In this video I talk about my recent super-sized router sled purchase. It is produced by an independent small business here in the U.K. and I think it is outstanding value for money and an exquisitely made product. I also take you through the process of assembling it should you choose to go ahead and purchase one yourself.
As ever, thank you so much for your continued support in my disability woodworking adventures. Best Wishes, Leo Winstanley

Ooh now That’s a good bit of kit Leo. I’m looking forward to seeing it in action. 👌🏾
Ran some tests with it today Ash, very very impressive 😀😀👍👍
I just bought one of these off Ian and i have to say it is pure quality, smooth and well made.
Couldn’t agree more, fantastic product👍
Man.... My very very veeeery respect for you! Awesome determination 🎉
Thank you for the kind comment, much appreciated 😀👍
I have to say that is an amazing price for such a quality sled. I think that is within the budget of home hobbyists, maybe not first off but as they progress in the hobby. Excellent video Leo and what a top quality sled.
Thanks a million Jim and I really do appreciate the honest feedback. It is great to have the opportunity to ask questions like this to a group of people who’s opinions I trust and helps me shape the content I’m trying to create. Cheers Jim 😀👍
Totally agree with Jon carter quality outstanding very informative and to the point
Thanks Dean, genuinely appreciated 😀😀👍👍
Leo, I've been a sub of your channel for quite a while. I can't quite put my finger on it but this video seems to have made a step up. The quality of the video and your presentation of it, for me, has suddenly improved tremendously. This must be a testament to all the hard work that you put in both infront of and behind the camera and it's starting to show. Great stuff.
Wow, thank you Jon for such kind words. I have been working hard behind the scenes to try and improve the quality of my videos and it is so kind to know it hasn’t gone unnoticed. My website members have been a big help as I can bounce ideas off them before it makes it to the public facing videos. Also, one thing I’ve always hated doing and avoided as much as possible in the past is voice overs. I don’t know why I hate doing them, but I appreciate they can add to the overall presentation so I tried my best with it on this one 😀😀
Not in the UK, but i truly respect everyone who backs small local businesses. That's the way to go! Wonderful channel, new sub!
Thank you, very kind of you and much appreciated 😀😀👍👍
The inserts were an inspired touch, seeing as it'll spend most of it's life out of the way. Certainly moves more smoothly than my travesty of scrap wood for a router sled!
Glad I thought of the inserts idea pal as it will make packing it away and storing so much easier 😀😀👍👍
That look awesome 🎉
Thank you 😀😀👍👍
That looks to be a very high quality piece of kit Leo. I think the price is very competitive indeed. Look forward to seeing it in operation.
I appreciate it’s a lot of money Mike, but for what you’re getting it is incredible value for money👍😀. Testing starts next week 😀😀👍👍
Great router sled
Cheers Jim, it is a great set up 👍👍
That looks an awesome bit of kit, quite a step up from a home made sled. The runners look smooth which is something the home made ones never are.
That slab looked awesome too. Hopefully the desk build goes well and there’s a video of that.
Keep up the good work mate.
Nice one, cheers pal for the comment. Yes I’ll be filming some parts for a video about the slab, will probably look at a video milling it next week possibly 🤷♂️
Seems good value to me. And easy to start cheaper and build up size as needed.
As a beginner it looks like a great option when I really can’t get a jointer/planer
Thanks Mike, that’s a really good point actually if you think the 1500mm model costing £325 gives you loads of scope as a planer far wider than machines costing ££££
Absolutely brilliant video, l will definitely be in touch with Ian, you are a diamond, many thanks mark 3254
Thank you. A great investment and worth every penny 😀😀👍👍
Brilliant, helpful video Leo. I had seen these sleds myself and your description reinforced my opinion, that this is a quality item. Loved seeing how you set it up. I just wish I could work at the speed you did - ha! Anyway a another quality video, clear explanations and methodical approach; no one can ask for more. All the best with milling your slab, and I am looking forward to seeing that and what router bits used etc. Take care.
Cheers Mike, the sled is an incredible piece of kit and Ian who makes them is a great guy and a pleasure to do business with. It was a delight to mill the burr oak slab with that setup, I have the other half of the slab to mill at some point too, just need to find a buyer for it first! Best wishes pal, Leo
Wow 👍
😀👍
For those overseas, the US-made system, which is similar, costs less than 415 Stirling. However, the killjoy is postage, which from the US to Australia is US$220.00. The parts out of China are less than half the US and 1/3 of the UK cost, and postage is subsidised. What one has to make is the router base plate which will cost A$57 for a 12" square piece of polycarbonate.
Thanks for the comment here and hopefully folk reading this in Australia will give it serious consideration 👍👍
Where from China can I get from as I’m in Australia?
Really nice job, as some other commenters have said, it’s next level!
For what it’s worth I think you’ve done right using the 3x2. You have capacity there for future thicker projects and as you said you can slide mdf sheets in for thinner ones. Anyway really impressed and hoping you will do a video or videos about this table top. All the best 👍🏼
Thanks Mark. Yes it is very impressive and I think it does represent really good value for money. Can’t wait to start using it 😀👍
Very interesting need a router sled
Get in touch with Ian Derek, well worth a conversation 😀😀👍👍
Awesome bit of kit that Leo and at that price 😮bargain. Great video
Thanks Adam, yes I think it’s great value considering what you’re getting and the quality of the product 👍😀
Hi Leo , that sled is a quality bit of kit i bet it was fun putting all that together I guest it takes a lot of room in the workshop I wonder the next video would be you build a extension to your workshop once again great video see you on the next one Take care mate
😂😂😂No extension pal, I think that’ll be taking things too far. At least with the way I’ve assembled this using threaded inserts it should be pretty easy to pack away when not in use 👍👍
Looking awesome fella! I highly recommend the WD40 PTFE Dry lubricant, that way wood dust doesn’t stick to the rails and less likely to bother the bearings 😊
Thanks Dean, I’ll pick some up in the timber merchants next week 👍👍
My biggest respect for you working, with one hand only! Have you always been left Sided, or did you have to learn it completely new? I'm a carpenter since 1998, after job education, I was an Atileristic Mechanic at a German Navy ship, for my duty time of 10 month. I can tell you, working inside a 76mm Otto Melara Gun, was way more dangerous than the carpenterie work! One mistake inside the gun tower while working at the mechanic, my biggest concern was to lost an hole arm!
So, once again, my biggest respect for your achievements. Done by you and your left hand!!
Thank you for your very kind comments which are much appreciated. To answer your question, no I used to be right handed so since the car crash I have had to teach myself to be left handed which has been a challenge! Taking up woodworking though has helped to improve my coordination and fine motor skills on my left side. Best wishes, Leo 😀👍
@@Hand-i-Craft wow! In that case, my doubled respect for your achievements!!!!! My uncle was a neurologist, so I'm aware of all that headache........ 🤮🤮😂😂👍👍👍‼️‼️
Amazing price and looks like a fantastic set-up. We need to meet up after your OP
Definitely Pat, look forward to that 😀😀👍👍
Much less expensive than I expected. It’s well worth the money in my opinion and hopefully they’ll do well. I wouldn’t have a need for one at the moment, but if I did, the price wouldn’t put me off. 👍🏽
Thanks Mandy and thankfully that appears to be how folk are seeing it as the video has gone public. It’s not that it bothers me personally, but I just want to try and strike the correct ‘tone’ if that makes sense when talking about the price of a product. This definitely does represent excellent value for money imo 👍👍😀😀
Great set up Leo. Just need to increase the size of my workshop so I can fit this great piece of kit in
It is a great set up Gordon. You can customise your order to different sizes 👍👍
Said it months ago Leo your gonna need a bigger workshop or a storage 'shed' 😂 That does sound like very good value and saves you struggling with your home made one which 'worked' but not with the smoothness of that setup (waiting to see you lift that slab onto it!!!!)
😂😂😂😂Going to need help shifting that slab pal, some serious weight in that! You’re absolutely right, this is beautifully smooth and can’t wait to try it out. My own sled was ok, but only really suited to smaller slabs and my good arm was always dead after using it!
That's a great price!
Totally agree Tom, excellent quality too 👍👍
A very good price for what you've got there Leo 👍, similar 'branded' ones are 3x the price 😳
Excellent video Leo, relly well produced. Why not make a video of manhandling that supersize piece of tiimber before you video the maching of it - can't wait.
I was pleasantly surprised at the price - far less than the reconstruction I would need to my cellar to get it in! Thank heavens I don't have the work for it.
Thanks John. I’ll probably do a bit of filming but it’ll definitely take two of us to shift that slab. I’m really happy with the setup and, as I say in the video, I think it’s great value for money considering the quality of the product and the shear size of it 😀👍
I have the identical system just a bit smaller. 1m x 1.8m. Built it a couple of years myself from individually ordered parts. Bought the linear rails off Ebay. Got a metal working company to make the metal “U” plate for the router. Could order it online just submit own plans and dimensions. Just drilled the mounting holes to match my Bosch router.
What i like is that I can make the width smaller than 1m if I need to.
My main base rails have a piece of wood permanently fitted along the entire length slightly longer than the rails and I just clamp them to my bench when needed. The only issue I have had is when flattening epoxy river tables the epoxy can build up in the linear rails bearings. Dust/extraction still an issue and a bit messy.
Thanks Jack for the info here. Next step for me is to look at dust collection on it and how I can improve it 🤞. Thanks for the heads up about resin on the bearings, any ideas how to help prevent it?
Hi Leo,
although I have a 100mm HVLP dust collection system connected to large cast iron Thicknessers /Joiners / sliding table saw I don’t use it for epoxy work (Wood shavings etc used for animals) so using a standard Kärcher ShopVac/cyclone system for epoxy work. It Can’t keep up with the amount of epoxy (or large slab flattening but it is only a 40mm pipe attachment. I also have a compressor so what i do is use a compressed air pistol just to keep the epoxy build up down. When finished Before I pack it away I also try to clean the linear bearings out with compressed air. To be honest it hasn’t been a big problem up to now but worried that over time the bearings in the linear rails are going to get clogged. I am going to try to make some sort of “wide mouth” vacuum funnel attachment for the 40mm hose attached to the router plate to try to improve dust/epoxy collection.
Axminster do a collet extention for depth I'm not to sure if thier will be any flexing though. Your an excellent grafter well done. 👏
Thank you. I thought about the collet extender, but like you say a little bit worried about any flexing👍
Next video "how to remove the side of your workshop and extend it by a few feet!" 😂 Great video as always mate! 👍
🤔🤔😳😳😂😂😂😂😂👍👍
Hi Leo,just seen one of your older videos where you built a modular workshop and put the frame on adjustable risers...just wondered how strong they were as I'm considering using these to put under the base of my new log cabin next week, one, to keep it off the ground and two,to make sure it's absolutely level and firm...any thoughts would be appreciated 👍🤨
Hello pal, workshop been up for nearly two years now and pedestals have been perfect. Structure hasn’t moved a millimetre. Same idea here, I wanted air to flow underneath and wooden frame not resting on the floor. We’ve had some pretty horrific 90mph winds here a few times, and I’m not going to lie I thought I might wake up with the workshop a few doors down! But it has been great. Definitely recommend them 👍
I'm very interested 👍
Definitely worth getting in touch with Ian who builds them pal if it is something that interests you. Top bloke and great customer service👍
4.34 that brings a new meaning to face clamp.
Ah yes, the fine art of head clamping 😂😂
@Hand-i-Craft I love that sled. I think that price is accessible for most shed tinkers and makers and wow Leo I hadn't even finished watching before you replied.
Impressive community reach out❤

Hi What the thickness of MDF board and did you get any flexibility when you put the big slab on and what type of board did you go for like for example HDF MDF medite premium MDF or caberwood MDF
Thanks for the message, it was just the cheapest 18mm MDF that my local timber yard had, no signs of any bending etc when I use the sled. I also clamp the MDF bed to the top of my workbench 👍👍
Looks like Ian will not ship to the US. I'd love to get one of these. Is there a US version? Thanks!
I’d imagine weight would be the big issue pal in regards to shipping over the pond. Those rails have some serious weight to them! Best of luck with your search and hope you find something similar 👍👍
Nice. What diameter rails? SBR16 or SBR20? 16mm or 20mm? Thanks.
Sorry for the late reply, they’re 20mm 👍👍
Leo I think your going to need a bigger workshop, looks nice piece of kit mate
😂😂😂I’m rapidly running out of space pal 😂😂😂
@@Hand-i-Craft I can see an extension to the workshop coming soon!
How did you build your router base?
The base is just 18mm MDF clamped down to my workbench 👍👍
Hi Leo, Can I use your sled maker tool for my diode lasers?
I’m sorry I don’t know the answer to that. Do you mean to control it like a giant laser cutter? You’d have to find a way to power the rails, maybe it can be done but I’m not the man to ask 👍
@@Hand-i-Craft I just ordered new laser tool and I can work only 15 x 15 inch bed. I thought to extend the bed with your tool. Thanks for your input.
The quote is actually “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” had to pause the video to come here and clarify haha
😂😂👍👍
Great video, not as much as I thought it would be
Thanks Rob, it is interesting as I genuinely thought it would cost significantly more than it did. I hope the YT folk watching will think the same 👍
I don't see anywhere for dust control attachment, this is a problem, as flattening even a small slab makes a hell of a mess, a big slab is going to make such a mess in your closed workshop.
I added the dust port extractor on the Trend T14 and I was quite surprised how well it coped. I done a follow up video to this looking at improving dust collection 👍👍
Could Ian not add steel dowels to the ends to facilitate joining the two sections together, just an observation. I actually thought it would be in the £1000's as it looks very expensive, but well made. `imagine what it would cost if it had the Festool brand on it.
Thanks David and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve seen some on Instagram from Woodpeckers (I think) and the prices were eye watering. I’ve send Ian a copy of the video as well to see what he thinks so will feed this back to him about the dowels. Thanks David 😀😀
Hey Leo, nice to meet you,
So, this configuration can be purchased from you through eBay?
Waiting for your response because I want to order this kit
Thank you!
Thanks for the message, it isn’t from me personally. The contact details for the seller are available in the description of the video 👍👍
Hello,
Yes, I watched the video again and I saw.
So, if I use a Boch router for example then I need other configuration?
Thank you
Pah! Mine is 3m x 1.2m 😬😂
Great vid tho. 👌
😳😳Wow, and I thought this was huge 😳😂
@@Hand-i-Craft 😂😂

LOL Naaaaaaaa it's great 👍
Lol ya goofy m8te from Australia 😆
😂😂Cheers for the message 😀😀👍👍
Have you started working with it in anger yet? Look forward to seeing it in action.
Not yet Paul, going to make a couple of adjustments for dust extraction purposes then will be trying it out hopefully early next week 😀👍
@@Hand-i-Craft you've got more patience than me, I'd be getting a slab on (oh er missus) as soon as!
I don’t think that’s expensive at all, very reasonable
Thanks Gavin, very interesting to gather other people’s opinions 😀😀👍👍
You're a Great person I work with some proper back healing excuse generating lazy excuses of grafters. I'm going to show YOU to them and say how can you justify your very existence. I absolutely agree with @joncarter3038. Both the sled and video presentation is brilliant!
Thank you, very kind of you to say 😀👍
@@Hand-i-Craft You’re an inspiration to me! Will you be addressing dust collection for your sled? I would love to see what you come up with. I’m compiling the shopping list for my sled now using your ideas and suggestions. Thank you for your videos.
