- By the latter half of the 19th century, European imperialism penetrated nearly every institution in the Muslim world. From their palaces and armies, to their schools and hospitals. This overwhelming European presence sought to dismantle the central role Islam played in shaping Muslim society. European empires, though Christian, were becoming increasingly fervent advocates of secularism; believing that religion should become absent from public life. Many Muslims vehemently rejected this. But with the West growing in power and influence, many Muslim thinkers and leaders began to adopt Western ideals in the hopes that maybe they could better instrumentalise their religion to an ever modernizing milieu. Other Muslim scholars, however, thought that these ‘reformist’ Muslims were straying away from their religion and becoming too close to the teachings and politics of the colonizers.

always been fascinating to me how "The West" once encompassed areas of Greece / Turkey that later for various people, do not encompass "The West". if "The West" is supposed to be the Straussian idea of "Athens + Jerusalem" then would "The East" be a. Like a lot of social conflicts, there doesn't have to be and there's no inherent reason why there should be, but people may make it happen regardless. But it should always be understood as a choice, which requires both sides to insist on it and drown on those who disagree, not an inevitability.
Political Islam spent most of its existence more tolerant, accepting, and flexible than most of the history of political Christianity. There's no inherent reason it can't take that mantle again.
Its more like west vs the false image of islam they created to make an enemy themselves and not the real islam.
Islam just like the west, pretty much protecting individual ownership,Islam let the rich become rich as long as zakat being paid and didnt break any rules Allah create in al-quran (no interest, no gambling, no alcohol, no cheating in trade,no free sex, no drugs,etc) .
The one created the false image of Islam that many still believe sadly as the real islam, didnt like the value of islam that prohibit many value I mentions before because it will disrupt their source of money.
If we care to seeking truth for a bit, all of that what islam prohibit is among the biggest money maker business in this world, like interest in banking, porn industries, gambling industries, drugs and alcohol bussiness.
Imagine if Islam in rule in this world, all of that bussineses will be pretty much abolished and straight up illegal practice.

The West posses technologic and scientific edge. Add to that Jewish mastership and Christian fire and fanatism of Templers/Crusaders. They are being revived anyway. Every great nation or empire throughout time takes what works well from previous empires or nations and then they use that foundation to build upon. Its the same with any form of science or philosophy you build upon the ideas that others either created or contributed to. thats what newton meant when he said "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants".

No. What polemics call "The West" is just modernity. Modernity breeds a lot of existential and religious crises, but it also creates opportunities. The struggle of modernity is to navigate the challenges so that you can have the best of both worlds. This is a personal struggle. It cannot be resolved through violent revolution or coercing an outdated way of life on individuals who want no part in it.
What modernity did was given everyone a choice. Many people aren't strong enough to choose right, but this choice isn't the enemy. Rather, it is yourself, and this is true of all humanity.

As a non-Muslim who doesn't know much about Islam or Islamic history, thank you for making this content accessible. I especially enjoyed learning about how both Khan and al-Afghani placed such importance on both logic and education. That's an admirable point of view, and I think both Muslims and the West would benefit from learning more about each other.
The West would learn how to shut it out protect itself against Islam. That will be their gain from learning about Islam. Nit from Muslims because they will lie (taqqiya), but fom ex-Muslims who speak Arabic.

Here's a thing about education: It required money. And the higher the education, the more expensive it is. No Muslim rulers at the times have ever thought about matters regarding the economies at all. They never realized that the Silk Road had been in decline until it was too late. And while some Muslim states have the some ambitions left in them, they failed to implement them and sadly, they only had one shot at such an opportunity.
So what can the Muslim nations like the Ottoman Empire or the Khedivate of Egypt do to restore their economies without taking loans from the European nations? Well, colonizing New Holland, which was the name of Western Australia at the time, will be the good option. Back then, the British were only colonizing Eastern Australia so far and while the western parts have already been explored, they only discovered iron ores so far and no colonization happened yet because the British government saw no profits can be made from mining iron ores. So that could be the chance the Ottoman Empire and the Khedivate of Egypt were looking for. By mining those iron ores and discovering other resources such as salt, gold, mangese and pearls in New Holland, the Sublime Porte and the Khedive's government can actually sponsored their own education and modernizing without taking loans from the European nations.

Excellent, excellent video. The lost chance at an Islamic "reformation" is such a tragedy. If there's one thing that could move the Islamic world on it would be the acceptance that religious belief is a purely personal matter, and matters of state etc should be based on empirical data as much as possible. Look at the state Turkey's gotten itself into based on the beliefs of the crypto-Islamist Erdogan, crazy stuff.

while Taliban who are strict Deobandis had defeated the US and NATO and freed their country Afghanistan from invaders while growing their currency value above the both Indian and Pakistani currency value and slowly moving towards development.
Lebanon was on the verge of Israeli occupation and Hezbollah saved it while being a newly formed organization and still protecting Lebanon militarily, providing services of Education, Health and others,
But what had Turkiye Achieved by applying Kemalism instead of being in the lap of NATO and shamelessly asking for the joining of EU,
All the mentioned countries above are growing in strength, wealth and prosperity without EU and while some are even in sanctions.
Kemal just made Turkiye survived from being occupied and divided while his ideology totally made the Turkish nation a slave to the WEST, you are still hanging upon the one achievement of the past instead of seeing that this ideology is getting Turkiye struck at the bottom.

The British for the first time (in roughly 600 yrs.) liberated India (especially it's Hindu majority) from Islamic overlords and gave both Hindus and Muslims the opportunity of secular and scientific education as opposed to religious education.
However, the reaction towards secular education was very different. The Hindus (mostly Hindu upper caste) embraced secular education after some resistance whereas Muslims mostly rejected secular education and even most Muslim upper-class families preferred to send their children to Madrassa instead.
