I was so happy to hear this park was created. This place will bring a lot of joy to a lot of people, locals and tourists alike.
I am retired now, but have been privileged to work on two geologic mapping projects in and around the gorge one lasted about two years and one took three. There was limited mining very near if not actually in the park boundaries in the 1970s. I collected coal samples in those mines. Oh, I also watched the bridge being built from the beginning to the dedication!

Born in West Virginia my grandfather had a photo album of black & white pictures of the construction of the bridge. He would periodically drive out there & snap pictures.

W. Virginia is a different kind of place. I drive all over the country and it feels like going back to 1970. It’s fun to see the first time but after that it’s just a pain in the ass.
