I started running about 10 weeks ago and have my first half next weekend(!) Haven't been able to train as much as I'd have liked due to a dodgy knee so my aim for now is 2h30. Some more training and hopefully I can aim for 2hours next time :)
Ah hopefully not Mike! I got passed repeatedly by runners in the Rhinos costumes at the London Marathon a few years back. I'm always in awe of people who can run fast whilst wearing a costume!
@@lizbee726 Right on! Did my first half-marathon in 2018, aged 66. Did my first Marathon aged 68, last year. Did my last marathon this September. I'm hoping to do three in 2022. Age does overtake me on occasions, but I'm giving it a run for its money.
1h15m is one hell of a run. Well done. My first half marathon (last Sunday) was 1h41m as well haha. I'm looking to go below 1h30m and for a full marathon as well.
When I try to run and talk to a GoPro… my mind goes totally blank. All I can say is “oh jeez, oh jeez, oh jeez” so I respect the living hell out of Andy and Anna. How they remember a script, run and recite is beyond me.
Good job Maxwell. You're definitely in the zone to achieve a sub-90. One thing that helped me to achieve this, in addition to the recommended training tips the likes suggested in this video, is I bought myself a treadmill. This allowed me to get comfortable with the required pace and hold it. As you may know, an average sub-90 half-marathon pace is 14.1 km/h. So, once I got up to peak fitness I'd dial it up to 14.5 km/h with a 1% incline, and run at that pace for as long as I could. I didn't do this often, preferring to run outdoors, but it allowed me to quantify the required pace, get comfortable running at that pace, which allowed me to achieve the 'per km' race pace required when I was out on the training course. Note: I set a higher pace on the treadmill to compensate for outdoor conditions and to train my body to be comfortable running at a slightly faster pace.
This is exactly what I am aiming to do! Ran 1:33 four years ago but have not gone faster since. I am aiming to try again early next year so this video has come at the right time and I will definitely give some of those sessions a go. Thanks!
Ug, long grass start and long grass finish. Has enough awareness to talk to the camera about training. Looking to run sub 90 myself but not on that course. Well done Andy.
Congrats Andy ! Great Run and a great Video. I´m struggling with my HM Time (PB 1:31). This is exactly what i need. Nice variations (specially the intervall sessions). Thank you for your tips in this video.
I saw the video title and my first thought was it was too easy for you! But then I saw that you were on grass and actually recording the video while doing it. I just signed up for a half with the goal of breaking 90 minutes. My PR earlier this year was about 1:34 so I think it's possible
I've been pushing progressively faster and harder each race. This looks like a good goal to shoot for. Though I'd be happy with a sub-7 min half as well. I turned 40 this year and keep hitting new PRs. Running my best ever thanks to all the training tips I've gotten from your site. I hit a 1:40 half this summer and ran my first sub-7 5K a few weeks ago. I think shaving 10 minutes is a very ambitious goal, but not impossible. Thanks TRC!
Thanks so much for the tips! I recently subscribed to the running channel and find the information to be informative as well as entertaining! Keep up the great work.
Just missed out on a sub 1:35 a couple of weeks back, but improved on my previous attempt by a couple of minutes in warmer conditions so can't complain.
I would of thrown that selfie camera into the bushes, don't know how you put up with carrying that! Awesome work!! I'm training for a marathon in Dec right now to qualify for Boston and watching these videos helps me stay motivated!
Congratulations Andy!! I'm training for my fifth half in January and I have a 10k in 3 weeks as a trial. Although my goals are different and I'll be going for 1h50min, I will try my 10k at 3.1-mile marathon pace and the other 3.1 at half-marathon pace. I'm so excited to race again!🙂
Doing my first half marathon in 2 weeks time in Liverpool and my first marathon on April 3rd next year in Manchester. When I started training for the half marathon 10 weeks ago after a large break from running I was hoping to complete it in under 2.5 hours. Thanks to my training and getting back into shape I am now hoping to complete it in under 2 hours assuming reasonable conditions on the day. One thing I did find useful as a novice runner was running in a few 10km races instead of my normal long runs during my training as it has made me aware of how easy it is to run faster than intended on race days which I just about got away with in the 10km races but doubt I will be so lucky in a Half Marathon. On the topic of intervals while I can definitely see their benefit they would take the fun out of running for me as they are too regimented, the closest I come to running intervals is what you would probably consider "fartleks" as I pick up the pace on some strava segments on my route to see if I can beat my PB on them and slow down between them. I also have to confess to being unable to follow your Tempo runs as I currently lack the fine control over my running pace to reliably differentiate between easy, HM and Marathon pace
This is a lot of intensity in this training program! I ran a 10K at 44:27 this weekend and most of my runs are long easy runs at 6 min / km for +18 km. You don't address the 80/20 / polarized training idea, but to me, this reads as a lot of intensity. I would need to balance the intensity vs how much motivation I can sustain/mobilize for a session and how intensity my body can handle! Just adding a lot of intensity in both intervals, long runs and variations makes me think that who ever can handle this is just a beast that can handle both endurance and speed and I'm wondering if they even need a plan. Thanks for the video, gave me a lot of ideas!
Great video Andy! Talking and videoing the whole way through and still achieved a fantastic time. Thanks for all the long run sessions, I always get really bored I'll have to give them a go
Last year my PB was 1.58. I took on some really good training tips from an experienced long distance runner. Hit 1.37 2 weeks ago while training for my first marathon. I will have a pop at 1.35 in December. 1.30 might be a target for 2022....great tips for my next training block.
Running my second half next Saturday. I have A/B/C goals. A is a sub 2 hour, which will be tough, I ran my first 55 minute 10k recently. B is PR, so anything less than 2:12 and C is just finish. Honestly anything over C will be icing on the cake since I’m in my first year of really running.
@Ismael I hope you kill it! I’m running my second, I’m getting back into athletics in my mid 30s so hopefully in the next couple years I get close to your time haha
Just ran my first 90 minute half a few weeks ago in training. Now that it is again possible to race I really should get myself signed up for one and make it official. I'd like to think that with a bit of race adrenaline I might squeeze another minute or two.
Andy gives good advice that can be adapted to every level. My best ever HM time was 1.43 (twice) but now, at 68, I’m struggling to get 2.15. If I was still in the 1.40 region I think I could possibly have looked at sub 1.30. As it is I’m wondering if I can nudge back towards 2.00?
Just ran a 1 hr 38 min half marathon today.. then got home....and saw this... Oh well, still rather pleased with it, it was a new pb for me, so I'll take it. Also, gives me some extra motivation for the next one!
I ran 1:32 in the Bristol Half recently narrowly missing out on the sub-90 I was training for I'm still happy with my time though got my B goal of a pb and it was an amazing event!
Ran a 1:54 half in August, I think with some more long runs under my belt and a smarter pre race dinner choice I could get sub 1:45 next year! Excited to work towards that goal once xc season is over
Was meant to run Royal Parks Half this morning, aiming for around 1:35. Unfortunately I got bloody COVID on Monday. Fingers crossed I’m in good shape for Gosport next month instead and am planning on working on sub 90 early next year.
Congratulations Andy! Wow, so many obstacles to running a sub 90min HM (heat, grass, vlogging). I'm not aiming for such a fast half marathon, but I really like how all the training sessions are adaptable to my pacing.n
Great video, helping to get a general understanding. Will race my first "official" (recorded time) Half Marathon in some months and am now struggling to find a "reasonable yet challenging" goal time. If all goes well in training I might aim for a time around 1:40, will see during preparation if it is possible.
@@runningchannel Not this year sadly but did the Marathon in 2018 and 2019, the route back then passed through the campsite my family stayed at every year which was lovely
It's impressive that you can do that and record 10min of footage for video, and then you realise there's probably another thirty minutes that hit the edit room floor
Great video, amazing how you manage to run sub 90 mins and remember the training schedule. Something to work towards for my next one in Feb having just run London.
That looked like a tough course, congratulations! Strong effort and you smashed it :) This friday I went to the track and broke 1:30 for the first time myself. Then I saw this vid pop up in the Running Channel and found that amazing! My PB is now at 1:28:43 but I'm absolutely positive that Andy would kick my ass easily in a race :D
Just did my first half today. Grand crus marathon, Dijon, France. 2h.33. Only been running since the first lockdown which is what inspired me but haven't ran for the last 2 months so could have done better but I was happy to finish. I think the 1st position was about 1h16min.
Thank you Andy: useful stuff. As ever. I'm currently considering the Downton half-marathon on December 5, having done the full Southampton Marathon on September 5 and the Bournemouth Supersonic 10k October 10. I'm reckoning that, carefully considered, I can devise a seven week training plan that will taper me down to a base to train up to what I am trying to think of as a training run. That is: nothing heroic. By the way, Andy & team, I did my first marathon last year on the same course as seen on your video, at Wimborne St Giles. When the New Forest Marathon was eventually cancelled I stopped marathon training. About a fortnight later they organisers announced a new venue (it's usually run in the outskirts of Brockenhurst -- a bus ride for me) for a limited number of participant. Imagining one would have to apply I took no action. I got the bib in the post six days before the event! Not only was I only keeping parkrun fit, for "not-a-parkrunning", I had to hire a car to get there. I can't imaging how the landowner, Lord Shaftsbury, gets about? The nearest station is Salisbury, about twelve miles away, and the nearest bus stop is outside the station. To cut a long, tedious and painful story short, I tweaked my sciatic nerve a little over half way round and limped the last eight miles in agony. Still, I did manage to qualify for the banana. And the splendid T-shirt. Time: 5:17. Pleased to report that I was fit enough to walk, if a little gingerly, to the pub that evening and it only took a couple of days to recover.
Thanks Andy for the tips. I'm training for a HM with a specific finishing time. Those tips certainly a big help. Although I know its going to be tough.
Great result Andy. I’m training fir the Benidorm 1/2 at the end of November, hoping to take my time (2:08 Brighton Feb 2020) down to sub 2 hrs…. Hopefully 1:55 or so!
Thanks Andy! Love these videos. The advice, the training plans, everything is fantastic! Well done on achieving the target and thanks again as it must have been very taxing talking/ filming whilst running a race🤯. I ran the Manchester Marathon on Sunday and my goal was 3hrs 10mins. I managed to achieve this. Furthermore I set a target of sub 90mins for a HM and managed to do this in 1.27.01??!! Absolute shock and delerium😊
Thank you so much for sharing these training ideas. Really looking forward to do them. I will have my 3rd half marathon on the 31st of October 🙂 congrats Andy for this great time👏🏻Awesome race👍🏻
Andy is just incredible! Did my third ever half marathon today and ran a 1:46:08! Not sure about a sub 1:30 just yet but may vary this training when I next decide to do a half! Well done and thank you Andy and everyone at the running channel. 😁
It's definitely achievable for you, just got to keep putting the work in like you are! I just jumped down down im terms of official PB's from 1:44:57 to 1:30:21
Thanks so much for watching and well done on your half marathon! As Nathan says, it's definitely achievable. Hope you found the sessions in the video helpful 🙂
I did my first at Salisbury(very flat)last week in 1:44:12, not bad for an old git who only started at new year?(was well over 14 stone and could barely jog 100m!) thinking sub 1:30 is the logical eventual target, til i realised the pace needed is pretty much my best parkrun time i did yesterday at 21:02! its pretty much my totally flat out for me. But never say never, amazed myself this year so who knows maybe one day!
Progressive runs is something I really do enjoy! I just re-started my running training a few days ago after being forced to stop running for 2 month (foot injury) and I can't wait to reach those 20k runs with a progressively increasing pace. Also, I'm not sure if I want to experience someone overtaking me in a racing easily chatting with his GoPro while running significantly faster than me^^
Amazing!! I can’t believe you can chat while doing this - super impressive. My best half was run in 1:46:20 and that was just me doing only easy runs because I didn’t really know how to properly train with workouts at that time? That was 3 years ago and I can’t get back to that pace again. I don’t know how I did it so casually. Running another half on Halloween in a few weeks to reassess my fitness but I’m guessing I’ll be around 1:55:00. Sigh.
Top training tips. Gonna use them for the next one. My first half marathon is in 6 days (Amersfoort), only easy runs for me this week. My goal is to do it under 2 hours.
I ran a 1:30:06 at Bournemouth Half yesterday. I'm slightly gutted that I just missed the magic 90 minutes but I was aiming for 92, so trying to remember that and celebrate the achievement! Annoyingly, I paced perfectly to a 4:15 average, but the extra 300m recorded on my watch took me over.
Imagine turning up for your half marathon, feeling ready and strong and then Andy Baddeley comes and stands near you at the start line....nooooooooo! Also ,well done running and making the video at the same time.
I just did a 1:34 last month. Footwear was hurting my right foot and slowed me down for the second half. I think I can crack it next time. Thanks for the tips.
I'm training for my third HM in November, it will be my first actual race with people around. My goal is to run it under 90 min this time, last one was done in 95 min.
Well done Andy, recording a vlog whilst running at pace is one way to make your hm even harder. What time could you do without the filming and talking?

My first one shooting for 12 min miles or 2:38 very excited!
Just under 2 weeks to liverpool and goal is just complete it now, i got a hamstring injury and had to take a week off :( Back at physio tomorrow

Probably done it quicker. Didn’t they not measure the course properly or was that just the marathon course?
Nice work Mike!
My half marathon pb was 1:15:01 way back in 1988. My last one was 1:41 aged 65 in 2018. Old age catches up with us all in the end.

The New Forest race day is incredible but always so hot! Congrats.
Thanks Colin! We're you there this year?
@@runningchannel Not this year sadly but did the Marathon in 2018 and 2019, the route back then passed through the campsite my family stayed at every year which was lovely
Great work Andy, those interval sessions look brutal…….think I’ll stick to my sub 2hr target for now 😂
It's impressive that you can do that and record 10min of footage for video, and then you realise there's probably another thirty minutes that hit the edit room floor
It was around 7 minutes of actual talking whilst running. Not that hard for a good long distance runner.
Great video, amazing how you manage to run sub 90 mins and remember the training schedule. Something to work towards for my next one in Feb having just run London.
Thanks Alison! Good luck with your training 🙂
Andy is a BEAST!!!!
Just did my first half today. Grand crus marathon, Dijon, France. 2h.33.
Only been running since the first lockdown which is what inspired me but haven't ran for the last 2 months so could have done better but I was happy to finish. I think the 1st position was about 1h16min.
Woot! Talking to the camera, thinking and running that fast? That was impressive, Andy. Great job!
Thanks 👍
Awesome video Andy
I like chasing people down when I race. It's not so easy to do in a virtual race though!
Glad you enjoyed it, Rob and well done for Manchester! What's next for you?
@@runningchannel . Thank you kindly. Probably focusing on 10k and half marathons now until the next marathon later next year
Great training session ideas to upload to the watch!! Cheers Andy
Glad it was helpful Ashley! Let us know how you get on with the sessions 🙂
Fun idea. Can’t wait for the 5k and 50k videos!!!
This certainly will help, in November I’ll try a little more than a half but obviously in more time jaja ! You’re a pro!!!
You got this Stefan! All the best for race day!
My guy just runs a casual sub 90 half whilst recording a video absolute legend !
🙌
Respect! Go, rocket!
I just hit a new PB of 2:10 in training. I don't think I'll be aiming for 90 mins just yet 😂
Imagine turning up for your half marathon, feeling ready and strong and then Andy Baddeley comes and stands near you at the start line....nooooooooo! Also ,well done running and making the video at the same time.
Hahaha! Absolutely! (He's really lovely though, so I'm sure it wouldn't be that intimidating!)
This is amaaaazinggg!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It seems it was a kind of tempo run pace for him! I think he can easily finish under 1:20
That was EASY! Well done, I'd love to run a 1:45, 1:30 is well beyond my level.
Well done.
Great tips! any ideas what your 5k time / pace should be in regards to the interval training tips
King you are Andy great time 🏆👊✌🤪💯👍🥳
Well done Andy, recording a vlog whilst running at pace is one way to make your hm even harder. What time could you do without the filming and talking?
Amazing video
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
Great vid we'll done Andy! (And editor!)
Thanks Chris!
Congrats. 👍
I’m Doing the Auckland HM in Jan and looking to get my time down from 1:45 to as close to 1:30 as possible - would be stoked to do it under 1:30!!
Fantastic Kris! Good luck with it!
Great video. Would you recommend incorporating hill runs into training for a 90 min HM? Does this make a big difference?
That’s insane!
