What a SICK and BEAUTIFUL car!
I had the pleasure of driving an original 1956 S1 Continental Fastback back in the '80s. I say 'pleasure' because it lacked power steering (optional extra in the day) but apart from that it really was an experience wafting along on (and sometimes above) the limit. I can only imagine these restorations and electric conversions add to the experience and safety, up to date brakes and traction control must make a huge difference!
Resto-Mod with the emphasis on "Mod." With the drivetrain of the 21st century combined with the artistry of classic luxury cars, it is brilliant. I'd love to see California's Bureau of Automotive Repair try to put the kabash on one of these They've been known to deny approval on engine swaps that were a marked improvement in emissions before, but how could they say no to zero emissions?
That car and colour pallet are just gorgeous
stunning! what a project
Jack and Chris is the only reason why I still watch Top Gear
My god, those lines! It is undeniable that classic EV restoration is one of the best things electrification has come up to. Just one thing, please replace that iWatch for a proper gentleman's watch
Perfect idea. All classic cars that were designed for maximum comfort are absolutely suited to be converted to electric.
This is a beautiful piece of work. Reincarnation of such beautiful body's into EV is the best thing and it will be lovely to drive or see one on the road.
Engineering and art , both at its best. Would love to see a rolls royce build time lapse💯
That's no longer a classic car imo. In ten years time when all the tech in the car is out of date, the value will plummet unless you update again. If it had been left original the value in ten years will be through the roof.
Yeah thsese ev conversions are going to age horribly in 10 years when electric cars are just cheap and commen and ICE cars become more rare.
Another British centric nonsense!!
Usually I find resto mods a bit . . . Naff . But this is really beautiful , incredibly subtle and keeps all that inherent old Bentley class . Makes me proud to be British .
I absolutely love this!! Old school curves and lines, beautiful engineering - really bringing the past to the future!
My monitor now has scratch marks on the screen - totally stunning.
I wouldn’t do this to mint classic car, but as an restoration of old rusty cars it is amazing.
That's an important philosophical question. I agree, I'd prefer to see it based on a marginal example that's rotting into oblivion anyway, but unless it's something SUPER rare/significant, why not?
@@Thunderbuck As long as it keeps these beautiful cars on the road I guess I am fine with it.
It’s beautifully done, but I’d still prefer the original engine
What a machine. I think electric power suits the character of these cars where it absolutely wouldn't in something like a 60s Ferrari. Also, just being pedantic but the text says it's an S1, the commentary at the beginning said S3, this one looks like an S2 which would be right if it's a 1961 car.
astonishing indeed!!!
I never expected top gear to jump on board with electric conversions. Seeing this review makes me very happy.
This needs to happen more so we dont lose our classic models altogether...
That won't happen.. watch this video. Classics will be around forever.. ua-cam.com/video/1CUA2imRYRM/v-deo.html
@@yeahproductions Certainly, Harry always makes a lot of sense, so I can only hope policy makers continue to see the same sense into the future. I'm still grieving over the last...final edition S65 (not a classic, but a car i adore...and there wont be another).
Phenomenal engineering. Practical and Modern, yet Elegant and respectful of past glories…
The thing that appeals to me most in a car is it's engine, nothing to tinker with in an ev,so most of the pleasure owning a car would be gone for me
When was the last time you "tinkered" with a brand-new Bentley? This isn't 1970 any more. You need a serious tool set just to get into a problem on a modern high-end car...Then a couple more serious tool sets, and a lot of care, and time just to do the actual work.
@@DetroitMicroSound this isn't a brand new Bentley, it's an old classic that's been converted to electric, if I could afford a classic Bentley from this era I would most certainly want to tinker with the engine, as I would with any classic car I owned
I see where you come from. I'm into vintage 50cc two-stroke European pedal mopeds.
I totally agree!
I like what he said, you know this car will take to anywhere with confidence - without leaking oil.
It will be interesting to see what Iain Tyrrell and Harry Metcalf think of this idea.
Their silence speaks volumes.
Jeeves, the unsung hero
The future of automotive engineering meets classic fluidity and grace... Match made in heaven, I say...
This car is James May personified.
The classics and vintage are real beauties.....electrifying them is the most AMAZING !! way to preserve or even bump up their actual value
Bump what? 😂😂😂 you have no idea how classic car market works.
Such a beautiful car! You don’t come more elegant and gracious as this show stopper!
Oh dear. Removing the engine from a classic is like removing someone’s heart.
My favourite part of a car
@Richard Harrold this is true but I’d still rather have any of these over a battery.
That's a very good idea but some super rare cars especially performance-oriented ones should keep their original engine.
Why does the infotainment system look like a 90's Apple Macintosh Classic?
It's a strange design choice - jarring and a bit naff
I was thinking is that a Compaq DeskPro? but yes, that bit looks naff.
This is the future old beautiful classic cars ev engines
That wonky speedometer would drive my OCD insane especially for the cost of the car.
Might you be mixing the power reserve indicator, with the speedometer ?
BMW should be doing this with Rolls Royce
The PERFECT CONVERSION for such prestigious and beautiful vehicles!!!!
Not for me. Most of the experience in owning/driving a classic car is the engine character. It's fine on a Rolls, where you want smooth silent operation, but a Bentley is more of a stretch, and don't get me started on that abomination of an XK.
Come on Porsche, save the motoring world!
My thoughts exactly. So depressing that the majority of commenters here don’t see that. Let’s hope Porsche’s synthetic fuel comes through!
Wow this thing is fantastic! Vintage luxury cars make perfect EV conversions.
If I where a billionaire, I'd buy it in a second
This should have been James May's segment
Omg I want one but a Aston Martin DB5 ☺️
Legend says that it's still lighter than the original ☺️
Jokes aside. I really like it. There are a lot classic cars that would be real jewels if converted to electric, this one is one of those.
Stunning ❤️
