His process is similar to my own and the reasoning behind it is it allows you to get through the majority of the haircut in a quick amount of time. It kind of traps the fade and allows you to look at the fade as a whole and detail areas that need it instead of going guideline by guideline. It definitely saves time as long as you know how high up to go with each step.
