the forests they live in.
Mang Mountain Viper - These snakes can reach lengths of 7 feet and their green-and-gray skin help them to camouflage against moss-covered logs and rocks where they wait for prey to wonder by.
Sichuan Takin - Their shaggy fur has a thick oil coating on it that acts like a rain slicker in the wet weather and during the winter, they grow a shorter undercoat.
Sun Bear - These are the smallest of the eight bear species. Their name comes from the yellowish or white crescent marking on the fur of their chest.
Sloth Bear - The sucking sound the Sloth bear makes while eating can be heard up to 330ft away.
Andean Bear - Also known as spectacled bears. They have unique vocalizations such as a soft, purring sound and a shrill screech.
Hope you enjoyed this trek through the Asian Passage at the San Diego Zoo!

That’s crazy it snowed the day the snow leopard arrived. The red lesser pandas are adorable. What an assume gift and a surprise pregnancy. Topsy had enough. 😂😂. Sun bears are so cute. Miss Houdini seemed to have gained a name she honestly didn’t deserve. She seemed to have a lot of personality. 😂You tell such great stories and the animals are amazing.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!! I had no idea that San Diego had ever had snow until I researched this video. So many amazing and beautiful animals have lived there, I like talking about their personalities.

They really do have a beautiful exhibit area for the animals. So many different varieties of Asian animals. Many I had never heard of before today’s video. We really need to spend a day at the San Diego zoo sometime.

I can't recommend it enough! They will have a new children's zoo area opening sometime later this year...and if you happen to go to San Diego I would also recommend La Jolla cove, you can spot sea lions and seals there. The zoos sister park the safari wildlife park has some breaktaking views and very beautiful gardens.
