Fuel Pump Relay TESTING and REPLACEMENT

- How to test and replace a fuel pump relay. The principles shown here apply to most vehicles. However, it's best to check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters. This specific vehicle is a '97 Nissan Maxima.
The fuel pump relay is an electronic component found on all vehicles with an internal combustion engine. It directs current to the electric fuel pump and ensures that the part receives enough power to operate properly, but not too much as to damage it. Whenever you turn on the ignition of your vehicle, the fuel pump relay is turned on. The fuel pump relay is usually controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or the ignition.

Great Video and explanation, easy and thorough style to follow and learn. Thanks!
Worked to check my snowmobile relays! Thank you!
Best tutorial of relay testing...period.
Great explanation and detailed and obviously it’s not for my car but you did mention that all you would have to do is punch in your vehicle information and the fuel pump relay so it really doesn’t matter what car you just have to punch in your information
Thank you, that was simple and explained well, I'll go check mine now
Glad to help.
nice job i came here to find out where mine is on my 2012 nissan ,,,thank you well done job just like in school back in time . thanks
Excellent video, very clear. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful!
Best Ever Explanation of relay test, cudo's to you My Friend
Excellent! Very helpful to understand with the demonstration. Thanks. Will use a 12V power adaptor and try to test
Glad it helped
@@CarsNToys I tested them successfully on my Datsun Redigo here in India and it helped me diagnose the problem.
The power was going go the fuel pump motor but it was not working. Took it off connected it to my 12v adaptor and tried to manually rotate its fan and it started working.
Here video of it.

Thanks once again.
Thank you much for showing us how to us ho to read information on the relay, how to use a multeter to test this relay and any other relay, as well as how to detect a bad relay.
I really enjoyed your video. If you would do a series on how to test other electrical car parts using a multimeter I think it would be very helpful for all of us novices in UA-cam Land.
I love your teaching style.
Will you do a video blike this on how to test a Mass Air Flow Sensor ?
I really appreciate this man!

Thank you so much. Very helpful video. It makes it so simple to locate, understand and test a fuel relay. Going to try it on my Fiat Panda (1988) before I try to take out the pump which is so difficult to access and remove. I add you to my subscriptions.
Thank You!

2000 Nissan Maxima.
Nice, thank senor,big help
Veey good information, thank you 👍
cool man i learned something from these 5 minutes, thanks. But i would love to see the reading on screen :)
how much resistance should you see passing through to consider good once the meter is hooked up? my relay clicks, but once I meter it also I get anywhere from 0.0ohms to .5ohms
Better yet to measure the actual resistance of the relay, most multimeters beep for continuity testing at a couple of Ohms, but even a couple of Ohms relay contact resistance will drop enough voltage to make whatever is behind that act up.
Fue exelente gracias por hacer este video
Nice vid. Had this fail on a 1998 Integra, what a pain in the @$$ it was to determine as it was just stalling driving down the highway, but just put the clutch in, crank it and it would start back up no problem. Eventually, after many a stall and a few Google searches, I came a cross a forum that suggested the fuel pump relay. Replaced it and no more stalling.
+Amaury Lopez That's awesome man. Yea, it's one of those things people often over look.
Amaury Lopez. tego problema co honda integra me. coje los cabio mi tarde
just as you said go on google i was doing it and still had your vid playing so so i heard you say lol
Thank you sir.
Welcome.

Thanks for the clear video. Can you name that power source that you used here. I was looking on amazon and couldn't find it. Thanks in advance and I have subbed !
Thank you!!!!
Thanks for sharing idol...☺ full support
I followed your link on how to test a 5 prong relay and it brought me to another 4 prong test. Great video but I need to test a 5 prong. Do you have an actual vid for that? if so where? MAny thanks
I like this showing.
Informative vid. If it's defectuve, Any idea what code it gives when using an obd2 reader?
Car had been starting normal without issue. Yesterday, same thing then I get on the road and it sputtered once for a split second before going back to normal. Got a few miles down the road and it started to do the same thing but more intense, like hesitation before completely dying. 94 Corolla 1.6L
Before you jack up your town car turn off the air bags switch on the driver side in the trunk.
nice covering up the readout when you make the connection...next!!!
Temp fix.. If your cars interior is hot from the summer heat it can definitely effect the relay, especially if your car is old. If your car doesn't start, air your car out first and try it. It just worked for me. You can avoid car heat, by parking under a shady tree and crack the windows.
Thanx
Hi, I like the ending music, did you create yourself or is it someone else’s production?
Excellent tutorial. But can the relay give an intermittent problem? Thanks.
Thanks for the tip, I hope it works for me
Glad to help.
Be way nicer if he put the type and year of the car or truck..good way to test the relays. But description of what he is working on will be the key.
Hi have a 30l td 2001 Nissan patrol just had a full engine strip and rebuild including brand new turbo and turbo intercooler an it still isn't boosting right any advice would be great thanks
I wonder if I could hook up my trickle charger to the relay
exellent

Mine was a bad relay not sending the right amount of current to thepump causing it to run weak and it couldn’t build up the right pressure. New relay now pump gets its full power
wow Nice
Good morning have got problem on locating PCM relay for ford Transit dura torque diesel
can I use any 4point relay. or specific part number relay.
Good video tight but what kind of car your working on that would really help if I knew what kind of car is this ????
ok so what does 3 and 5 lead to
and which goes to the fuel pump positive is it 3 or 5
I've got a 92 olds 88 royale it runs while sitting in park.but stalls when I try to drive it. What would cause that.
it would be nice to know the make model and year of this vehicle in this video.
wdbne00 2000 Nissan Maxima
The whole point of the video is how to test a fuel pump relay. These work the same regardless of vehicle.
read description
or, you can jump around the relay. If the pump kicks on the relay is bad
If you connect power to numbers 1 and 2 on the harness side, will the fuel pump activate?
I have a 94 ford ranger with 2.3 I am not getting power to fuel pump I checked fuses under hood even the fuel shut off under dash an carper any thoughts please
Connecting current through 1 and 2 to get connectivity between 3 an 5, does that mean the current runs through 3 and 5 when installed? Is the relay in effect facilitating two seperate circuits that don't connect?
Where the hoses go on a relay for 2004 Nissan frontier frontier
Good job hi
Any answers on a 2003 Dodge Ram hesitates when cold on reverse or turning Corners runs great when it's warmed up I don't know if it's the fuel pump or sending you I have no idea I just would like some answers I can't find the right video
Good jop
It would be nice if he stated the year an make of car he is working on
It's stupid not to put it in the title or description, but when he's typing into google he searches for "2000 NIssan Maxima", so I'll guess that's what he's working on.
I typed in 2000 Audi A6 2.7t
Who cares what vehicle he's working on? It's the same idea for any vehicle.
Ha!2000 Nissan
David Muir Idiots. Pure idiots.
Are all relays standard? each make and model car is different?
What size/gauge jumper wire is used safely if using 12v car battery
Just get the original relay of the car somehow. It solved my problem.
Where the houses go on top of the air-conditioning unit for 2004 Nissan Front tier on top of the air conditioning unit
Can I open this up and clean the contacts or bend the spring and get it working again? I've done this with a signal light blinker 10 years ago and it still works.
You probably could but these relays tend to be inexpensive. You may save time just by replacing the faulty relay. Good luck!
I kept having random stalling when driving once it happened on the highway and that was little scary. I figured out it was my fuel pump relay seeing that my issue was very random car would always start okay but the engine would stall out why’ll driving and it alway took a bit too get it going again. I figured out my relay was bad it would cut the power to the fuel pump shutting it off and stalling the engine of fuel. Replaced it with a new relay so far so good. It’s odd that that relay and non of the rest are bad but I guess the fuel pump relay gets used a lot like every time you drive the car.
Interesting. Thank you for the feedback.

Quick question if anyone can answer.
I’m getting resistance and ohms when there is no power to the relay and when I put power to it I’m not getting any ohms does this determine if the relay is bad?
I what if. I don’t have numbers or diagrams on the relay? Like h300 relay, I see coil coil or no on some of the relays.. this is for a 89 ford probe gt
Helo, sometime there are relays with five prongs, what's the fifth one for?
relays with five pins, the fifth one goes to another thing that would be powerer, when the relay is powered the pins 3 and 4 are connected but when the relay is switched off the solenoid in the relay powers down and there is no longer a connection between 3 and 4 but now between 3 and 5, its used for things like headlights, when on dipped beam the power comes from pin 4 but when on full beam the power comes from pin 5, all controlled by the switch in the car...relays with 3 pins use one of the pins as a shared earth and the other two for the circuit
It's called continuity
Does this work for mustang
Put the vehicle make/model/year in your title!
Well what kind of car are you working on.
