I forsee this happening again and again. The beauty industry is oversaturated and unsustainable. There is simply too much available and not enough people or money to buy and use it all. The sheer amount that must go to waste annually is also staggering. The more I learn about fast consumables (makeup, fashion, everything really), the more horrifying the whole situation becomes. I'm trying to be more sustainable, like you say, less but better quality. Reducing plastic usage and so on. I only make clothes purchases twice a year, sale after Christmas and sale at the end of summer, with specific needs in mind (like a new sweater to replace an old or damaged one), rather than spending just because things are cheaper. I'm sorry for the people at BH, this must be an unsettling time of uncertainty.

Totally agree and try to behave the same way! I am on a low buy, trying to purchase less stuff in general and being more mindful with how I spend my money. For example, I don't follow impulse anymore when I buy makeup, even drugstore, and basically bought no new items of clothing in over a year 🙌🙌🙌. Still, I find something season/occasion appropriate to wear in my closet anyway, and I have more makeup that I can use in three lives😂

    • @hazardsigns
      @hazardsigns 2 роки тому +18

@@danyf.1442 Oh, me too. I'm using and enjoying what I already own. It has been bought already, so I'm putting it to good use. I'm also enjoying finding ways to mix up the clothes I own and wear them in a new way (I like to layer and have ventured into mixing patterns, when I'm courageous enough 😆). I struggle with impulse buying, my ADHD has a hand in that, but I'm training myself to put something into an online basket and then leave it there for a week. More often than not, I forget it's there and don't buy it. Small successes.

I’m also on a low buy year and wish these brands would sell individual shadows instead of only palettes. I understand their business model needs the consumer to buy in bulk but I honestly talk myself out of lots of palettes because 3-4 colors doesn’t justify me ordering a palette of 20 shades. I got the sweet shop palettes only recently at TJ Maxx because I couldn’t order them online from BH directly. Don’t get me started on why companies insist on doing so much stuff as limited edition or changing the formulations just to save money on a product people actually love. Fragrance companies seem to do that watering down situation a lot. I would honestly pay a little more for something I actually want that is high quality. I’m no accountant or marketing expert, so I don’t know what the solution is as far as indie brands keeping afloat, but there is definitely so much waste nowadays in every division of retail. Racks and racks of ugly, “who approved this?” Companies need to take note that we are more woke now, we want better, and we are more selective about our spending. It’s time to step into the future.

Poshmark has been my way to keep from buying "new" clothes! Ironically ends up more expensive than just Uniqlo or the Gap because of the shipping from multiple sellers. 😅 But the ability to get high quality second-hands (BETTER than what I can get at fast fashion retailers) and not adding to global over-production and the market for slave labor is worth it to me.

Good point about eyeshadows alone not being able to sustain a brand. People give a lot of flak to urban decay because they don't have the best eyeshadow palettes, but honestly I'm buying foundation, powder and concealer from them consistently every 3 months or so because the stay naked line is fantastic. On the other hand, eye palettes almost never get panned. They might be fun to develop and market but unless you're releasing a new palette every week (ahem*colourpop*) they can't sustain a brand.

Fully agree with all your points: BH overestimated the impact of celebrities for the brand and underestimated the impact of social media/content creators/product photography. And the gall of them using an inferior formula for those collections, what were they thinking?
On top of the themes being off, in terms of palette releases they often didn't fully commit to creative colour stories as they did for some of the food/travel themed palettes (i.e. Birthstone collection or the Halloween release, you know, the overdone monochromatic trend).
It also reminds me that they could have done eyeshadow palettes but smaller, 4-pans, 5-pans, like CP or ND.

Tips + explanation from a marketing major:
    1. Frequent discounts negatively affect consumers' perception of product quality.
    2. Discounts mean you sell at a loss. Try to instead use other strategies to convince people to buy your product. Instead, convince people the full price is worth it. Use a membership program. Use effective marketing to reach the right people, not just the most people.
    3. Availability & ease of purchased. Is it hard for customers to get a hold of your product? Is it easy to buy?
    4. Word of Mouth. Are your customers talking about your product? Are they recommending it? Why/why not?
    5. Ineffective targeting. You are either not aware of who your customer is, or unaware of how to reach them, or both, or unwilling to reach them.
    6. Not listening to the customer. Are you creating products without being aware of what the consumer market wants? Are you refusing to switch strategies?
    7. Not evaluating your product portfolio. What is selling, who is buying it and where? Take note and evaluate if you should fill in any gaps and/or get rid of products or product lines that aren't working.
    8. Not innovating. If you don't listen to the customer, if you don't analyse your product portfolio and if you don't create something new that's of value to the customer, the customer won't value you and you won't sell.
There's a lot more that could be discussed here. But take a look. Has BH Cosmetics failed at any of these steps? Which ones? None, some, all of them?

BH had a complete home run with the Sweet Shoppe collection, it caused a good chunk of traction for the brand to release something in addition whilst expanding that specific theme. People begged for a re-release of the palettes because it sold out with high reviews and when they did as customers we felt like finally a brand is listening to us (unlike ABH w/ the Amrezy highlighter). So we were quick to say ‘take all my money, I want it all’ but imagine if they’d release something along the line of Glamlite’s ice cream collection whilst they had the beauty community’s attention waiting for the restock. Hopefully they can get some support to move forward save it all, if it was a close down situation it’d be extremely disappointing because they have a great success. The PR situation is exactly as Angie said, she’s pretty much my go to for info about their releases, with a bit of Heather/Karen/Amy sprinkled in.

Must say, I didn't pay full price for any of it and most was at least a 40% mark off, some 70%, she has a point about the constant sales being part of the problem. I haven't personally tried BH Cosmetics, but from a design standpoint as I'm looking at their website now... The photography can definitely use some work! Not to mention the overall design of the website itself can use work. Like yes, you want customers to browse and hopefully add stuff to their cart in addition to whatever they went to the site for in the first place, but nothing is more frustrating than wanting to look at solely palettes and then having to dig through eyeliners and falsies and etc. Ultimately good quality will keep customers coming back, but how can you lure them in when the initial impression is not that great? And doubly so if they don't send out PR!

Well I admit I had alarms ring when I saw their products in Marshall’s. I was like - why they are already in expensive. For me I feel like they didn’t have the best footprint in Ulta - most items were out of stock a lot. And I agree with you that they put their money in collabs and campaigns that were not the best. Like - I am 43 - who is Doja Cat? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I do like their cheek products but you are right again - it is hard to make a dent in them even using them a lot. I also am not interested in the curse word palettes and I only liked one of those color stories. BUT looking at their site a minute ago - I love the monochromatic palettes that are there - the green and the purple! But didn’t know they were a thing. The waffle face palette my daughter wants but is not on the website - but IS on ulta’s website. I didn’t know about the mini trio palettes in the Christmas collection, I might have grabbed one. I feel like PR and just a better job advertising might help. I see so many people hyping “drug store” makeup that is getting better - catrice, LA Girl, essence - but BH doesn’t seem to be in that mix. Heck - they could have even gotten in BoxyCharm or something and gotten hype. A lot of crappy products have done that.

The first time I bought from them, I was a little skeptical because their website looked sooo bad in my opinion, I wasn't sure if I was buying from a legit business. Even now their website style screams "cheap crap" to me and I really love some of the BH palettes I have! And the constant massive sales - if the company doesn't value their own product why would consumers? I guess it goes to show that running a successful business is about more than just making the product.

Same, I know that maybe comparing to Colourpop isn’t fair, but CP has something for everyone in case of aesthetics. The minimalistic quads, colourful and fun collabs, more classy, nostalgic, flirty takes… okay, they still have some room to grow with their shade ranges, but A LOT of people will find some products for themselves. I liked the refreshed look of the BH’s Travel Series and I have the Amalfi palette (though there was a flop as it was repackaged Chicago and it was advertised as a new palette only similar to Chicago) but still. The format is all good, but the design is not speaking to me most times. The collection around swear words - whose idea was that? BH has great products and a potential for so much more, they need a few smart people on their team to bring them to full glory. I would love to see cheek singles or duos. I wanted the Belgian Waffle palette and a blush palette for a long time, but I wouldn’t be able to use all shades.

You’re spot on! Too many companies don’t really look at the market and see that it’s over saturated. As for collabs, not everyone likes or follows Chrissy Tiegan or the Kardashians, so why would we purchase a collab with them? I wish Becca had realized that. I never even heard of the people BH collabed with. It’s very sad to give all your money to a ‘celebrity’ so you can use their name on a product, and the product doesn’t do great. What a waste! Business 101, know your audience. I personally love BH and own five of their eyeshadow palettes, but I will admit, their website is a mess, looks very unprofessional, and I personally don’t like the foul names on palettes. With the market so over saturated, you definitely have to expand your brand beyond cute eyeshadow palettes, and collabs with ‘celebrities’ is not the answer. I never even thought of the PR aspect of it all, and I agree on social media, that’s huge, so many people become aware of a new product because they see their favorite UA-camr using it. Good video!

In one year, I bought so many of them. 2 zodiac, almost all the travel one, 7 of the months one and 6 extra ones. So many!

I recently bought their Greece themed face pallet from TJ Maxx a few weeks ago and i love it! So pigmented and not needing to use so much product! I only bought it because you mentioned how much you loved the brand so much.

I will say, re: sales, over in retail fashion land, we had our sales planned out at least a year in advance. It was never about selling off product that wasn't doing well (except for clearance sections specific to the local store), it was about driving traffic and hype to the store at various points during the year. Not sure if it works the same way in makeup, but Juvias Place is another example of a company that has a lot of sales. They however, have a very broad product variety that you can shop a full face of makeup from.
Also omg New Makeup Releases is coming back tomorrow?? I can't wait! 🤩

I never would have known about BH cosmetics if it weren't for you! And I LOVE those little birthstone palettes!!! Hppefully this restructure does them good and they start branching out, sticking with a formula, and marketing better! They could do big things! I hate that I missed out on those ice cream palettes. Maybe they will bring them back 🤷🏽‍♀️ Angie thanks for the last 5 days of content! It has been so refreshing and a delightful surprise! I hope you are getting settled in! Looking forward to a Texas vlog!!! 😁😁😁

Agree 100%. I became aware of BH when I ordered the itsjudytime palette way back (loved it!). I also ordered a brush set from them that used for years. Somebody gifted me the Carli Bybel palette and it was just ok. Glad to hear their shadow formula has improved over time. Your video makes me want to order from them again.

So happy to hear your thoughts! I knew you could offer some good insight on this! Hoping BH can figure this out and stick around longer. Such sad news 😢.

I've bought and fully used up BH cosmetics bronzer from the Oasis collection and OMG it was so good !! I wanted to repurchase but it was sold out and never got back.... Despite being a brand with an amazing eyeshadows, they can totally go for something more frequently repurchasable like a bronzer 🙂 Love BH ❤️ wish them all good and I hope they will make it 💪

I am so glad you did this video! I had to send that screenshot of that article to you bc I know you love this brand so much, Instantly my mind went to you when I read that and I very much agree with some of the points you make about the lack of innovation and sinking with the celeb collabs. It will be interesting to see if they can abide by the BK payment agreements and remain in business through the course of the BK and beyond. I was a BK Paralegal so I tend to follow these kinds of stories , but have since moved onto Civil Litigation in my career (currently not working though, might go back to work later this year or next lol)

I agree you should have been receiving PR from BH a long time ago and that it should include different items from their line. I was able to "get ready with you" this morning using the same palette you did because I watch your videos and have bought 26 BH palettes...because of you. I didn't buy them because BH sent me an email about launches. I might have bought other items if I saw more reviews from influencers I trust. So happy to see you are getting settled in and able to post videos!!!

After their travel and sweet shoppe collections, BH changed their focus to teeny boppers. They went from inclusion and quality products to vulgar crap for kids. Their packaging has gone from stunning to blah and their website sucks. They don't listen to and respect their loyal customers, either. I wrote to them expressing my disappointment at their change in direction after their Say It release and received a response explaining that their goal was outreach to a contemporary market. Looks like that's a fail.

Love BH cosmetics so much. Immediately thought Of you when I heard the news. I think everything you said is spot on. And their collab palettes looked very poor so I didn’t get them. It’s such a shame because their ice cream palettes and the travel series are amazing! I hope they can continue and I hope they watch this and take your points on board! X

You made so many good points! Really enjoyed this video. Also regarding your thoughts on PR- I personally rely on UA-cam so heavily in making my purchasing decisions. Almost every purchase I make is based on watching reviews by influencers like you, Morgan Turner, Alicia Archer (kinkysweat), and for the last several years, Mel Thompson. I have bought so many BH Cosmetics palettes that I initially had no interest in because of your raving reviews (Blueberry Muffin and Passion in Paris especially!!). PR is SO important in my opinion because I don’t want to spend my money until I see how the product works on others first and get reviews from channels I trust.
