Welcome back to the Foxhole and BabyMetal's journey 🦊🤘🔥
I don't remember following your BM journey but I'm glad to see you already know about them and came back to hear their new collab song with living legend Tom Morello. Please come back and share with us the new songs from latest album The Other One, they're not so happy like this because it's a concept album showing another side of BM but you're gonna enjoy it either way.
We got another banger for Japanese festival or any festival around, they performed this recently at Summer Sonic, and later at The Babyklok Tour in the US starting in Houston, hopefully they will do the same at, Aftershock and Louder Than Life and get the crowd going nuts with this.
It's their first song released with this new BM reborn and formation.
We heard the premiere of this at Apocrypha - Another One exclusive show, it was a blast and really unexpected but everyone was having a blast and even started with a Kami Band solo after a while without it.
The song title is Metali!! (all caps), it's a fusion of two words, metal + matsuri (matsuri means festival) and you can hear it in the spoken section when one them (MomoMetal, the new official member since April) is doing the Kabuki moves style.
Just so you know "wasshoi" is another shout used in Japanese street festival when people are carrying the shrines, similar to sore and soya you can hear in Megitsune.
I can totally see why they pick Tom Morello on this, the groove, the catchiness, the super energetic jump and those typical 90's vibes at funk or alternative metal live concerts.
You're not the first one finding Indian vibes, I myself got Punjabi MC - Knight Rider vibes the moment I heard that intro, only thing here is with a traditional Japanese instrument called shamizen they used in Megitsune too.
Fun fact, KobaMetal, the producer, is aware of Bloddywood and he likes that band.
    Next suggestion:
    - METALIZM official MV, don't worry about being blocked with the new official songs and MV, so far no one is having any issue.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this and see you next time.🦊🤘🎸

Good reaction. Welcome again to the crazy universe of BabyMetal.
BabyMetal is an atypical heavy metal group, because they are idols. In Japan, idols are often paired with pop music (Jpop), and Babymetal was actually a subgroup of a larger idol group called Sakura Gakuin.
Sakura was made up of girls between 10 and 15 years old dedicated to Jpop. When SuMetal (the singer) started she was 12 years old and MoaMetal/YuiMetal (the backup singers) were only 10 years old. Sakura represented the Japanese high school and the girls were distributed in clubs (traditional Japanese extracurricular activities such as cooking, swimming, basketball, sewing, etc.).
One of the producers, a lover of heavy metal, saw that Su's singing could perfectly be used in metal and asked permission from the Mother House (Amuse) to create the heavy music club, proposing an experiment in fusion between metal and the pop. Nobody, as they themselves have confessed, had much hope for its outcome, but they gave it the green light and thus BabyMetal, Sakura Gakuin's heavy music club, was born.
The first songs were intended for girls between 10 and 15 years old, who were Sakura's target audience. However, their quality and the fusion between pop and metal attracted attention beyond this audience and they began to frequent their metal concerts... a shocking audience of children and metalheads.
And it worked, it worked so well that they began to support groups like Metallica, Red Hot, BMTH or Lady Gaga, I seem to remember, on their tours in Japan. And the Red Hot singer commented that he was impressed to realize that part of the public came to see them, not them.
And so the base of BabyMetal fans grew. Sakura was a group in which, upon turning 15, the members had to leave (to pursue their careers elsewhere) and the producer (KobaMetal) requested permission again to create BabyMetal as an independent group. Success was already beginning to become a reality in Asia, so they authorized it, although Moa and Yui (they were still 13 years old) would also continue to be part of other Sakura clubs (I don't know when the poor girls studied, but they did).
In 2014 a milestone would arrive in the group's history. They were already an established metal group in Asia that sold out concerts, but they had not yet made the leap to the West. In that year his song "Gimme Chocolate" rose to fame on UA-cam (currently 182M views) and attracted the attention of the producers of the Sonisphere festival. KobaMetal had doubts about taking the step, since their musical proposal (Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal, a genre of which they are considered creators) might not be accepted in the West and the metalheads who went to the Sonisphere had a reputation for saying goodbye to very bad manners to the artists they didn't like (even with bottles full of urine), but they were offered to go to one of the secondary stages (about 5000 spectators) and they ended up accepting.
But the success of BabyMetal on UA-cam and the fact that all the concerts they were going to give in Europe were sold out in a few days, convinced the producers to take them to the main stage, where they would share with groups like Metallica, for example.
How many girls (they were between 16 and 14 years old at that time) were "terrified" before going out, and they didn't know what scared them more: that they wouldn't understand their music and they would have to run away or that when they went out on stage it would be empty. .
But the story was very different, not only was it not empty, but more than 50,000 metalheads, an estimated 95% of whom had never heard of them, finished their fifth and last song chanting "another one, another one."
And that's how they achieved popularity in the West as well.
They currently have 4 albums on the market:
-Babymetal (2013): Their first album and the most childish of all, since they were between 15-13 years old when it came out and had energetic, positive music that left a smile on their faces. Headbangers is from this album.
-Metal Resistence (2016): an album that, without losing the essence of the first, shows more mature music, going from childhood to adolescence. Songs like Karate were a large part of his presentation in the West.
-Metal Galaxy (2018): a turning point in its style. Without abandoning their energy, they turned their attention to new forms of metal fusion (hip-hop, dance music, Hindu music or European folklore, among others), projecting a much more mature music in keeping with their age, which was already around 21 years old. of Su and the 18 of Moa (unfortunately Yui left the group due to health problems)
And now in 2023 they have just released their new album "The Other One", which is, again, totally different from what they have done until now (one of the hallmarks of BabyMetal is that their songs are usually very different some from others (although they are all positive adrenaline releases)
Currently BabyMetal is considered the most important Heavy Metal group in Japan (I'm not saying the best, that's for everyone to decide) and the most influential in history in the West (it has reached levels that no other Japanese heavy group has reached before). ).
The journey through the Babymetal galaxy may be long, but it is certainly entertaining and with a few songs it drags you with a smile into the fox hole.

It can be argued that BabyMetal don't have a specific sound as they have explored all sorts of genres around a metal theme or not metal at all. However, as others have said, Metali, is 'claasic BabyMeta;l' - a return to their first two albums.

It's more like a specific reference to Megitsune, Sore! Lol Well, they made it pretty obvious but METALI still sounds very different than the BABYMETAL "classics", I would say there's actually more Japanese instrumentation influence in METALI than Megitsune or all of their songs if I remember correctly.

  • @road-runner
    @road-runner Рік тому +22

Great reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL (at least on your channel).
Answering a few of your questions:
    - No, this is not a new direction... actually it's kinda the old direction... it's complicated. They are very diverse musically since they don't hesitate on mixing any music genre (EDM, hip-hop, pop, rock, folk, salsa, ska...) with any metal sub-genre. Their newer album, The Other ONE released earlier this year 2023, is probably their most cohesive and solid one (with less rarities, if you want).
    - No they are not the same members. Unfortunately Yui Mizuno left BABYMETAL officially in 2018 after not being able to perform due to undisclosed health issues since October 2017. They continued as a duo, trying several solutions during 2018 and ending that same year going back to the triangle formation. In 2019 they implemented a system called "the Avengers" formed by three dancers covering Yui's old spot on the choreo but without a singing role. They were: Riho Sayashi, Kano Fujihira and Momoko Okazaki. Then 2020 happened, went on hiatus in 2021, returned in October 2022 with the announce of a new album and resuming live performances in January 2023. Finally, Momoko Okazaki was announced as an official member on April 1st 2023, she's now MOMOMETAL. Other that that (it's still a sensitive topic), Suzuka Nakamoto (SU-METAL), the lead singer and Moa Kikuchi (MOAMETAL) are the same OG members.
About the song itself, "Metali" = "metal" + "matsuri" (traditional Japanese festival) is a "matsuri" influenced song. It's full of chants and calls and responses and it's all about hyping the crowd and inviting them to dance and sing along.
Musically it's very groovy and funky and I love Su-metal's clean yet aggressive vocals here. Really cool collaboration with Tom Morello, indeed! Morello commented this: "I am a big fan of BABYMETAL, a band that is both power rocking and constantly surprising with dizzying musical twists and turns. I've been trying to work with them for some time and when they sent me the demo of 'Metali!!' I knew I could rock that shit like crazy!".
And very happy for Momoko on her first song and music video as an official member and also for that kabuki (traditional Japanese theater) style interlude.
That's all for now, so... here is my usual recommendation: always expect the unexpected and prepare to be surprised. 😁
And a suggestion: "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (Live at Sonisphere 2014). Can't link it for some reason...
    Enjoy tour BABYMETAL journey!

Welcome back to Babymetal! Their recent concept album "The Other One" was more exploratory. This song is 100% rooted in Japanese festival traditions, similarity to Bloodywood is just a coincidence, as the instrument is traditional Japanese shamisen.

If you haven't seen the live moametal version of headbanger, I highly recommend! "Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi!“ Welcome (back?) and great reaction. The live performances of this have been completely wild and the crowds are going nuts! 🤘🤪🤘They are about half way through their latest US tour with Dethklok right now.
It looks like RoadRunner (and others) has answered most of or all your questions so I'll try to keep this short(ish).
Two of the original three are still there, they are lead vocalist Su-metal and her great friend Moametal. Sadly Yuimetal last performed in October 2017, taking her doctor's advice she missed a couple of huge shows celebrating Su's 20th birthday in December that year and was absent for the 2018 tour. She announced in October 2018 that she was still not fully recovered and was unable to perform so she had decided to leave the band.
Su and Moa continued as a duo for the next 4 or 5 years supported from 2019 by 3 dancers (the Avengers Riho, Kano and Momoko) who would take turns to dance in the third spot.
On 1st April this year the last remaining Avenger was finally revealed as the new third member of the reborn BABYMETAL - that was Momoko, now officially Momometal.
This is Momometal's first official music video since she was revealed as the official new member in April and she even got her own solo part with the spoken kabuki theatre section.
So is this a new direction for BABYMETAL? Every song they have ever done has been a new direction - they have no boundaries and refuse to be limited, pigeonholed or stuck in just one box with what they do. They have songs in virtually every metal sub-genre or style and then they will mix or blend in so many other musical styles and genres with the metal ... nearly 70 songs and you will have to search hard to find two alike.
More BABYMETAL reactions? Absolutely yes please - anything and everything (you already have some great suggestions in the comments).

The sound you've mentioned is Shamisen, a Japanese traditional instrument. Old instruments are sounded alike, but not the same.
The vibe is totally traditional Japanese festival, the Shamisen, the chanting, and the choreography move, mixed with metal music and Tom Morello's signature touches.

To answer your question they did lose a member, Yui Mizuno (Yui-Metal) back in 2018 for health reasons, they did several different combinations of other dancers for the next four years until this year as one of those stand-in dancers Momoko Okazaki (Momo-Metal) was officially made a member (she is the one doing the old lady voice in the middle of the video) and now with original members Su-Metal (Lead Singer, single top ponytail) and Moa-Metal (Shout-and-Dance, twin tails) they are a full trio again.

Welcome and thanks from Japan 有難う 💛。 BABYMETAL is coming to town ♪ : Phoenix on Oct. 10 at Arizona Financial Theater. They are going on North American tour with Dethklok (Total 30 gigs). This song is one of the setlist and keeps blasting the audience at every venue. The title is a synthesized word from two words : "Metal" and "Matsuri 祭 (festival)" → Metali. And if you want to know the deep meaning of the lyrics please check Professor Hartley's channel (Andrew Hartley).
BABYMETAL is the best musical phenomenon I have ever experienced in my 68-year-long life. (Before BM, I was a stubborn jazz / funk lover) We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

I can absolutely recommend watching more Babymetal, but be warned, the suction power of the Foxhole is even stronger than the tractor beam of an imperial star cruiser.
The song here (Metali) was published four weeks ago, when they were already well into this years world tour. Judging by fancam footage from recent concerts, it is an absolute beast live and already a fan favourite.
Another song that got much attention lately is Monochrome, from their last album The Other One. You can of course pick one of a number of live performances. I prefer the one from the Clear Night Concert, which is stunningly beautiful visually. Or you go for the stripped down acoustic version performed on the channel The First take. Less metal than the live version and lacking the choreo, but heartwrenchinly beautiful. Also, the concept of that channel is interesting: The artists can rehearse or soundcheck as long as they like, but once the camera rolls, that is the take for the channel. Mostly Japanese singers like ReoNa, but Avril Lavigne also dropped in.
My personal favourite from Babymetal is probably Kagerou. Very heavy musically, and the choreography oozes out girl power and confidence galore. I love the intro riff.

This isn't a new direction for BABYMETAL, this is BABYMETAL of long ago - this is kawaii metal! Evidently your experience of BABYMETAL is either limited or forgotten or both. I suggest you go back to the beginning and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"). I'm sure you will find both very entertaining. There is a playlist on UA-cam ("BABYMETAL Top Twenty") that includes those two music videos and the one you just reacted to, and it includes both music videos and live performances - consider it a road map to the BABYMETAL foxhole. Until you see their earlier work, you haven't really experienced BABYMETAL. If you continue to do as you did in this reaction video (pause occasionally and off-set the music a bit), I don't think you'll have much problem regarding being blocked. One other suggestion that might help with that: when you pause, back the video about five or ten seconds - not only might it help throw off the "YT police" but it also lets you regain the flow of the song.
No, this isn't the original trio: unfortunately, Yui left the band in 2018 for health reasons, and only earlier this year was Momometal named a member of the group.
Most of the music of their first three albums ("BABYMETAL", "Metal Resistance", and "Metal Galaxy") made listening to metal fun. BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music "kawaii metal" (cute metal), and there wasn't anything kawaii about their last album ("The Other One"). It wasn't a bad album but it didn't sound like BABYMETAL. This song is BABYMETAL getting their kawaii back! And I sincerely hope that they don't misplace it again!

It was made during the time we took a break from doing concerts after our ten-year METAL RESISTANCE saga, so the album is about “an alternate BABYMETAL.” At the same time, we’re sometimes called “Kawaii Metal” but don’t think that’s the only thing we’re about. We want to make new music, so we don’t want to be tied down by that image. We want to show another side like this and hope people will enjoy this, too. On top of that, BABYMETAL’s new main story will begin again, so please look forward to that as well.
A sane Reddit user - They don't want to be tied down by it. It does not mean the style of the other one will be their direction going forwards, instead they will do whatever they want. From all they've said it seems they had felt that there's a certain expectation for how babymetal should sound like and the other one's intention was to be kind of a reset to these expectations.
It doesn't mean kawaii metal is a thing of the past. It also doesn't mean they won't release more songs like this album. Like the lyrics of divine attack say, they're going their own way and they're asking the fans to join and see their future journey together.
Another sane reddit user - They don't want to be typecast/railroaded/handcuffed
Creative freedom matters. They also said in the same interview that it wasn't a guarantee they were coming back, I reckon THIS is how they chose to address that.
To be constantly the same thing, every time, would burn any artist out. Its why bands break up, do side projects, end up with drama, because centrally they are creative minds being suffocated by their own creations if they aren't allowed out of their box.
TOO and the hiatus are the best thing they could ever have done. They are elegant adults that can choose to be kawaii or choose to be dead serious in their music. That is freedom.
Freedom they may have desired for a long time, too, but were not able to explore because at the time they might not have been taken as seriously as they can be today. They were kids. They certainly aren't now.

Fair reaction. I absolutely love prog... as much for the absolutely insane musicianship as for the fact that it messes with people 😁. Thank you for reacting to this absolute masterclass in prog music. 🦊🤘🖤

Yes, you should do more BABYMETAL. My rec for the next oneis Ijime, Dame, Zettai from Sonisphere 2014. edit: never say that Moa is little. 😉 edit 2: saw this song performed live a few weeks ago and it was great.

If you do BabyMetal stop the video a couple times and talk the people you play the video start to finish without talking or stopping the video gets dinged.

Not my Favourite song to be honest, it's more the hype that it's Tom Morello , a guy that nobody's heard of since Rage Against the Machine like 20 years ago anyway.
